Daniel Hantigk from the record label Chat Chapeau came to our rescue
with the following explanation:
“"Romano Chavo" translated directly would simply mean "Roma son" or
"Roma boy". The expression "chavo" is also used be Roma like "buddy"
or "mate". But you are right, said by a "Gadze" (non Roma) or someone
who is "ranked higher" within the quite complicated Roma family structure
(or someone who considers himself "higher") it could also have a mildly
insulting meaning.
“The song is actually playing with these double meanings. It is in fact a
parody. The main chorus line is a quote from a 60's German "Schlager"
sung by the back than quite famous singer Alexandra. This German
Super-Hit was named "Zigeunerjunge" (Gypsy Boy), telling of the
romance between a gypsy musician and a non-gypsy girl.
“Turlitawa Shutka are kind of simply retelling this story, but over painting
it - like in the beginning, the German verses tell about Gypsies around the
fire, fog drifting in, music and love are in the air, and so on... - so that
between the lines one can ready, well, it's not all that romantic being a
Roma. So the "Romano Chavo", the Gypsy Boy, Mustafa (the singer) is
singing about is actually himself.
“And with Mustafa originally coming from Shutka, Europe's largest Roma
settlement at the edge of Skopje in Macedonia, he undoubtedly knows
about the "not-so-romantic" parts of being Roma.
“The good thing about Turlitawa Shutka is that they are not going around
preaching the dark fate of the Roma but having a eye twinkling view on it,
almost with a comedian touch. Of course also with some dark humour from
time to time but also with quite some critical remarks on Roma society's
inside problems. Like "selling" brides or drunken husbands beating their
wives who have no chance to escape etc. Their upcoming album will
be quite interesting."

Mustafa Zekirov, Sänger, Schauspieler, Buzuki-Virtuose und Komponist stammt aus Shutka, einem hauptsächlich von Roma bewohnten Vorort der mazedonischen Hauptstadt Skopje. Mit seinem Partner, dem Multiinstrumentalisten Iwan Harlan, hat er Ende 2006 Turlitawa Shutka ins Leben gerufen. Ein Projekt, das sich vorgenommen hat Balkan- und Gypsy-Roots mit elektronischen Zutaten zu vermischen.
"Turlitawa" bedeutet "Mixtur", bzw. "Eintopf". Nach dem ersten, triumphalen Auftritt der Band bei der Geburtstagsparty von Funkhaus Europa im Mai 2007 in Mülheim, arbeiten Turlitawa Shutka an ihrem Debüt-Album. "Romano Chavo" ist neben "Zabrakadabra" der erste Geheimhit der Combo, eine Hommage an die Sängerin Alexandra, die Ende der 60er Jahre mit dem Lied "Zigeunerjunge” den Durchbruch schaffte.

Noise, Germazedonien,
Jetzt stehen die Gipsys unter Strom: Mit Turlitawa Shutka präsentieren der Singczigan Mustafa Zekirov und der "Beautiful Neuss"-Wizard Iwan Harlan aus Transgermanien einen Elektro-Ethno-Mix (Turlitawa = Mixtur, Eintopf), der jedem Emir Kusturica-Film Ehre machen würde. Aber anders als die Plattenleger-Innung von DJ Shantel, DJ Click etc. sind hier keine virtuosen Patchworker, sondern gestandene Neuzeit- Musikanten am Werk, um die traditionelle Balkan-Gipsy-Musik auf eine tanzbein-elektrisierende Art zu interpretieren. Die so geschaffene Groove-Akrobatik mit Mustafas herrlich schmeichelfrecher Gesangsdramatik, Iwans funkensprühenden Sounds & Beats und den von politisch bis absurd (ist das nicht dasselbe?) reichenden Texten macht sich jetzt auf den Weg aus dem Shutka (der größten Zigeuner-Enklave Europas, in der alles möglich scheint) in die Clubs der Gatschos (Non-Gipsys).
Der zu erwartende Erfolg wird dann nicht von ungefähr kommen: Denn die beiden Haupt-Protagonisten haben mit ihrer teils abenteuerlichen Vita jede Menge Erfahrung in den klingenden Knochen...
Mustafa Zekirov - Jahrgang 60 - der Lebenskünstler, Sänger, Schauspieler, Komponist etc. kommt aus besagtem Shutka, wo er unter bitterarmen Verhältnissen bei seiner Großmutter aufwuchs. Dennoch schaffte er es, sich - vor dem Kriegsdesaster - sein Philosophie-Studium in Skopje als Livemusiker zu finanzieren. Dann kam der Big-Balkan-Bang und Mustafa exilierte mit seiner Familie erst nach Helvetien und später nach Deutschland, wo er bald zum gefragten Roma- und Sinti-Bandleader avancierte. Und zum erfolgreichen Musiker/Schauspieler im einzigartigen Roma-Theater PRALIPE, für das er schon als 11-Jähriger in ehemalig Jugoland auf den Brettern stand. Später residierte PRALIPE dann (es gibt keine Zufälle!) im selben Gebäude wie das SoundToVision-Tonstudio und dort trifft er...
Iwan Harlan - Jahrgang 64 - ein Apfel, der nicht weit von einem gewaltig fruchtbaren Stamm gefallen ist: der Vater Komponist, der Großvater, der Onkel etcetera pp. Von Kindesbeinen an erhielt er so eine fundierte Allround-Ausbildung an Klavier, Gitarre, verschiedenstem Gebläse, Perkussion und Schlagzeug, sowie in klassischer Spiel- und Kompositionstechnik. (Ach ja, ein gesangliches Naturtalent ist er natürlich auch.) Dabei war Musik für ihn nie ein Hobby sondern schon immer begeisterte Leidenschaft und konsequente Berufung = Beruf. Als hochgeschätzter Producer, Composer und Instrumentalist betreibt er sein o.g. HighEnd-Studio und verbindet dort gekonnt seine traditionellen Musikkenntnisse mit zeitgemäßen Licks, Beats und Grooves.
Selbstverständlich ist der Gypsy-HotPot auch ein furioses Live-Ereignis. Eine hochkarätig besetzte Band mit

Now the Gypsies have gone electric: With Turlitawa Shutka, the “Singczigan” Mustafa Zekirov and the “beautiful noise Wizzard” Iwan Harlan from Transgermania present an Electro-Ethno-Mix (Turlitawa= Mix, Hotpot) which would do honour to any Emir Kusturica Movie. This not like the tricky needlework from DJ Shantel and DJ Click Gild, here you have avantgarde troubadours making an electrifying dance interpretation of traditional balkan gypsy music. These groove-acrobatics with Mustaf´s beautiful wooning cheeky voice-drama, Iwan´s spark showering sounds ´n´ beats and lyrics which stretch from politics to absurdity ( isn´t that the same thing anyway?) are making their way out of the Shutka (Europe´s biggest gypsy enclave, in which everything seems to be possible) and into the clubs of the gatschos (non-gypsies).
The success of the band will be no surprise for those who know the secrets, dizzy heights and frightening depths of the lives of......
Mustafa Zekirov - the lifestyle-artist, singer, actor, composer -born in 1960 and raised in very poor conditions by his grandmother in the (above mentioned) Shutka . Nevertheless he was able to finance his studies in philosophie at Skopje University by playing music in different bands as Koçani Orkertar (Emir Kusturica / Goran Bregovic), Esma Redzepova and Šaban Bajramovic. As the Big-Balkan-Bang went off, Mustafa and his family fled first to Switzerland and then to Germany where he very soon became a successful sinti and roma bandleader. He began working as an actor and musician with the one and only roma-theatre PRALIPE, which he knew already back Jugoland when he performed there as a boy age 11. Some time later Pralipe resided in the same building as SoundToVision where Mustafa was destined to meet........
Iwan Harlan born in 64 into totally musical surroundings, father a composer, grandfather, uncle etcetera. From early childhood he had piano lessons, learned to play the guitar and all kinds of wind instruments, percussion, and, of course, classical composition. Iwan was also a born singer and it’s no wonder that music became the core of his life. As a much-in-demand producer, composer and insrumentalist he runs SoundToVision, a HighEnd-Studio/Laboratory where a fascinating alchemy of traditional musical know-how and modern licks, beats and grooves takes place.
The formation - domiciled in the Ruhr district - was discovered by the World Music trendsetter and Funkhaus-Europe boss Francis Gay, who classified the song "Romano Chavo" immediately as a "hit" and invited the then virtually unknown band to play at the annual birthday celebration of Funkhaus Europe in Cologne. The sweeping success of the show proved the talent scout right once more and soon Radio Multikulti in Berlin was booking the live-quintett for their annual "Völkerball". This gig also caused enthusiasm - and Turlitawa Shutka stood their ground in front of the crucial Berlin audience.
