On A Little Too Late, Travis Green offers 10 original songs backed by an all-star group of musicians including Kid Anderson (guitar and producer), Randy Bermudes(bass) Jason Hansen (drums), Jim Pugh (keyboards), Nancy Wright (sax), and Lisa Leuschner Andersen and Courtney Knott (backup vocals) The songs are an interesting blend of blues, country and rockabilly, making this a real winner for fans of roots music. Things get off to a rocking start with "A Little Too Late" Green's vocal here reminds me of Hank Williams on classics like "Jambalaya" Most of the the songs here are about love gone wrong and "Please Don't Cry" encapsulates that theme. This one is country, lightly tinged with blues. "Everybody Knows" is a blues-rocker, that bluntly states what Green thinks about the woman it's about::Everybody know that you're a bitch at heart. The sassy strutting arrangement benefits greatly from Nancy Wright's sax. The next song "The Only Love" would have sounded right at home on early 60's radio. It's a rockabilly ballad. "Keep You Off My Mind" is rockabilly also, with a very dance-able beat. For "Damage Done" the musical mood turns more serious as Green delivers a blues tune about asking for forgiveness. But that is followed up by a straight-out rockabilly rave-up with "Caroline" pronounced Caro-leen, which features Wright's amazing sax and Green's rocking vocal for my favorite song on the CD. "Road Runs Cold" returns to country blues for some good old Southern storytelling and "salt and Sand" continues in that vein. Green's voice reflects just the right plaintive quality for this type of song. "Don't Forget" brings the album to an end with a blues-tinged country ballad about moving on but remembering lessons learned. Green has the sort of voice meant for roots music, and he is an entertaining songwriter. Here he is surrounded by excellent musicians and expertly produced by Andersen.
