"Woody Guthrie Folk Festival"

Dirty Linen - Woody Guthrie Folk Fest
"... Another new discovery was the music of Travis Kidd.
Making his third Woody Fest appearance, Kidd performed
an exciting acoustic set of original material. His songs
are rooted in folk, rock, and country, and his comfortable,
easygoing stage presence made a quick and lasting
connection with the audience. In addition, Kidd seems to
have attained the difficult lyrical balance of being
subtly intricate while delivering a straight-forward message..." -A.C.E.

"Festivus for All of Us"

BY JENNIFER PIGEON

"There's nothing like an Oklahoma sunset." So says local recording artist Travis Kidd who just recently finished up final touches on a song dedicated to the bright, beautiful Oklahoma skies.

Kidd's song appropriately titled "Oklahoma Sunset" will make its debut on the banks of the Arkansas River during a once-in-a-lifetime celebration set to honor Oklahoma's first 100 years as a state.

Oklahoma Centennial celebrations are set to kick off this month and stretch out over the course of the entire next year leading up to the state's 100th birthday on Nov. 16, 2007.

The festival also features local musicians such as Kidd who perform in the local music scene and appreciate their roots in a state with such a deep history with rich traditions.

Kidd said he was inspired to write the song "Oklahoma Sunset" ten years ago while out of state trying to branch out into the national country scene in Nashville, Tenn.

"I was driving with a friend of mine, Clint Ingersoll, who has since gone on to be a national recording artist, when he looked out the window and said, 'You know, Travis, there's just nothing like an Oklahoma sunset'...that stuck with me for ten years!" Kidd said.

Kidd described how he has been to many places in his life and how he thinks the scenes from Oklahoma are among the most beautiful in the world.

"The song came to me at a hard time in my life when I was going through some tough things and was eventually able to overcome them. The idea coincides with the ups and downs the state has faced and overcame in its first 100 years- like the Oklahoma City bombing to the Depression and back to the recent thriving of the economy," Kidd explained.

This notion of perseverance is a strong idea built into not only countless Oklahoma companies but also Oklahoma citizens. The Riverfest and Bestfest celebrations are new ideas for a party with old themes- Oklahoma as a state full of diversity and rich traditions populated by people of value and awesome talent.

"Singer/songwriter Travis Kidd celebrates Oklahoma with a song of hopefulness"

By MATT GLEASON World Scene Writer

Travis Kidd stood on his front porch soaking in the last rays of a summer sun as its deep orange glow washed over the rural Bixby landscape and colored the skies above in a purple hue with just a touch of gray.

That cinematic sunset inspired Kidd’s song “Oklahoma Sunset,” which he will perform around 5:30 p.m. Saturday at The Great State of Oklahoma Extravaganza Fireworks and Laser Light Show, then at 2 p.m. Sunday at Best Fest, and again at the Centennial launch party at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Kidd had, of course, seen many a sunset before, but that sunset in particular recalled one he’d seen 10 years before in Nashville.

The local artist and a fellow Okie songwriter who’d also moved to Nashville to make a name for himself, were cruising around town when they both saw the sun dipping under the horizon.

Kidd’s pal said to him, “Hey Travis, check it out. It looks like one of the sunsets from back home.”

Kidd recalled marveling at the sight and agreed there’s something special about sunsets back home where his family has lived for generations.

So there was Kidd, standing on his porch witnessing this awe-inspiring sunset this past summer, and feeling the need to channel his thoughts into music.

Fifteen minutes or so later, Kidd had finished “Oklahoma Sunset,” a tune off his next release that’s a mix of Southern rock and Kenny Chesney style country.

The song finds its hero looking toward the setting sun and feeling the goodness in life, feeling that love comes easy even in hard times when the rain won’t come, the baby’s crying and the winds blow hot over dying crops.

Its message of hope for a new day seemed ideal for the Oklahoma Centennial celebration, Kidd said.

“An Oklahoma sunset is just a day away, you know? Just a way to start over and focus on the good things, and a promise of a better tomorrow, which is pretty cheesy, but it’s kind of what it’s about. All troubles aside, life ain’t that bad.”

Once Kidd submitted the song, it ultimately found its way to Tulsa Coordinator of the Oklahoma Centennial Paula Hale, who thought it was a perfect song for the celebration.

“I liked the song first because of the single guitar music — so grassroots,” Hale wrote in an e-mail. “And then I liked the upbeat spirit of the lyrics. It seemed to capture that things might not be perfect, but joy can be found in a beautiful Oklahoma sunset.”
