Trapazoid is a quirky producer who outputs music which may be best described as a "funky swamp fusion". Both the digital and analogue realms are used to create a true post modern trip hop sound. Acoustic instruments happily swim on the surface oblivious to the layered electro undertoe.

Trapazoid is the heart & soul of sydney based musician Matt Trapnell

Date of birth 22 03 62

Current style : post modern trip hop blues

01 IT’S HARD TO REMEMBER EXACTLY WHEN I STARTED REALLY LIKING MUSIC.
I DEFINITELY KNOW THAT AROUND MY TEENAGE YEARS I WAS LISTENING
TO HEAPS OF WICKED MUSIC FROM PEOPLE LIKE SLY & THE FAMILY STONE,
JJ CALE, PATTI SMITH, TIM BUCKLEY, THE DOOBIE BROTHERS & BOB DYLAN.

02 AT SOME POINT I WAS INTRODUCED TO SOME BLUES AND ROOTS MUSIC
WHICH HIT ME LIKE A HAMMER. I CLIMBED RIGHT INSIDE AND DIDN’T COME
OUT FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS – SOME OF MY HEROS WHERE SONNY &
BROWNIE, HOWLING WOLF, SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON AND ONE OF THE YOUNGER
BLUES PLAYERS AT THE TIME - TAJ MAHAL.

03 THIS LED ME TO HAVING A GO AT PLAYING THE BLUES HARMONICA. I DO
REMEMBER STILL BEING AT SCHOOL BECAUSE I WAS PUTTING MORE TIME
AND EFFORT INTO MY HARP LICKS THAN I WAS MY MATHS ASSIGNMENTS.

04 WHEN I LEFT SCHOOL I STARTED GETTING A DISTINCT LIKING FOR GUITAR BASED
BANDS AND PLAYERS SUCH AS STEELY DAN, JIMMY HENDRIX, ERIC CLAPTON,
THE ALLMAN BROTHERS AND THE EARLY GEORGE BENSON STUFF (I BELIEVE WE
SHARE THE SAME BIRTH DATE – I HOPE SOMETHING RUBS OFF!) SO NOW I HAD
TO TRY MY HAND AT PLAYING THE “GIT” AND SOME 20 YEARS LATER I’M STILL
LEARNING.

05 THERE WASN’T MUCH MUSIC THAT I WASN’T LISTENING TO OVER THE NEXT
DECADE – THE LOCAL SCENE WAS PUMPING WITH THE MENTALS, MIDNIGHT OIL
AND THE ANGELS. AT THIS STAGE I WAS IN A LOCAL PARTY BAND CALLED
“THE SWINGING TEE’S” PLAYING HARMONICA AND MAKING THE OZARK MOUNTAIN
DAREDEVILS SONG “CHICKEN TRAIN” SOMEWHAT OF A TRADEMARK.

06 MY TASTE IN MUSIC GREW WITH A GOOD SERVING, THANKS TO A FRIEND WHOS
DAD HAD A HUGE RECORD COLLECTION, OF JAZZ, FUNK & FUSSION. I ENJOYED
GETTING MY EARS BENT BY MILES DAVIS AND JOHN COLTRANE AND LEARNT
WHAT JAMMING REALLY CAN BE THANKS TO JIMMY SMITH.

07 THE WHOLE MUSIC SCENE, FOR ME ANYWAY, GOT A BIT STALE IN THE 80’S SO I
WAS MORE THAN PLEASED TO BE TURNED ONTO THE NEW SOUNDS COMING FROM
EUROPE AND THE STATES. IT WAS THE ACID JAZZ MOVEMENT AND IT WAS ALL
THE MUSIC I LOVED COOKING AWAY IN ONE BIG BLUESY, FUNKY, JAZZY MELTING
POT. I WAS INTO THE NIGHTTRAINS, EXODUS QUARTET AND MOTHER EARTH.

08 SINCE THEN I HAVE JUMPED RIGHT INTO THE DEEP END OF THE DIGITAL POOL
AND I CAN TELL YOU I DON’T MIND DROWNING. I MIX TRADITIONAL
INSTRUMENTS WITH ELECTRONIC MUSIC AND TEND TO LEAN ON THE BLUE SIDE.
THE TECHNOLOGY HAS HELPED MY EARS TO EVOLVE AND MY MIND TO BROADEN.

09 GENERALLY I DON’T SAMPLE OTHER PEOPLES RIFFS OR MELODIES – I PREFER THE
CHALLENGE MYSELF BUT I AM A SUCKER FOR A GOOD CHANT, A WELL TOLD
STORY OR WEIRD WALLPAPER SOUNDS. ONCE YOU START SAMPLING YOU JUST
CAN’T STOP - YOUR IMAGINATION WON’T LET YOU.

Wisdom

Written By: Matt Trapnell

WISDOM – Matt Trapnell

SOMETIMES MY HEAD WON’T
FIT THROUGH THE DOOR
BUT I DON’T WANT THAT
I DON’T NEED IT ANYMORE
YOU’D HEAR ME MOANING
ABOUT THE UNIMPORTANT THINGS
WHY DID I DO WHAT I DID DIDN’T I LEARN ANYTHING

BUT NOW I’VE GOT SOME WISDOM
I’LL TELL YOU WHAT I KNOW
YOU’VE GOT TO TREAD MUCH LIGHTER
LIGHTER WHEN YOU GO

GO ON LOOK AROUND YOU
TELL ME WHAT DO YOU SEE
THERE’S NO SOLAR SYSTEM
GRAVITATING AROUND ME
MY HEAD MIGHT BE IN SPACE
BUT MY FEET ARE IN THE DIRT
AND I’M RELEIVED 'CAUSE I DON’T BELEIVE
I’M THE CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE

BUT NOW I’VE GOT SOME WISDOM
I’LL TELL YOU WHAT I KNOW
YOU’VE GOT TO TREAD MUCH LIGHTER
LIGHTER WHEN YOU GO

YOU MIGHT BE RELIGIOUS
GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES AND PRAY
BUT THERE’S A HEAP OF OTHER PEOPLE
THAT WENT THE OTHER WAY
YOU DON’T NEED A RECIPE OR A BOOK OF RULES
JUST RESPECT AND DON’T NEGLECT
THE LOVE INSIDE OF YOU

BUT NOW I’VE GOT SOME WISDOM
I’LL TELL YOU WHAT I KNOW
YOU’VE GOT TO TREAD MUCH LIGHTER
LIGHTER WHEN YOU GO

My Lady

Corn Field Fiddler

Written By: Matt Trapnell

Corn field fiddler – matt trapnell

Crazy eyes on a dusty road
a stranger walks on by
Skin like vinyl and blood like glue
With a partly pickled mind

He’s a denim dancer
a harnessed hound
A fish hook in a pie
He’s a black sheep
with twisted feet
He’s too eternal to die

In the sunken sky there’s a milky moon
With a grey cloud for a beard
And so our shadow walks with sneaky steps
That no ones ever heard
He’s closing in like a tightening ring
Around the middle of your lungs
The mystery man with the hard hands
The dead bastard’s son

He’s A hapless hobo with mattered hair
A Sticky shirt and a cross to bear
Stray dog side kick – skinny as a pole
Scrapping on down the side of the road
A Missing tooth and a greasy comb
He’s a Bootle boozer from a broken home
On A crooked walk over many miles
This wondering soul and his travelling child

He’s a cornfield fiddler
A barnyard owl
A haystack preacher
He’s A hen pecked foul
A walking scarecrow
With a barbed wire grin
He’s A free range floater
With tobacco skin
