Bio

The Turnips were originally formed by Ernie Tokay and Gene Smith when asked "so what's the bands name?" we looked at each other and Gene blurted "Ernie's Turnips!". So our first gig at the Bucks County Folk Festival in 1978 was played with Randy Hanson as "Ernie's Turnips." Following this we migrated to Sarasota Fla and worked with Terry Donato and Mark Rodgers at Electric Mountain Sound and had a standing gig there for a year or so! "We recorded on some crazy vintage gear and had a blast!" Says, Ernie Tokay of the experience! Another year or so later we teamed up with Cathy Keating and Roger Scudder. We played clubs and festivals from 81-84 or so and made several recordings of new songs like "Feel so good" and "Texas Bar Band" that we play to this day! Since then Gene and I played in a bunch of other bands..Gene was principal singer/songwriter and founding member of Boris Garcia and Buddha's Kitchen. Ernie and Gene collaborated on the 2002 Sunhill Down record and played in that band until Tom Hockenberry was tragically killed during the 2002 Philadelphia Folk Festival. After a couple of years layoff Gene and Ernie took to the studio again and began recording the 2010 Turnips record. Cathy Keating came back to help and Sarah Napolitan volunteered to sing as well. The result is a lavish production with some notables like Melody Allegra Berger, Mike Slo-Mo Brenner and Phil Nicolo of Studio4 doing the mixing and mastering. The Turnips are well booked for 2011 and primed for a wonderful summer. They've added a bunch of new originals and have begun "Turnips 2".
