Trumpet Grrrl – DIY Style in unexpected ways

Hailing from Maryland, Trumpet Grrrl is girl after my own heart. Self producing and recording her work, her debut release, “The Basement Tracks,” showcases her synthesis of vocals, keys, and punchy brass. I feel some new wave influences in her work too. An avid videographer, Trumpet Grrrl’s videos, in addition to her infectious confidence, are an inspiration to all the ladies out there who want to create art without limitations. Check out her video below and her various pop-star covers on youtube. I am floating up! - Jukebox Heroines

"Meet Trumpet Grrrl"

I’ve got some new music for you to take a listen to. Fair warning…it’s a little different from what you normally hear here, but that’s what’s cool.

So here are the deets:
Trumpet Grrrl first started playing the trumpet at age 10. Her bio says, “Despite a lack of natural talent on the instrument, she practiced hard and joined many youth music programs” which cracked me up. I love a gal who won’t give up. Usually this means that the result isn’t going to be very good, but hang on:

“As a result she, performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, played at Carnegie Hall and met many well renowned classical musicians.”

Pretty great, huh?

So in 2010 she started recording this project, The Basement Tracks made in, of course, her basement studio. She wrote all the songs and produced them all herself (with the exception of the track, Amaryllis, whose beats were done by PT Burnem).

It’s a little off the beaten track, but really pretty cool! Trumpet Grrrl is based in Burtonsville, MD. - Collected Sounds

"A piano-and-horn eccentric goes to the Botanic Garden"

Standout Track: No. 2, “Amaryllis,” whose jazzy melody and smoky trumpet prelude wouldn’t sound out of place soundtracking an early Spike Lee film. Over crashing cymbals and tuneful keys, Trumpet Grrrl—known to her friends as Christina Coleman—sings in a deep alto, “I am the amaryllis/with delusions of grandeur.” Coleman performs solo on most of her songs, which are marked by her eccentric, sonorous vocals and playful tempo changes. In “Amaryllis,” the beats come courtesy of hip-hop artist P.T. Burnem.

Musical Motivation: Coleman was wandering through the United States Botanic Garden when an amaryllis caught her eye. She found a familiar metaphor. “I’m the flower stuck in the botanical gardens, trying to get out in the world,” she says. “This year I had a lot of financial hardship, so I’m trying to blossom out of that.” The 24-year-old Burtonsville resident tutors young children, but she’s confident music will be her main source of income one day. She calls the “delusions of grandeur” lyric “a little sardonic. I 100 percent believe I’m going to be very successful in music.”

Late Bloomer: “When I picked up the horn, I was like the last chair in the worst band,” says Coleman, who began playing at 10. “But I was obsessed with the trumpet, and by the end of the year I was first chair.” Her senior year of high school, when she started working with a new teacher, she discovered she’d been positioning the instrument incorrectly against her face. “I basically had to relearn to play,” she says. Last summer, she taught herself to simultaneously play piano with her left hand and trumpet with her right. “I have a very front-woman type of personality,” she says. “I thought marketing-wise, it would set me apart.” - Washington City Paper - "One Track Mind" Feature

Bio

Trumpet Wom (formerly known as Trumpet Grrrl) is a triple threat who combines trumpet, keys and singing into original song writing. She has recorded with GRAMMY winning producer Scott Jacoby and at Converse Rubber Tracks in New York City.  T'Wom sounds like a mix of Nina Simone and David Bowie her; “low and sultry voice and [her] trumpet skills blow the listener’s mind”, praises the Music Historian.

One fall day T'Wom sat down to record some demo tracks, a month and half later she had an album.  "The Basement Tracks" was released in October of 2010.  The following January T'Wom's song "Amaryllis" was featured in the Washington City Paper’s One Track Mind page.  T'Wom then went on to release her sophomore album on January 17, 2012.   The album; “It All Starts Here," was produced and recorded by Trumpet Wom and partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign.

Born June 13, 1986 on a Friday, Trumpet Wom’s interest in music began early.  At the age of 10, Trumpet Wom started playing trumpet in her elementary school band.  Her obsession was immediate; youth music ensembles, private lessons and summer camps were just the beginning of her classical music training.  She would go on to perform at Carnegie Hall and with the National Symphony Orchestra through programs such as the NSO Fellowship.

She received a Bachelor's of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Maryland in 2008.  During her last months of college, Trumpet Wom formed the rock band La Coterie where she began to play keyboard, sing lead vocals and compose.  After a fun and wild two years, she decided to leave La Coterie and a few months later officially started the project of Trumpet Wom.  Here is when she started to teach herself to play trumpet and piano at the same time.

Originally from Maryland, T'Wom moved to New York City in 2012. Trumpet Wom' whose mission is to elevate humanity to a happier and healthier way of being is currently self-recording her fifth album "Evolution" and moved to Philadelphia, PA in 2018.
