"Plesantly Surprised"

In today’s vanilla flavored music market where Artists repeat the obvious, I was pleasantly surprised by T.Sams. This first project, introduces us to this Artist’s potential. I especially liked the lyrics and passionate delivery of ‘How Can He Say’ I was truly captivated. Great first effort, I would recommend this CD to anyone. This Artist can only get better, I look forward to hearing from him on future projects. - CD Baby

"AllMusicShop.com June 2004 Hot Spot Artist"

1. AMS: Could you tell us something about your background?

T.Sams: I have a pretty large family. I was born in Miami Florida, but my family moved to Lakeland Florida when I was very young. My family has always been involved with music. My father was our church’s Choir Master and he had his own gospel group that traveled the country. Two of my brothers were in local bands, so I spent most of my spare time trying to convince them to take me with them to choir practice or band rehearsal my brothers would even sneak me into their gigs sometimes, it was great. When I was six I convinced my mother that I was mature enough to join the choir and I became the youngest member of our church’s Junior Choir. Thus began my love affair with music.

2. AMS: How did you get into the music business and when did you decide to become a solo singer?

T.Sams: I was part of a hometown Male R&B Group called K.R.U.S.H. (Keep Rising Up So High), five guys from the area that discovered each other in High School. We were pretty popular and gained some celebrity in Central Florida. But after about three years, we broke up for the usual reasons groups break up, everyone wanted to pursue their own artistic vision. Then I hooked up with my man Spencer D and we became Male R&B duo X2 (Times2). We showed a lot of promise but that lasted for about a year and half. After that, I took some time off to regroup and think about what I wanted from music. So after a couple months, I decided to return to the studio to test myself as a soloist and I recorded my first solo track ‘Get At Me’. From that moment I knew being a Solo Artist was the best decision for my musical career.

3. AMS: Being a singer, songwriter, producer and independent artist, which part do you enjoy most? And why?

T.Sams: I enjoy the whole creative process of being an Artist, but I have to admit being on stage in front of an audience is what I look forward to the most. I love performing, I really don’t think you can fully describe the feeling you have when you’re in front of an audience. It’s such a rush it’s awesome. Being onstage is my opportunity to show my fans my appreciation for the support and love they’ve given me.

4. AMS: It takes a lot of determination, patience, time and investment to do an album. Could you share with us your album making process and any difficulty you encountered?

T.Sams: Yeah, this project took me almost two years to complete. I spent most of the time in the studio working with my writing partner, Russell Odum, and my producers trying to get the best synergy of music. The most difficult part of putting this album together was selecting the tracks. I recorded about twenty tracks and I love every single one, it was really hard narrowing it down to just the ten that’s on the album.

5. AMS: There are a lot of love songs and sexy jams in your CD. So how is your experience in love? And could you give your fan some advice?

T.Sams: There are a few sexy ballads on this album, because this is what I was feeling at the time. I’ve had good and bad experiences in the love department just like everyone else but I’ve tried to keep the experiences in prospective and not become bitter. Women are beautiful and love is great especially if you’ve found the right person to share it with.

As far as advise on love, I’m still learning, but my Dad always told me in love you have to learn the art of compromise.

6. A MS: How is your experience of being the main man of the label? Is there any advise you can give to those unsigned talented artists who also want to follow the same path as you did?

T.Sams: It’s a great honor to be a part of Xample Records, I partnered them because they shared my vision for my music and they believe in me. There is a lot pressure when not only are you trying to launch your career, you’re also trying to launch a label. I use this as a source of motivation knowing that my label has this much faith in me I have no choice but to be successful. I also like the fact that I am the first making the way to put us on the map. So far the relationship has been great, this works for me.
The advise I have is make sure you understand this is a very tough business, so make your decisions carefully. Choose the situations that’s best for you but make sure you’re part of a team that will stand behind you and give your project all the support it needs.

7. AMS: Your face is not shown on your CD front and back cover. Is it your intention to do so?

T.Sams: I wanted the album cover to make people curious. There are a few pictures inside the CD jacket or you can go to my website http://www.times2online.com for a lot more pictures, even register to win a T.Sams Poster.

8. AMS: Have you ever worked with some established artists/singers from the music scene? How was that experience?

T.Sams: I’ve had great experiences when I’ve had the opportunities to work with established acts. I’ve opened up for the Ying Yang Twins, Tank, Kingz One, Chingo Bling, Ruff Endz, Sunshine Anderson and a few others. When I was a part of K.R.U.S.H. we worked with Hank Williams on a Monday Night Football commercial. Every experience has been different because the styles and audiences were so diverse, it’s definitely something I look forward to doing more of.

9. AMS: Who is your biggest musical inspiration?

T.Sams: Oh man, I grew up listening to all kinds of music, gospel, rap, jazz you name it. I draw inspiration from everywhere. I like the emotional expression and delivery of Aretha Franklin, Johnny Gill, Fred Hammond, and John Pee Key, the harmony and dynamics of groups like Boyz II Men and New Edition. But I must say Michael Jackson has been my greatest influence. I think he is the consummate Artist/Entertainer, he has had so much to do with how we approach music today. I spent most of my childhood impersonating him, I even made a silver glove, I was Bad!

9. AMS: You are indeed very good looking and in good shape. Have you ever done any modeling? How is your exercise routine?

T.Sams: Thank you for the compliment. Yes I did some modeling and acting in college. It’s hard staying in shape especially when you’re on the road so much. My Personal Trainer, Fred Minis, travels with me so he tries to make sure I maintain a consistent workout regiment, I run about 3-4 miles a day, lift weights and do some self defense training. I love sports, so when I’m home I play basketball and football. I try to watch what I eat as much as possible but it can be hard since I love desserts so much. My Mom is always sending me cakes and sweets and it’s hard for me to resist Mama’s Red Velvet Cake.

10. AMS: What does the rest of 2004 hold for you?

T.Sams: Oh Man, for the rest of the year I have a pretty hectic schedule. I’ll be doing a lot of traveling to promote this album. So far I’m already scheduled to do a lot of appearances and performances throughout the Northeast and Midwest United States, we’re going to include some international performances as well. So keep looking for me I’m coming to your city soon.

11. AMS: Is there any special message you want to send to your fans?

T.Sams: No matter what path you, take believe in your dreams, be patient but persistent and know that success is usually the result of struggle. Make sure you have people around you that share your vision and will keep you focused and grounded.

Bio

Ask him why he sings, he says, “I had no choice, this is what I was born to do.” Born in Miami Florida, T.Sams has been surrounded by music his whole life. He says, “I grew up listening to a wide cross-section of music from R&B, hip-hop, jazz and gospel, my family was always involved with music in some way.” This environment influenced him so much, that as he says, “ I was hypnotized by music at an early age.” He often would persuade his father and brothers to take him to their rehearsals, where he imitated Michael Jackson, Johnny Gill and New Editions. He says, “The artist that influenced me most was Michael Jackson, but I’ve always liked the harmony and dynamics of groups”.

After High School, T.Sams enrolled in Central Florida College as an Education Major. After receiving his Associates Degree, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Camp LeJuene North Carolina where he met fellow ship mate Spencer D. The two began working together as the R&B duo X2 (Times2). “We worked really hard and made a lot of personal sacrifices, but the end results were worth it.” When X2 broke up in early 2002, T.Sams decided to continue pursuing music, this time as a soloist. He performed in clubs and concerts opening for several Artists across the US, including Sunshine Anderson, Tank, Ruff Endz the Ying Yang Twins to name a few.

T.Sams' first project smoothly blends song writing skills accentuated by sensuous scenarios with smooth vocals. This charismatic vocalist takes the listener on a stimulating ride, bringing a refreshingly new flavor to R&B/Soul.
