"riding the Tune Buggy"

The scene at The Stone Church on Saturday morning wasn’t what you’d typically imagine. Instead of pints of Geary’s on the bar, there were juice boxes. Instead of the hum of adults chatting over cocktails, there was the sound of children laughing. And, instead of casually-dressed college students twirling around in front of the stage, kids in balloon hats danced and rolled around on the carpet.

Those were the sights and sounds of the first installment of the Newmarket club’s monthly Saturday Kid’s Show. This month’s show featured local kids’ rock band Tune Buggy. Each month, The Stone Church will host a different band whose music is geared toward children.

“Kids’ music drives me nuts,” said Sean McDaniel, a Tune Buggy fan and balloon twister extraordinaire. “I love this!” McDaniel was one of many parents there who proved that children’s music doesn’t have to be painful.

“If you show your kids what good music is, they’ll like it,” said Phil Kliger, guitarist and vocalist for Tune Buggy. “Parents are afraid to let their kids listen to the music that they like.”

Kliger, along with his fellow band members, shares the philosophy that children learn about music through their parents, and they’ll listen to whatever is offered them. Although much of the children’s music out there is not enjoyable to older ears, there’s no reason parents can’t like it, too.

“You’re never too old to rock,” said Sarah Wappler, guitarist for Tune Buggy. “Just because you have kids, doesn’t mean you have to stop.”

As The Church quickly became a playground full of balloon-sword wielding children, the bartender, who’s accustomed to serving their parents, prepared silver serving platters filled with grilled cheese sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and hot dogs, while making sure the bowl of chips was well stocked.

“It’s nice,” said bartender Tristan Law. “They get to see where Mommy and Daddy hang out.”

As the band played songs inspired by artists like Frank Zappa and Led Zeppelin, the kids danced and played in front of the stage, most of them singing along. The Lyrics, accompanied by rock riffs, went a little something like, “What do we bite? Food not people! Food not people!”

Tune Buggy is made up of New Hampshire Music Together teachers. According to its Web site, Music Together is “an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and the adults who love them.”

Jen Quinlivan, lead vocalist for Tune Buggy, said Music Together provides “a good precursor to music competence.” She said, “We teach the parents, and the children model the parents.”

As the afternoon’s festivities came to an end, Kliger yelled out to the crowd of mini rock fans, “You guys ever heard of Deep Purple?” The children reluctantly yelled out a myriad of excited and confused responses, from “No?” to “Yeeeeahs!” Overall, the afternoon’s events seemed to be very successful for both parents and children.

Tune Buggy is currently working on its second album. The band’s CDs are available at Treehouse Toys, G. Willikers, Bull Moose Music and www.cdbaby.com.
