Trendy Outfit es el nombre adoptado por los miembros de la banda Papa Negro, Claudio Mas (Guayi) y Carlos Valenzuela para dar inicio a un proyecto en paralelo que surge por un accidente creativo.
Mientras estaban en pleno proceso de creación del quinto álbum de la banda funk, afloraron nuevos sonidos que no eran del todo representativos a la linea que lleva esta banda nacional, por lo que toman la decisión de crear Trendy Outfit.
Guayi y Carlihnos se ponen como misión crear un EP de 5 canciones llamado Anima de la mano de un cortometraje que une a cada una de ellas al más puro estilo de Interstella 5555 de Daft Punk.
El duo tiene un sonido muy marcado e influenciado por el trabajo de artistas internacionales como Jamie Lidell, Mayer Hawtorne, Jazzanova entre otros y donde Trendy Outfit viene a ser una de las propuestas más frescas que tiene la música chilena este año, presentando algo no muy explorado en la actual escena nacional.
Anima de Trendy Outfit busca la exploración de sonidos sintéticos, con el frescor y elegancia que representa a los dos miembros y sus más de 16 años en la música funk, acompañados de la evolución del sonido, la experimentación y desarrollo de nuevas técnicas que ellos no hablan tenido la posibilidad de mostrar. Guayi cantando en ingles con líricas mucho más oscuras y melancólicas de las que estábamos acostumbrados a oír, acompañadas de una mezcla de teclados, maquinas y sintetizadores armonizados por Carlos Valenzuela y este funk-fusión experimental particular del proyecto.
Estas 5 canciones son una pequeña pasada de algo que PapaNegro estuvo tratando de evitar durante mucho tiempo y que es la evolución natural que ha tenido la música con influencias negras, sin embargo por mantener una linea más clásica solo podemos escuchar pequeñas instancias de esa influencia en la música de que hoy esperamos poder encontrarlas en un futuro bajo el ala de Trendy Outfit.
Para quienes son gozadores de la música técnica, de los sonidos frescos (ideales para esta época de primavera) y la experimentación de la música negra, Trendy Outfit es una interesante propuesta que puede llamar tu atención, una de las referencias más grades a su sonido es el ingles Jamie Lidell, uno de los músicos que más admira Carlos y Guayi y que hoy tienen la oportunidad de buscar un sonido similar en Anima el primero de lo que esperamos sea un proyecto que aporte nueva música a la escena chilena. - 192.cl
Estos últimos días he escuchado muchísima musical nacional, principalmente me llamo la atención los proyectos paralelos que algunas bandas chilenas ya consolidadas tienen y que probablemente tú aún no has escuchado.
“Trendy Outfit” es uno de ellos, por eso que me llamo la atención y decidí realizarle algunas preguntas a sus integrantes.
¿De dónde nace la necesidad de crear un proyecto , aparte del de Papanegro?
Carlinhos: “A lo largo del tiempo que he estado en PapaNegro he participado en otros proyectos, como Zinatel (2004) y hacer música para TV con la productora Zumbastico Studios. En particular, durante el 2012 con Guayi empezamos a hacer canciones para un nuevo disco de PapaNegro y en el proceso surgió música que no estaba dentro del estilo. En vez de desecharlas decidimos crear un nuevo proyecto.”
¿De dónde nace el nombre?
Guayi: “El nombre nace de la misma necesidad de crear un proyecto aparte. Yo tenía varios nombres guardados que se me habían ocurrido en algún momento como para cuando hiciera mi proyecto paralelo. Y cuando este proyecto con Carlinhos empezó a tomar forma, saqué esa lista de nombres y escogimos Trendy Outfit. Siempre había imaginado que este nombre sería para una banda con música “sofisticada”, no teniendo para nada claro que significaba eso específicamente, pero creo que calzó bien con el estilo de música que hemos generado”
¿Qué estilo musical predomina en este proyecto?
Carlinhos: “Más que pensar en un estilo en particular, lo que predomina es una sensibilidad distinta a lo que proponemos en PapaNegro. Por un lado yo me dediqué a crear atmósferas sonoras con sintetizadores, guitarras y máquinas de ritmos, experimentar y poner en práctica cosas que hace tiempo quería hacer y que en una banda de 5 músicos es más difícil.
Por el lado de Guayi, hay un tono más introspectivo y oscuro en las letras y melodías. Además fue una instancia en donde él se reencontró con la música house de su infancia en Estados Unidos.
¿Cómo definirían a Trendy Outfit?
Carlinhos: la definiría como un dúo pop. Más que definirlo por un sonido más electrónico, lo definiría como un proyecto que simplemente pretende hacer canciones.
En este proyecto musical Carlinhos decidió explorar por los sintetizadores , mientras que Guayi se encargo de liberar melodías que guardaba y revivió su amor por los ritmos más house.
Pero eso no es todo, ya que “Trendy Outfit” no es solo música los chicos también rescataron la idea de hacer un cortometraje musical con esta mezcla de sonidos.
Este EP se ha estructurado en 5 capítulos en forma de canciones para acompañar la historia del protagonista de la misma.
Bulletproof es el primer single de este cortometraje imaginario llamado ANIMA , el video promocional de este tema fue creado junto al director Alvaro Ceppi y se enfoca en el proceso creativo como elemento primordial del desarrollo humano y de como la tecnología hoy en día nos permite concretar esa creatividad y liberarla al mundo. - Disco Rayado
Trendy Outfit está formado por dos integrantes de la banda chilena PapaNegro que sintieron la necesidad de expresarse fuera de la agrupación.
Dejando sus mentes y habilidades libres, Carlinhos exploró en lo profundo de su sensibilidad por los sintetizadores juntando todas sus máquinas, que hasta entonces no habían sido explotadas completamente, y les dio un nuevo aire encendiendo cada interruptor y girando cada perilla con una febril curiosidad.
Guayi, por su lado, pudo liberar esas melancólicas melodías que guardaba y revivió su amor por los ritmos house.
Mientras la música tomaba forma, activó su bagaje cinematográfico al adoptar la idea de hacer un cortometraje musical para envolver este nuevo sonido que estaba entrando en sus vidas. - Chilefunk

ANIMA
“ANIMA" follows the path of a young boy running away from hurt, heading for revenge only to find solace with his very own demons. This EP has been structured to have 5 distinct chapters in the form of songs to follow the story of our protagonist. Each song serves as the soundtrack to this imaginary short film."I AM FOREVER” our journey finds our boy running through the streets of his small town. His face shows his sadness and anger as he runs away from everything. Flashbacks of all the bad experiences and people come into mind, growing as he enters the deep woods. As he runs deeper and deeper, we sense his desperation mutate into motivation, drive, pushing him to keep going, hurtling all the obstacles. We finally catch sight of his objective, his small run down hideout. He enters to present us this amazing inventor’s shed, where he has long been expressing his mind through objects, this time his object of choice is a weapon, vengeance. He comes out to the open to test his invention, a small bird will be the victim. Boy aims, squeezes the trigger and backfires. Bird flies to safety, boy drops to the ground.
"SAVE YOUR TEARS”. It’s late, our unconscious boy’s face in the mire, a small, enlightened version of himself with a bird’s head exits his ear. Flies up and wanders through the forest back to where he came from. Soaring through the town streets he peeks into the lives of the people in his flashbacks. Their animal souls show us their true selves as their lives unravel before us. The bully kid takes off his wolf mask to reveal a lonely sheep, as his wolf dad and sheep mom are at each other’s throat in the room next door. The town princess sits at a table, her small duck head facing down while her old swan mother indoctrinates her with a firm hand. Our boy enters the room of a sleeping classmate, whispers in her ear and calls her animal self out to play. He gathers all the children and invites them back to the woods, the sanctuary.
“NICE” is the backdrop to their cathartic ritual. Dance, gameplay and laughs fill the night air under the stars as these small animal souls run amok, letting their childhood energy flow free.
"IT’S OVER”, the morning air starts to seep in and these magical creatures know it’s time to go. The real world is closing in and the celebration is over. Their eyes say goodbye and their hands let go, as their bodies call them back. Our boy finds himself once again alone in the woods, he slowly flies back to his body, crestfallen he enters his ear, his eyes open.
"BULLETPROOF (GLOWING IN THE DARK)”. Within the shed we see our boy hunched over his work bench, scribbling away, measuring, creating. Putting parts together, watching something grow. Little by little he advances in his invention and other kids start to join him as they too mould ideas into shape. Colourful exoskeletons, with masks, wings and lights cover their bodies reshaping them into their animal spirits. The door opens and these new creatures surge out into the night woods, filling it with childish wildness. The town streets are forced to welcome them and their new reign as our boy’s face lights up with laughter and satisfaction.

Trendy Outfit is made up of two bandmates (from the band PapaNegro) who felt the need to express themselves outside that unit. Letting their minds and their abilities go wild, Carlinhos dug deep into his synth driven heart and gathered his, to that day not yet fully exploited, sound machines to give them new life by flipping every switch and turning every knob with maddening curiosity. Guayi, on his part, set free all those melancholic melodies sealed within, but also revived his love for house music beats. His cinematic background also flourished as the music began to take shape, adopting the idea of a musical short film as the embodiment of this new sound that was coming into their lives.

Each chapter of the film has been developed with different directors, allowing multiple aesthetics and techniques to the short while maintaining a single storyline throughout.
NOTES ON PLAYING LIVE:
ANIMALIVE is an immersive experience, taking the audience along as the story unfolds through strong visual and technical imagery while engaging their bodies with the energy and power of the live performance. The concept and staging include projection mapping, augmented reality, visuals that interact with the audience, among other technologies.
