Banawurun

Troy Brady in an aboriginal man. One day, whilst on some traditional business in far north Queensland, his uncle asked him: “Who’s gonna throw my spear once I’m gone.” This inspired and moved Troy so much that he wrote a song about it. From that moment on BANAWURUN was born.

Described by The Australian as “the revelation of the 2005 Woodford Folk Festival” and winner of Band of the Year at the 2006 Deadly Awards, sensational singer-songwriters Troy Brady and Trevelyn Brady deliver songs that will either make you move or make you cry. Setting them apart from other bands is their ability to engage a crowd through their music, their message and their uncanny ability to fire up a crowd during a live show. “Absolutely brilliant” are the words you’ll be saying as you leave their show empowered and feeling a sense of unification.

BANAWURUN featuring Troy n Trevelyn are an electrifying band from Brisbane, Australia, performing an all-original repertoire. They will either have the crowd up on their feet dancing or sitting back awestruck by the soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics. After numerous shows across Australia many are describing this group as the hottest they have seen in years.

BANAWURUN is led by the amazingly talented duo of Troy and Trevelyn. Troy is an aboriginal man from the Kuku Yalanji and Birri Gubba clan groups of North Queensland. Troy’s passion for his culture and zeal for his music combine to exude a charismatic onstage showman. Onstage, Troy’s live persona has often been likened to that of Lenny
Kravitz. Offstage, Troy’s song writing skills have seen him become a finalist in the 2006 APRA Professional Development Awards. Trevelyn, meanwhile, hails from the African nation of Zimbabwe. Similarly, Trevelyn’s love of her Mother Country and her commitment and dedication to her work are obvious when she belts out her songs. Her powerful voice captivates audiences who can’t help but be spellbound.

BANAWURUN’s music is a fusion of modern day soul, reggae and pop, complemented with flavour from their Aboriginal and Zimbabwean cultures. On a recent trip to Los Angeles in the USA they played at the prestigious Viper Room as part of the Musexpo conference. Their unique sound was appropriately labelled by the Americans as “Outback Motown”. They perform all original songs including Why Can’t I, the edgier I'm Sorry and
their single Power to the People – which was recently nominated as Single Release of the Year at the 2006 Deadly Awards. All of these titles are included in their debut EP titled “Change”.

The remaining band members possess a versatility that would be hard to match. Musical director and keyboard player James Feagai and drummer Myka Wallace are both classically trained having spent time at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Lead guitarist Jason Collins and bass guitarist Josef Muller both possess numerous years of
experience in the music industry and Craig Kemp is the band’s didgeridoo player and traditional percussionist.
