"AHEAD OF HIS BAND’S SINGLE LAUNCH, GUITARIST BEN EVANS, FROM LOCAL RETRO POPSTERS TRIP SINISTER, EXPLAINS TO TONY MCMAHON HOW ORANGUTANS AND 80S FASHION GO SO WELL TOGETHER."

“We were thinking of a strategy to sell our first single,” says Evans, explaining how proceeds from the sale of Dancin’ With The Black Top will go towards an Orangutan adoption program. “So tethering some of the funds to a cause seemed to be a great way to resolve the issue that people have with buying new music these days. We thought that supporting a non-political charity was the way to go. Orangutans are beautiful creatures, they face extinction by deforestation and poaching, and the regions they inhabit are right on our doorstep. So it seemed like a great place to start.”
Okay, let’s talk wardrobe. As some of us at Time Off are, um, mature enough to remember the 80s, it’s great to feel like we weren’t making complete fools of ourselves.
“Oh, the fashion is what it’s all about. Might I say that there is too much flannel and band t-shirts for my liking these days? My whole vision is to transport the viewer with the image onstage as well as the music. I want it to intrigue people and make them think, or even laugh to be honest. Some of it is a little bit Mighty Boosh, but behind all that is the idea that fashion movements and music go hand in hand.”
So, is Dancin’ With The Black Top indicative of what we'll hear from future Trip Sinister releases? Just like the daggy decade itself, Evans says we should expect the unexpected.
“We’re always writing new and interesting stuff; Trip Sinister is going to be quite diverse in the way they put together an album. The next single, Champagne Glasses is an electro-tango. We have others that have a ‘Garbage’ flavour to them, and some are just like Human League/ Cure inspired electro-pop. I love bands that give you different flavours.”

"The story behind Trip Sinister and its love for the ‘80s"

BEN EVANS from Brisbane-based ‘80s new wave revivalist trio TRIP SINISTER, answers some questions for RAVE.

What’s the story behind Trip Sinister and its love for the ‘80s?

The ‘80s was such an eclectic time for music, and just an awesome mixture of big production values (e.g. Duran Duran) and by contrast low budget recordings (e.g. early Cure or New Order). The music had a sense of optimism and fun that I love with a hint of the dark side.

When can we expect a new Trip Sinister EP?

I am actually speaking to a few producers at the moment. I hope to over the next couple of months to re-release the EP Electro Nonsense. I am aiming for February 2011.

I understand you released a single with the proceeds going towards an Orang-utan charity?

We wanted to stand out from the start; and we want our music to be bought and heard. To encourage people to pay for this release we thought that supporting a worthwhile charity with the proceeds would be the way to go. Orang-utans are a non-political entity and the girls and I are mad animal fans. So far we have adopted two little guys; next time I think we are going to support pandas, then tigers.

What was the inspiration behind the music video for your song Modern Assassin?

In 2008 I met up with an old friend from high who by coincidence became an independent film director. I wanted the song to be about modern warfare as well as humanity’s need for violence in sport. This is all behind the friendly veil of the film clip that in my opinion was beautifully shot on a shoestring budget under my parent’s place of business in Milton on one hot and tiresome night.

If Trip Sinister was an ‘80s movie, which one would it be?

We would be a double bill of Blade Runner followed by Beverly Hills Cop … Loads of analogue synths, one liners, awesome stories that are both intriguing and ridiculous. Not to mention the sci-fi ‘80s fashion from Blade Runner … Win!

TRIP SINISTER play The Alibi Room (New Farm) on Friday Oct 29 alongside My Cerulean Heart, then The Halloween Monsters Ball at The Step Inn on Saturday Oct 30 alongside Tropical Vampirates, The Go-Go Haunters and many more. They also play The Music Kafe on Thursday Nov 4. Check out www.myspace.com/tripsinister for more information.

Bio

Trip Sinister is a new wave pop group with a modern twist from Brisbane Australia. Their sound has been described as fun upbeat and fresh; “retro punk for the year 2010” (Alex Greggs Producer South Rakkas Crew record label). Trip Sinister is headed by composer, sound engineer, lyricist and multi-instrumentalist Ben Evans. Together with the vocal and lyrical genius of Rachel Mulcair, the analogue synth sounds and punk styling of Nix L’ Fatale, the group have a unique blend of youth, experience and style that cuts through much of the emerging music scene. The driving force of Trip Sinister is the ambition to create fun and memorable music reminiscent of the late 70’s and 80’s electro pop/ new romantic movement. ‘Dancin’ with the Blacktop’, a song about emerging from the darkness and into the light, is befitting the musical journey of the band from obscurity to recognition; ‘Melt like a snowflake greeting the sun, all the darkness coming undone’. The song also echo’s the upbeat and powerful nature of synth pop songs from the likes of Spandau Ballet and the Human League, coupled with a style befitting a Vivienne Westwood catwalk show. Through their music, Trip Sinister aims to demonstrate these driving forces as a brief segue to a larger opus of work yet to come.
