"University Of Germany Interview"

1.WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVATION TO CREATE?
i don´t feel good in my life.
the only time good is when i do something like create.
i feel better creating than when i´m not creating.

2.HOW IMPORTANT IS THE IDEA OF A PRODUCTION SITE FOR YOU?
Not important at all, because i don´t know what it is.
...
It used to be very important, but then i lost control of that, because i´ve been travelling so much.
I realized that it was less important than i thought. You can basically do it anywhere, if you want to, if you need to. I used to have to have my own room.

3.HOW IMPORTANT IS MASS-SPREADING FOR YOU AND YOUR WORK?
It´s important. Because everyone wants to be liked. Everyone wants to feel like what they are doing is interesting. And everyone needs other people tell them that what they are doing is interesting.
After a certain point. In the beginning you can do it for yourself, and along the way you can do some for yourself, but part of it is having other people be exposed to it.
It´s part of the deal.
Of course, if I was on a desert island, with a lot of writing tablets, even if I thought nobody would read them ever, I would still write.
But I´m not on a desert island. So I want people to hear it.

4.DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF OR YOUR WORK PART OF MASS-CONSUMPTION?
I don´t considser myself part of that, because people don´t mass-consume my music.
HOW WOULD U FEEL U WERE?
I´d feel great, because I´d be sitting on my fucking island that I bought, in my mansion protected by laserguns, drinking champagne and doing coke.
ISN´T MUSIC INDUSTRY MADE FOR THAT?
Yeah, but I´m not a successful musician. I´m not a famous musician with all these millions of dollars. So I wouldn´t consider myself part of that.
It would be great. I can almost taste the pink champagne on ice. That´s an Eagles-quote.

5.DOES REPRODUCTION HELP TO A MORE VALID EXISTENCE?
Yes, it does. Not that I think that the piece is any better, because it was reproduced or mass-produced, but it makes you feel like you can leave that one resting, like it had its purpose. It was like a child and went out to do something, and then you can forget about it; like most children. Like real children, you know.
It´s like when I did my first album, it felt good that they pressed thousands of albums. I never listen to the album, and I don´t ever want to, but it felt good that it was out there somewhere. Even though I wouldn´t ever know the people or anything, it just felt good. Maybe it was worth something not only to me but to other people, too. Of course, we didn´t sell any of those, but still it was neat that they made them. The first chokebore album.
I remember thinking it was really cool that they just pressed thousands of these things, so that it´s kind of in the world. It had been in my had for so many years before and then weird people that i don´t know are gonna listen to it. I thought that was really exciting.
Nothing ever comes of it. It doesn´t go farther than interesting, an interesting concept and feeling, but that´s the whole thing. It´s everything. Nothing is anything, except if it´s interesting and fun for your life.
What I´m doing is not important.

6.DO YOU OWN A FACTORY, IN THE ABSTRACT SENSE? WHAT KIND IS IT?WHAT DOES IT PRODUCE?AND HOW BIG IS IT?
No, I don´t own a factory. I don´t think about what I´m doing as factory-stuff at all. What I´m doing is very frail and always fleeting, illusive and superthin, and always at that edge of just beyond what I can do. I don´t think of it as a factory at all. It´s not that solid.
Are my answers too depressing? I´m just trying to be honest.

7.IN WHAT RELATIONSHIP DO YOU SEE A CONSUMER AND A COLLECTOR?
There´s a huge difference between the average consumer and a person who is a collector, who really listens. I´ve run into lots of those, because my band was obscure. So we had weird people coming there, and they´d really listen and come to every show. And then there´s lots of people who just kinda listened, and then bought the stuff. I always love the collectors. They are interesting, because they are interested.
It´s much more interesting for them when they like something. They are always closer to the root of the music, because they really took time. And they really listen well, and they have trained ears. Freaky brains. Like Yannick. Compared to the average guy. I´m fascinated by this kind of people. I wouldn´t want to be one, and i´m not one. I wish I could appreciate deeply like that. I´m not fanatical. I don´t collect things, and I´m not interested in anything that much.

8.WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COLLECTOR OF ART AND A COLLECTOR OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS?
Nothing. It´s exactly the same. It´s just a different aesthetic. It´s the same exact mind. There´s no difference.

9.DO YOU COLLECT ANYTHING AND WHY? DOES THAT HAVE ANY INFLUENCE ON YOUR WORK?
No, I don´t collect anything. My grandfather was a stamp collector, and my uncle was a huge collector. My father w - University Of Germany
