"Tribal Style-Olde Town"

Tampa's Tribal Style has managed to craft a meaty full-length that is both infectious and thoughtful. The quintet (which features three brothers) has delivered a charming synthesis of old-school reggae, R&B, funk and subtle turntablism to create a fresh sound that is at once classic and contemporary. Particularly arresting is the whispery, enchanting vocals of frontman Muthoni. His range is limited, but within that small space he makes each line simmer.

Bio

Roots reggae band, Tribal Style, was formed in Long Beach, CA in 1993 and moved to Tampa, FL in 1997. During their time in Tampa, they have distinguished themselves as the “premier reggae band” in the Bay Area. Transcending beyond the typical world beat/reggae genre, their music is unique and magnetic, attracting a diverse group of listeners. Known as a self-production team, Tribal Style writes, arranges and produces original music. Their sound is vibrant and has a consciousness which is attributed to their belief in God.

Founding members Muthoni (keyboards/vocals), Tokunbo “TK” (drums), and Mugabe Tenn (bass/vocals) hail from Kingston, Jamaica, and studied under reggae pioneers Black Uhuru and Wailing Souls. The trio attended the Jamaica School of Music and Connelly House, a private musical institute. The addition of artists Blake Yeager, an accomplished guitar instructor, and Michael “Blenda” Mendolusky, a talented DJ and percussionist, complete the band. Back up vocalist Thandiwe Tenn and Saxophonist Victoria King often share the stage and can be heard on their new album, Olde Town (2007). The Tenns’ father, Roddy, who played Nyabinghi drums on some of Bob Marley, Wailing Souls, Black Uhuru and the Rastafarian's early recordings, performs with the band on occasion, bringing the original essence of Rastafarian drums to the music.

Recently voted ‘2007 Best of the Bay – Reggae Band’ and ‘2007 Ultimate Local Band’, Tribal Style enjoys playing local benefit concerts and fundraisers to support the community. Tribal Style has grown from the local garage/skate park/backyard scene to share the stage with professional artists including Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, De La Soul, Abyssinians, Third World, The Skatalites, Aswad, The Slackers, James Brown, Skindred, Junior Gong, Toots and the Maytals, Israel Vibrations, Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. They have performed at festivals nationwide including the Bob Marley Festival in Miami, Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide Festival in North Carolina, James Brown Festival in Augusta, GA, Hemp Fest and Beach Fest in LA, and the Taste of Tampa. In 2004, they won the Grand Champion award in the band category at the World Championship of the Performing Arts in Hollywood, CA. They have been interviewed and have performed on radio stations such as IRIE FM in Jamaica; WMNF in Tampa, FL, and the television station TVJ in Jamaica.
