From her beginnings in suburban Perth as a self taught guitarist at the age of 15 to her 1998 WA tour as a 19 yr old with a just-starting-out John Butler to a trans-continental crossing to set up camp in Sydney in her early 20’s, singer songwriter Tracy Redhead has covered some ground.

Her new album is a testament to that and sticking to your craft while knowing that you have to walk a bit before you can run – that is, life’s experiences make for great songs.

A labour of love that almost turned into a full time hobby, her new album ‘Walking Home A Different Way’ was written, refined, and recorded over a period of about 2 years with acclaimed drummer and producer, Tim Powles of The Church. Tracy played as many of the instruments as she possibly could, did the majority of lead and rhythm guitar parts. Her new band was predominantly formed before these recordings, but now features electronic producer Sofie Loizou on synthesizers.

Tracy says: Working with Tim gave me the biggest learning curve ever as a musician / songwriter. He really waited until the moment was right to record and managed to always find the magical take or part.... We both experimented, layering the album with melodies and interesting sounds, we tried to make a piece of art at the same time. He is such a creative and supportive producer that makes sure you can create an album that you can be proud of.

With the recent release of her debut solo album, Tracy has been happily cementing herself as a definite name on the local musical map with guest turns on recent albums from The Green Mist and The Chapel Of Ease where she played bass, sang lead vocal and co-wrote a portion of the albums tracks collaborating with local musicians Charlie Owen and Julien Poulson.

Tracy says: The Chapel of Ease is a really raw emotive recording and as freshly created as it gets. We all worked really hard. With The Green Mist, it was much more ‘rock and roll’ working with Lindsay Gravina at Birdland studios. Also, with The Green Mist, I couldn't believe I was collaborating with Brian from the Violent Femmes! They were one of my favourite bands growing up. I felt really privileged to be part of this recording and again it was really spontaneous.

‘Walking Home A Different Way’ displays songs heavily layered with lush melodies to others with a near Zeppelin-esque wail. The Album has received rave reviews including 4 stars in the Metro, Sydney Morning Herald.

The first single “Where it Fits” is currently play listed on Triple J, FBI, 3RRR and RTR Fm with the film clip being played on Rage. The single has received awesome exposure via the Triple J website having recently been offered as a 'new artist' mp3 seeing 6000+ downloads!

‘Walking Home A Different Way’ is released by new Sydney label Perfect Sun, which is a recent venture for UK ex-pat Richard Roberts who signed PJ Harvey and Stereolab in his time as founder and owner of legendary London label Too Pure. Distribution is nationally via Inertia.

Where it Fits

Written By: Tracy Redhead

Where does it fit
This day amongst the others
Cause I’m finding it so hard
Even though my pain is nothing compared to other

I’m not to sure why
Im finding it so hard
To start today

Where does it fit
This day amongst the others
Probably would not exist
In some cultures
Where there’s no word for love
And no time for indulgence

I’m not to sure why
Im finding it so hard
To start my days

I’m not to sure why
Im finding it so hard
To start today

Your hearts in little pieces
And they start to be misplaced
But if you start loosing little pieces
Of your heart
They wont be replaced
You’ll find them in the strangest place

So I keep glueing them together
But it’s a temporary measure
Cause I keep looking for that time and place
Where they just fit together

Im not to sure why
Im finding it so hard
To start my day

Im not to sure why
Im finding it so hard
To start to today

Im not to sure why
Im finding it so hard
To find my way

Im not to sure why
Im finding it so hard
To leave or stay

Troubled little tune

Written By: Tracy Redhead

Her head went round got stuck inside, it ate her whole
All her friends could hear was a broken record stuck on the same song

I know that song it’s a troubled little tune
But all your distractions, their just the wind blowing in different directions
I know its hard but we wont be apart were severed together

I could be wrong but there’s always another familiar song
She heard the silence the beauty of simplicity
Or did she just grow up and forget /that/ she’s still singing the same song

I know that song, it’s a longing little tune
But all your distractions, their just the wind blowing in different directions
I know its hard but we wont be apart were severed together

Wind me up
Turn me around
I’ll play you a song
A beautiful sound
Then you can follow
Follow the sun
And around you go
Just follow the sun to another part of the world

I know you’re unsure
I need more

I know that song it’s a troubled little tune
I’ll be finding it hard but we wont be apart were severed together
Where those distractions, are just the wind blowing in different directions

I know that song it’s a lonesome little song
I know a song it’s a troubled little tune

Is This your world

Written By: Tracy Redhead

Sure you could sit this life out
pulling your hair out strand by strand
its a fear that holds your insides
that stealing other peoples lifes
Its not fair

Fine is this your world
Cause I cant seem to find anyone who finds it fun

Its a worry of what its all about
ignore it regret it make it go away
do what you need to justify for you theres no way back again

its not fair

Fine is this your world
Cause I cant seem to find anyone that finds you fun

Lost in your subconsious theres a thought that could maybe save
come on come on find a concept to aspire to lost in the system that consumes you

Is this your world

Afternooning

Written By: Tracy Redhead

Airade noise fears the air that you breath
the sound of war the sound of men
sound of a babies cry
would you stay?
could you stay?

Food is scarse waters rare your baby cries
and you walk for days in the harsh harsh sun to save your lives

loosing in this life loosing in this life

Travel to a land of peace
accross the ocean on a cargo ship
in the hope of a life of freedom
instead only jail lies ahead
four long years in the desert sun
your baby is now five only knows a life behind barbed wire

Losing in this life

That Day

Written By: Tracy Redhead

That day
It was clear
When she walked home a different way

Below
The bridge
She always watched from her window

Is she moving too fast
Has she really moved on from the past

She sees
only for today
a dream away
cause that day
She had to change her ways

The bridge
staged there love
they walked out of time with the trains above

She’s numb
Her worlds bright through /with a window of sun
Is she moving too fast
as she crumbles and breaks down at last

She sees
only for today
a dream away
cause that day
She had to change her ways

She’s numb
as her silhouette melds into one

Review

"No Tracy, you're not fooling me - that's not an official review me post it note. But since your polite enough to ask, and you have been brave enough to wear a tu tu into the townie in the early hours of the morning (no, really…) you deserve some recognition. And what comes out is beautifully rich pop music that builds on Ms Redheads voice, that skips and dances melodically to begin with before reaching inside itself and surging over you with an almost surprising power. With a full band that cradles rather than overwhelming her, and full string arrangements and all, this has depth beyond most indie stuff of the same status. Awfully Good." Ross Clelland, Drum Media

"Tracy Redhead seems to be one of the little heroes of the Sydney acoustic scene. A new style folk artist fronting an ensemble of drums bass, guitar and violin." - The Single Guy, The Brag
