"Truly Preezy"

A man of many talents, Deprey Lane also known by his stage name Truly Preezy is a versatile rapper who was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Coming from a family who also share the same passion for music, Preezy was inspired to start his rapping career by his cousin and uncle. He began displaying his talent in seventh grade at his high school talent show, and he has only grown since then.

Preezy’s greatest achievement was graduating high school which led him to be the first in his family to pursue a college career. He motivates himself by continuing to keep his head up and only strive for greatness during his low times. He finds his music really relatable to his audience who may struggle with the same personal issues that he is also going through. His drive for success is very evident in and out the studio. He teaches perseverance as he raps, “Strive and work hard for what you want in life and do not let anyone crush your dreams. We all have a dream.” Preezy looks up to Tupac and J. Cole, and in five years he sees himself working at a studio with a team of phenomenal artists. However, his ultimate goal is to be the absolute best he can be and to hopefully inspire other individuals through his music. Preezy’s advice to those wanting to pursue the same path is to not follow others, but to always be yourself. - MVAMAGAZINE

"Truly Preezy: It’s Up To The Artists To Up The Ante"

Check out the interview with Truly Preezy exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Truly Preezy: It all began when I was 7 years old. My uncle Bizzy moved in with me and my parents. I looked up to my uncle as if he was my big brother since I am the only child. He used to always listen to Tupac and write music in his journal. I used to see him freestyle all the time around the house. Seeing him do that almost every day began to be more appealing to me.

What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
I promote my music with social media, connecting with others, blogs, performances, and word of mouth. Instead of asking people to retweet or like tweets, I just post the music and pray that people like it.

What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
My greatest challenge that I face is staying true to myself. It is hard trying to be yourself at times. If there is a type of music that is being hyped and my style does not fit in that category, I have less supporters because of that. I overcome them by saying this to myself, “All good things go to those who stay true.”

How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
Music in Houston now is completely different from how it originated. I am not saying that is a bad thing, but it is different. I feel like the true good Houston artists does not get enough credit. I love our style and our history, but I don’t like when rappers from Houston out here bite other state’s flow/style.

Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
I feel like music will go back to actually being rap. I feel like in the future artists will compete with each other more. Better bars and competition is what music needs. I feel like artists can be more a part of it if they just create better music. Simple.

What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
The best advice I can give to anyone is to be yourself. Don’t try to follow the hype to fit in. Do you. The fakes get exposed, so it’s best to stay true to yourself. Chase the dream, don’t chase the money. You have to keep your eyes open because there are a lot of shady people in this world. Just stay focused and maintain.

What inspires you to write your next song?
Being overlooked helps me write my next song. All my life I been overlooked in so many different aspects, but that is what makes me grind harder. I feel like I am one of the best artists out here and I have the potential to be someone. Also, the struggle is my motivation. I wasn’t the poorest, but I’m sure not rich.

What are the steps you take to make a song?
It all starts off with the beat. I play it over and over again. As I am listening to it I try to come up with an idea of how I am going to flow. I freestyle until I say something I want to write down for the verse. Yes, I start my songs with the verses first. Once I handle the verses, I work on the hook. Once I got the hook done, I head to the studio and record it.

What do you think makes a great song?
First off, the beat has to be a banger. Producers are very important when it comes to making a song and I feel like they do not get enough credit. Second, the hook has to be extremely catchy. The hook is what makes a person wants to listen to the song and catch their attention. Third, your verse has to be some heat. You have to come with some bars. - SKILLY ONLINE
