"Trigger & Shake"

Completely dig-gable and danceable, Saskatoon's Trigger and Shake have been gigging all over the city. This well-versed, five-sometimes six-piece band have rocked some of the hottest venues in town, including The Publican, Lydia's Pub, Louis on campus, the Odeon, Amigo's, and The Ness Creek Music Festival where they delivered a driving main stage performance last summer. This February, "The Shake" as I call them, wowed a capacity crowd at Specklebelly's and most recently, their "mojo-filled" Mardi Gras show at Crawdaddy's Voodoo Lounge yielded the quintet multiple bids for beads and encores. Fresh, playful, inspired, groovy beats and soulful melodies make up the majority of Trigger and Shake's repertoire, familiar covers from the past greats are thrown in for the love of them. One might hear The Shake's portrayal of Santana’s’ Black Magic Woman’, Steppenwolf’s 'Magic Carpet Ride', or The Beatles' 'Hey Bulldog', on any given "lucky night". Nikki Haberstock brings the electric edge with their own brands of guitar mastery. Clive Stretch is on the big, bad bass. Funky Jake Hardy is on drums and per-cussion. Singer Jason Clark serves up the potion. The funky, jazzy, rock, reg-gae stylings and groove that’ shapes 'The Shake' is an absolute essential for Saskatoon's music scene. With a self-titled album in the studios and a song currently receiving airplay in the U.K. and the British Isles, touring may just be in the dance card for 'The Shake'. Seeing Trigger and Shake live, one gets an appreciation, a sense of enlightenment as to how purely talented these boys really are. Not only are they passionate and honest about their music, they come together to induce a wild, fun ride for everyone, so dust off your red shoes and check them out on their next outing at The Publican on April the 11th and 12th. See you there!! - Life In the City

"Shaken & Stirred - Trigger & Shake"

Trigger and Shake has turned into one of Saskatoon’s worst keep musical secrets. For the last two and half years, the quintet has been filling venues to capacity with their unique blend of Reggae, Jazz, Blues and Rock. With airplay in the UK and America, and devoted following right here in sunny Saskatoon, the release of their self-titled CD promises to be a resounding success.
Trigger & Shake is a well-crafted, ambitious project that took a year to finish. “(It’s) totally indie. We did everything ourselves at Egg Crate Studios,” lead singer Edwin Viloria says.
Ranging from arty blues feedback arraignments on “Sooner or Later” to warm Reggae tunes like “Another Tear”, the album is sure to appeal to a diverse selection of musical tastes. Although their sound is sometimes categorized as “happy” music, Viloria says the band’s feel is hard to pin down.
“People always as us what genre of music we play and we can’t really explain. Musically, we’re all over the place. We touch on a bit of reggae, a bit of jazz, a bit of funk – even a bit of modern rock. We don’t mind being labeled as playing happy and positive music, but I do think that there is a bit of angst in the mix. For example, “Deny Me” is all about someone who just couldn’t be good enough for someone he’s close to, like a father figure.”
Trigger & Shake’s Live show combine the diversity of the band’s ages and backgrounds in a mixture that electrifies audiences. Tim Vaughn’s Hendrix inspired guitar riffs, combined with Chad Haberstock’s bass, Nikki Haberstock’s backbeat guitar work and Jake Hardy’s drums showcases some of the best musical talent Saskatoon has to offer.
Viloria, who writes most of the band’s lyrics, says he tries to touch a common chord with his songs.
“Sometimes when I write, I’ll put myself in another person’s shoes and write about how I would feel if I was him or her.
“Musically, we’re all over the place. We touch on a bit of reggae, a bit of jazz, a bit of funk – even a bit of modern rock…” Edwin Viloria
“For example, “Another Tear” was written about a friend of mine that had just gotten out of a relationship and I just wanted to tell her, ‘Hey, there will be others…”
The band may go on tour come summertime, so watch out for Trigger & Shake on the road; ala Hard Core Logo without the addiction and attitude?
Trigger and Shake continue to defy attempts at categorization and deliver something that is badly needed in any scene—good, solid, meaningful music and a great live show. If by some chance you miss their CD release, watch for them at Spoondrop Entertainment’s Open Stage February 28th at Lydia’s.
