"Crystal Palace Media: On Tribe Mafia, rap music & Famous Birthdays"

MAY 8, 2019 BY BRANDON
Tribe Mafia (Hip-hop/Rap)
Dashawn Daniels, Chinasty, and Davon Green, make of the urban hip-hop group, Tribe Mafia. Their music gives off so much good energy and I believe that is why Tribe Mafia is currently making so many waves throughout the hip-hop and rap scene in their state of Texas. The group knows how to make catchy and trendy hip-hop songs, but they also highly value the underlining message in each verse and in every song. After several years of testing new sounds and new ideas, it is fare to say that the group is now finally hitting their apex. Each project they have recently worked on has been extremely fun listen to, fortunately for Tribe Mafia, I am not the only one thinking this. The group has seen a massive increase in their followers, streams, and views, in the last couple years. These numbers are great, but over the years of maturing as a group they have realized that chasing the numbers should never be the priority. The group now prioritizes the authenticity of their music, and their ability to balance the importance of powerful lyrics and the general trendiness of their beats. The Tribe Mafia group is young, energetic, and emit positivity into the lives of their listeners through their own music. They are truly just getting started, I’d watch their journey if I were you! Below is the full Q&A with Tribe Mafia. Enjoy!

Why did you choose your group name?
We have went through numerous names and group members. In our earlier days, we used to call ourselves C3ST, and then later we changed it to Mix Breed Bros (M.B.B.) Our day one supporters would know that part of our journey. The name of Mix Breed Bros actually Stuck with us for a while. Until we got into a dilemma on how that name may affect our image. It sounded too soft and cute, which we did not want. After some intensive brainstorming, we were able to come up with our new group name “Tribe Mafia”

Do you guys make music individually outside the Tribe Mafia group?
We really love making songs together because we feel that our voices and vocal delivery complements each other. If there is two of us on a song, we would normally label the song under Tribe Mafia. Yes we do make our own songs individually. We actually encourage each other to do so that way we will not be codependent.

What’s your guys back story? Where are you guys from? What has given you guys the grit and motivation to start and keep on going with your music? What has molded youl into the artists you are today?

We are from Pflugerville, Texas. A small town on the outskirts of Austin, Texas. What has giving us the motivation to make music was how well our chemistry is as a group and as family friends. We have all been knowing each other since high school. Chinasty and Davon Green went to Pflugerville High School, and Dashawn Daniels went to McNeil High school. This whole group started from by us free-styling at a local McDonald’s in town. There was a specific McDonald’s that everyone would go to after basketball games. Our peers at school would go nuts, and we ended up free styling every time we meet up. We also gain a lot of motivation from our experience of doing SXSW show. We landed our first major SXSW showcase, opening up Lil Flip. I want to say all of our supporters was there, and it was a sold out show. That show really taught us how to perform. It was at the 512 Bar on 6th street. The speakers and microphones blew out on us during our performance. Instead of getting upset, we decided to finish the performance with acapella. I think that one particular show was the reality check for us to understand anything can happen during a set, so we are always cautious of what may happen and how we can be proactive when issues like that does occur. We love performing and hearing our day-one supporters and new supporters sing our songs with us, that is the most uplifting type of energy we can never get enough of. Especially when they come to the show wearing our merchandise, we love our Tribe Supporters.

Who do y’all credit your ability to be who you are?
We have so many.. Our major influences include: Lil Wayne, Nas, Jay Z, B2K , Chris Brown, Kid Ink, Biggie Smalls, Tupac, Anthony Hamilton, Kanye West, Drake, Eminem, and the king of hip hop Michael Jackson. I am pretty sure I’m missing more influencers than that. These artists have made an impact on how we establish our voices. If you listen to our past songs and present songs you can see a lot of imitations that we had to go through to find our voices. These influencers has help us develop our material til this day.

Where does Tribe Mafia call home?

We are now located in the Dallas Fort-Worth area of Texas. We are all enrolled at University Of North Texas. We are now developing a buzz in this part town. Still holding it down for Austin though.

Could you explain to me the meaning of Tribe Mafia, how did it all start?
We wanted the name “Tribe Mafia” to hold strong values to our brand. Tribe Mafia to us essentially means Family and Business. A tribe will make sure everyone in the family is secured with love, and protection. The Mafia part is portray the power and business mentality we have. Our ethnic background also plays apart in our name. Dashawn Daniels and Davon Green are both Native American and Black. And Chinasty is Nigerian and Cuban. Just with those findings is understandable on how we were able to develop our teepee as our group logo. The teepee symbolizes home.

When did music come into your lives?
We will be going on 8 years. At first it was just a fun hobby, then people started offering us money. Now we are able to use this platform as job.
Who makes your beats?
We have our own producer and our own engineer that makes beats specifically to our sound. Shout out to RJ Maine!

If you could describe your music sound without using any popular music genres what would you describe it as?
Energetic, catchy and bouncy!

What’s your guys motto?
We can make any beat sound good based on how we approach it with our creativity. I think our creativity plays a huge roll in our craft.

What’s been your biggest struggle thus far?
We have been scammed so many times over the past years.
I want to say we lost at least $9000 dollars total due to scammers. People will sell you a dream. As independent artist it’s very easy for us to get scammed. We are consistently learning the game.

What’s been your biggest success thus far?
Being under the distribution deal Indie nation & Sony the orchard . They have gave us so many opportunities and resources to become successful.

What have you learned from both of these experiences?
Things happen for a reason. We learn how to overcome things that we cannot control and to just be more careful when making business moves. We are thankful to be apart of the indie nation team. Follow them on IG @IndieNation

What’s your view on the rap industry today? I believe there is a distinct divide between great music and music that sounds good in the moment.
Yes! We love to make lyrical songs but we also now we have to move with the wave. That’s why we try to make simple catchy hooks, but with in-depth meanings behind our verses. I feel we live in a culture we the audience just wants to hear the beat more than the words. So we are trying to break that rule by bringing back traditional hip-hop. At the same time we are still playing by the rules by making minor adjustments.

What makes your music different from the rest of the competition in the rap industry?
We know how to make catchy songs. Some people like to make tracks we want to make music. Whereas, tracks are one hit wonders. But good music will last. We believe from the reaction of our fans is that our song has great substance to compete against our competitors. We are also versatile, we are hip hop & r&b artist. So our fans can pick and choose on the type of music they want to hear from us.

What’s been your most successful song? What have you learned from this song that you will emulate into future projects?
Our song called “Triple Double” is doing huge numbers rn now. on Spotify with 16k plays and the music video on youtube has over 10k views. We learned that this type of style is at high demand right now with our fan base. And the numbers from the music video and Spotify and Apple Music reflects.

Collaborations are everything in the music Industry, what type of artists are looking to collab with in the coming future?
On a mainstream spectrum, we would love to work with Drake, Lil Wayne, Cardi B. , ect..
There are also a wide variety of locals we would love to work with, like Kynard, Mikeysee, Quin Nfn, Whoo Killed Kenny, Noah North, Kade Fresco, J Soulja, Royal Family and more. I also think a collaboration with a pop artist or Edm creative would be nice.

Any advice for artists starting out now that are trying to get a bigger audience?
Never stop believing in yourself, and trust your process. We started off recording in the bathroom with an iPhone 4 and had to get everything down perfect in one take. Whatever you have to do to start, do that and keep evolving. Also it is important to become friends with people who are going to make you look good, such as photographers, videographers, Djs, lawyers, bloggers. These are people who makes you relevant. Use your resources and connect the dots. Also we started off With a ratio of 20 followers and following 2000 people. Now we have about 50k. Also do not let the amount of followers, comments or likes discourage you. Focus on your craft and ALWAYS look for ways to improve. Be a student of your craft and you will excel greatly. Lastly remember that Patience is key.

What are things we can expect from you all in the coming future?
If you are in Austin you can watch are music videos being played on Tv, on the spectrum news channel. We will be going on tour with Indie Nation this summer. So be on the lookout for the dates. Be on the lookout for our new music video “Still The Same” featuring Bankroll Barbie!

Why should people give your music a listen?
Listen to us because we got the juice. If you want a fire playlist, or something good for the ear drums, Tribe Mafia will get you right. We also got a lot of big features coming up from some of your favorite mainstream artist. We welcome all supporters to be apart of the teepee Gang Family.
