"Trio win Xtreme band slam"

After four years in the making, the hard work and dedication of a Timmins band has finally paid off.

They call themselves Trikl-Tshyn, and the three member group has just won the Xtreme Band Slam in North Bay, beating out 17 other music groups in the process.

Comprised of Shaun Melanson (vocals and guitar), Andre Genest (bass, background vocals), and Mike Blais (drums), Trikl-Tshyn has won the rights to perform at the Xtreme Band Slam in Toronto in 2003, as part of Canadian Music Week.

"There were some really good bands in North Bay," commented Melanson. "Plus, seven of the bands were from North Bay, so they had the home crowd advantage.

"Going into the finals, we were in fifth place and only seven bands were good enough to advance to the next stage. The finals took place on December 14, and we totally stole first place out from underneath another band, that I'm sure judges thought had the competition wrapped up."

"We're very happy with our performance last weekend, we gave it 110 per cent and it was the best we've ever done," Blais said. "We amazed ourselves and everyone else.
"This accomplishment gives us a foot in the door because the next Band Slam will be packed with producers and agents looking to sign bands.

"We'll be playing .in the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, where anybody who is anybody has played including the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and so many more."

"We're all very excited, we can't wait to go down," Genest added. "It'll be a great opportunity to network with some of the top people in the music industry. We have no delusions of grandeur, we don't expect to win the competition.

"We just want to meet Other people, although it would be nice to win. If we played like we did in North Bay, then we will have a pretty good chance."This isn't the first time that Trikl-Tshyn has competed in the Xtreme Band Slam. In fact, they took the stage last year but didn't meet with such positive results and they missed making it to me finals by several points.

"We played 100 times better this year than we did last year," Melanson explained.

"We keep getting better, even the judges told us that we outplayed ourselves from last year's competition. We've been spending a lot of time perfecting our sound, and there's been definite improvements."
In winning Xtreme Band Slam, Trikl-Tshyn were also awarded festival passes to the Canadian Music Week 2003; a gift certificate from Metalworks Studios, valued at $1,000; web-site design courtesy of AMG Aleithia Music Group; a promotional kit courtesy of eventsnorth.com; 10 hours of recording time courtesy of Silverbeach Sound; a professional photo shoot courtesy of Alfred Boyd Photography; and an
e-commerce site courtesy of RDR Music Group. Should Trikl-Tshyn prevail in Toronto, they could win another $50,000 in prizes.

Trikl-Tshyn is currently in the midst of producing their first album, entitled Oddly Deranged. Their hectic schedule did not allow for much practice, however, the members still managed to jam three nights a week to prepare for the competition.

"Our goal is to go all the way," Melanson continued. "We plan to play a gig at The Victory Tavern in February, we do that every couple of months to get feedback from the public."

Bio

In 1999, after being in several other bands, Singer/Guitarist Shaun Melanson, Drummer Mike Blais and Bassist/Vocalist Andre Genest decided to start a band together.

Less then a year into their endeavors, their debut album entitled "Words Unspoken'' was recorded. Over the next few years, the band played through-out Ontario earning a strong reputation for high intensity concert performances and hard hitting tunes.

In 2003, TRIKL-TSHYN brought home the top award for an X-treme Band Slam competition. TRIKL-TSHYN then competed on a national level and placed in the top three un-signed bands across Canada. Getting an "entertainer of the year" award from press and great revues from chart attack magazine.

In 2004, Adding Cory on lead guitar, TRIKL-TSHYN returned to the studio to record their latest album ..." In My Head"...
Shortly after, the singles " In Time "and "Sanctaty" where released on Q-92 FM, a Northern Ontario radio station.

With two awards on the shelf and the new songs on the radio, people are connecting with the band TRIKL-TSHYN.

This phenomenon has created a constantly growing fan base, and increasingly larger concert audiences.
