Bio

Thomas Walsh is the driving force behind Turlough. He has lived a rich and varied life born in Temple Bar, Dublin back in the day until the family moved to Ballyfermot. Learning a plethora of instruments including the tin whistle, accordion, clarinet and saxophone, he is a veteran of the showband scene. Getting involved in traditional circles, he played anywhere and everywhere and with everybody including The Furey Bros, Clannad, Paddy and John Keenan and Altan.

Somewhere along the way he began composing his own tunes and Inisheer and more came out. Lasairfhiona Ni Chonaola, Buttons & Bows, Cherish The Ladies, Danu and Shantalla to name but a few, can vouch for Inisheer and its soothing lilting qualities. This beautiful melody has been recorded and arranged by many people for a variety of instruments apart from the accordion, including the Harp, Tin Whistle, Guitar, Piano, Fiddle and more. Walsh's music has a pleasant sonorous quality, which makes it immediately accessible, and attractive. His approach is neither over produced nor excessively understated and he weaves a fine blend of composite musicianship and melodic articulation to create a unique and original sound.

Three years after his previous album, Ethnic Tears, Thomas Walsh releases his brand new album The Plassey on the Rocks. Again drawing on the inspiration of one of his favourite places Inisheer, Thomas has composed 11 new tunes, with the title track composed on a previous visit to the island. On this album he has also put Irish lyrics to his famous tune 'Inishere' and made it into a beautiful song.

Also featured on the album as well as Thomas own compositions are songs written by Martin Kellegher, David Yeates and Conall Larkin. David Yeates takes on vocal duties on his own composition New York for Paddy, Thomas' Inis Oirr and Martin's The Shores of America, while Conall sings his own composition, Cumhacht Na Greine, all accompanied by Thomas on the accordion.
