Community Co-op CD Sampler - Volume 1

This compilation is pure gold. Twelve tracks created by a collection of musicians that pool their resources to support each other. Solid, if not warped, from start to finish, Community Co-op is rounded out by acts like Aquamuffin, Effective Monday, Trucks Leaving and THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD....This is some of the most refreshing shit to come out of Toronto in a long time....Community Co-op is a great place to uncover a multitude of bands that truly come from the underground. - By Tim Melton

THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD
One String Band (TS Records)

THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD have been kicking around town in some form or another since 1996, and One String Band is their first proper album; what sets it apart from the band’s previous release, Rain Falls Down on Summer Trees, is that this album is an actual collection of songs, rather than soundscapes, jams and field recordings. As the band’s name indicates, (early 90s) Sonic Youth are an obvious influence, but THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD aren’t entirely Alternative Nation. The band has a unique spacey stoner rock sound with elements of punk, shoegazer, classic rock and, on closing ballad “Rest of My Life,” a little bit of folk. Though the eight tracks clock in at just over 52 minutes, the jamming surprisingly never seems excessively wanky, or even jammy. One String Band brings back the fond nostalgic feeling from the 90s that can be better found in dusty old 6-hour VHS recordings from City Limits back in the day rather than Much More Music’s Back In…

Bio

THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD makes epic rock for getting stoned, staying up all night with your best friend, spinning around until your legs fold under you, and skipping school the next day.

Formed in Toronto in 1996 by frontman Dov Tiefenbach and drummer Will Culbert when the two met in high school, THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD has since seen many great (and semi-great) players pass through its ranks. In fact, the band has become a spawning ground for a Community Co-op of local musicians, including Shawn Hewitt and the National Strike!, Trucks Leaving, Old Man Dog and The Unseen Guest.

Though obvious comparisons could be made between them and Sonic Youth, Pink Floyd and Radiohead, THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD would also hasten to aknowledge local heroes The Dinner is Ruined and passionate legends such as The Wailers as primary influences.

Whether gigging downtown (at Sneaky Dee's, El Mocambo, Rancho Relaxo, Silver Dollar and Holy Joe's, primarily) or recording at Dov's T.S. Studio, THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD strives to find new paths through the rock music jungle.
