""INAUGURAL 'NESIAN FEST SLATED FOR SATURDAY""

Inaugural 'Nesian Fest slated for Saturday
Posted By Ernest Jasmin on November 17, 2010 at 11:41 am

Local hip-hop and R&B group Island Trybe is trying to end a sad year on a positive note beginning with ‘Nesian Fest, which starts at 8 p.m. Saturday at Hell’s Kitchen.

Island Trybe organized the event with Aomas Entertainment as a showcase of Pacific Islanders active in the local hip, R&B and reggae scenes. As Island Trybe manager Sean Lizama explained, “’Nesian” is just shorthand for some of the regions local Islanders hail from - Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia.

“The whole ‘Nesian Fest really is just a coming together of all that,” he said. “Next year we might do it in the summer time. But I figured this would be a good time to get it started.”

But it’s also an emotional time for Island Trybe, a group that has been easing back into performing after the deaths of two band members this summer.

Vocalist Les Alo spent several days in the hospital in July and died a few days after his release. And just two weeks later band mate Doug Norris, Jr. died in an auto accident while driving home from a nightclub in Olympia.

“It was very hard. It was torturous,” recalled Lizama. “We’re just getting back to it. We owe it to these guys to just keep pushing.”

Along with Island Trybe, Saturday’s lineup includes Aomas Entertainment, Po, D’Rocc, Forewa Greenroots, Soul Kuljah and Alo Key, a soul singer from Independence, Missouri. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door; www.hellskitchenonline.com.

Call 253-232-5519 or check Island Trybe's MySpace page for more details.

Bio

Trybe Fam Hailing from Tacoma Washington, primarily consists of a merge between Island Trybe & Lae-Z-Boi Productions signifying the Chamorro-Samoan connection here in the Northwest. Trybe Fam started out just making music as the group Island Trybe back in 1997 & established itself as a business, forming Trybe Fam Entertainment in 2008.

In January of 2009 Trybe Fam Ent. merged with Lae-Z-Boi Productions, another local label that was owned & ran by childhood friends Les'sonz & Po. Lae-Z-Boi was responsible for making a huge impact in the local music scene in the early 2000's. By Dropping albums "Mind over matter" by Les'sonz & the "My City" Label compilation album, Lae-Z-Boi developed a huge fanbase. The refreshing sound that Trybe Fam brings to the game is the result of a unique mixture between the flavors that in-house producers B.O.I. & LES'SONZ bring to the table. Backed by a diversified group of talented artists, this refreshing sound makes for a breath of fresh air in a polluted atmosphere.

Island Trybe was created in 1996 by YD & childhood friend J-Boi, shortly after YD's younger brother B.O.I. & another childhood friend RoccJuan joined the group. A couple of years after the group was formed, Island Trybe released their first album self titled "Island Trybe". After the first album was released, YD headed back home to (the pacific island of) Guam for the next year, where he released 2 songs "Lets do it" & "My Island" both of which made it to the top local radio station on the island. "Lets do it" made its way to #1 & held that spot for 3 months while "My Island" made its way into the regular rotation. Not long after heading back to Washington the group took a break. Eventually members J-Boi & RoccJuan went their own ways. While raising their families, the passion for music never left the last two members, which happened to be the 2 brothers. Fast forward to 2006, after reconnecting with Kuzzin Pizzo, the group found & recruited its final member. In 2006 Island Trybe emerges back on the music scene with "The Marination" a joint collaboration with Syncere of the Certified Soulja Click from Washington DC. In 2008 Island Trybe formed Trybe Fam Entertainment & released "Fresh off da grill" towards the end of the year. In the beginning of 2009 Trybe Fam Ent. merged with Lae-Z-Boi Productions & dropped Po's debut album "P.O. BOXX" shortly after the merge.

Trybe Fam-Lae-Z-Boi RnB/Soul singer Po was born into musicianship. His Parents, siblings, relatives...ALL musicians!! Po singing in church choirs and small doo-wop groups formed in his neighborhood and schools. 'PO' which is short for his first name, plays a little piano and ALOT of drums! Po also writes, sings, arranges and produces out of Brownstarr Studios. He's going back to school to polish up on some music theory & he hopes one day to perfect his craft.

Trybe Fam has brought hope to the Northwest region with their relentless hustle throughout 2009 & 2010. From 49 performances in 2009, 47 throughout the state of Washington, 1 in Las Vegas, Nv & 1 in Temecula, Ca to headlining their own shows to also performing at the SEATTLE HEMPFEST
(which draws over 200,000 people) 3 years in a row ('08, '09 '10) as well as performing with some of the industry's big headliners, such as E-40, TWISTA, MARQUES HOUSTON, WARREN G, TOO SHORT, DEVIN THE DUDE, BABY BASH, GS BOYZ, MR FAB, SPICE-1, BIZZY BONE, B-REAL & REGGAE ARTISTS STEEL PULSE, FIJI, TRIBAL THEORY, PAU HANA & ONE DROP.

Despite their busy performance schedules Island Trybe & Po Boxx still make time to give back to their communities and/or those in need by participating & throwing fundraisers & benefit shows. Together as a team Island Trybe & Po Boxx have helped raise money for the Island of Samoa, Japan, The NW Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, The Eastside of Tacoma Boys & Girls Club. They've also helped raise money for the family of a young lady who was killed on Super Bowl Sunday on the Eastside of Tacoma (2010) and for a young girl from Lakewood who lost both of her parents tragically at the same time. Island Trybe & Po Boxx also had the priviledge of participating in the 2010 Washington State Census Campaign by having B.O.I. of Island Trybe, Les'sonz & Po Boxx on the Census song "Count Me In" along with several other NorthWest artists, along with being in the music video made for an extraordinary experience for both artists.

Being raised in the states & rooted in the islands automatically sets Trybe Fam apart from the rest of the pack. With influences ranging from Hip Hop to Island Style Reggae and R&B, Trybe Fam-Lae-Z-Boi brings you a new, refreshing sound.
