Musicians create Easter music

by KATHY NICOLETTI, Staff Writer

A song titled "Palm Street" written by two Beaches Christian musicians expresses the "euphoria of Palm Sunday and the horror of Good Friday," said songwriter Paul Pinkham.

Pinkham wrote the lyrics for "Palm Street" and Robert R. Stevens wrote the music. The two men are members of the Christian band Turning Point.

The song was inspired by a sermon given by Rev. Jerry Sweat at Beach United Methodist Church on Palm Sunday in 2004, said Pinkham.

As he listened to the sermon, Pinkham said that he was inspired to write the song.

"I wrote the first three verses during the sermon."

The lyrics express what it would have been like to have seen Jesus enter Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and then reflect back on that day after Jesus’ death, he said.

“When I heard the lyrics, T told Paul ‘this is a great song,’” said Stevens.

"Palm Street" and ''The Choice is Yours,"another song written by the two musicians, received Honorable Mentions in the God-Song Songwriting Competition in Virginia earlier this year, said Pinkham.

“Palm Street” is upbeat and “The Choice is Yours” is a power ballad, said Stevens.

"My hope for 'Palm Street' is that it will draw people into a closer relationship with the Lord Jesus," he said.

The music is “our way of being disciples for Christ,” said Stevens.

Stevens and Pinkham perform with Turning Point at the Friday evening worship service at BUMC for Celebrate Recovery, a faith-based recovery program.

Pinkham and Patti Tuttle are the vocalists for the band. Stevens plays guitar, Jim Woodey and Mike Mehaffey play the drums. Wade McGinty is on percussion, Kevin Dunn plays guitar and mandolin, and Susan Dunn is on bass.

Bio

Turning Point is a group of Christian musicians representing five different churches at the Jacksonville Beaches. Formed in 2005, they are primarily involved in ministry at Beach United Methodist Church in Jacksonville Beach.
Our music speaks of overcoming life’s struggles and the hope they have found through their faith in Jesus. They believe in sharing their own struggles in the hope that others can find the peace and joy they have experienced “at the foot of the cross.”
Our primary influences are Third Day, Switchfoot, Casting Crowns and Chris Tomlin. We are a mature band with significant life experiences that have shaped our music and ministry.
