Instrumental metal is not unheard of, but it is certainly not as common as its vocalized brethren. What stands out most about the Calgary-based trio Truck is not their instrumental proclivity; it’s their sense of humour. Metal is a genre that takes itself far too seriously, while Truck gladly proclaim their similarity to “the greatest f*cking sandwich you’ve ever had in your life. Period.”
Casey Rogers, bassist and de facto frontman, speaks between songs at live shows with a combination of dry humour, sarcasm, and flat-out absurdity. Guitarist Scott Taylor and drummer Bryan Sandau will respond from time to time with their own sarcastic quips shouted across the stage. This sense of playfulness does come out in both their music and live performances; however, it is their technical skill that should draw you in.
I have seen a great deal of live shows from multiple genres of music over the years. During this time, I have heard exactly two studio-quality shows. These shows had three things in common: Scott Taylor, Bryan Sandau, and Steve Moore (we’ll get to him later). The bands were Inner Surge (January, 2008) and Truck (October, 2010).
This exceptional metal trio have recently released an album, available in two versions. Head on down to their official site at http://www.truckband.net/ to download the instrumental version for free. If you want the vocal version, drop them a line and harass them about setting up their CDBaby account. After the demise of Calgary agro metal band Inner Surge, the rhythm section continued writing songs under the name Truck. The music was a lot more complicated and varied than their previous band and was full enough to hold its own without vocals. Truck did however record their debut album, entitled Passengers, as a special edition featuring 6 prominent vocalists in the the Calgary metal and rock scene. Truck is continuing to write and plans to follow up with a second album of instrumental songs followed by another special edition featuring vocalists from other bands from western Canada.
