"Soon you can say you knew Turn It Up! members when ..."

Local band picks up top producer, dis-Band TV gig

Gene Simmons likes to think he's a savvy businessman, with dozens of money-making projects on the go, including the relaunch of his record label. But he's behind the ball when it comes to finding new talent.

Turn It Up!, one of the Edmonton bands on Simmons' list of potential signees, is already working with another hitmaker -- Toronto producer Greig Nori. He used to front Treble Charger and then discovered Sum 41, who had a string of international hits (Fat Lip, In Too Deep) in the early '00s.

(OK, so he isn't quite as legendary as Simmons, but when's the last time the Demon wrote a smash single -- 1982?)

"Greig kinda found us on MySpace and he started talking to us," says Turn It Up!'s frontman Pat K, 21. "He's now our manager and will be co-producing our album. ... It's super exciting."

Still, Turn It Up! couldn't pass up the opportunity to play for Simmons during his two-day foray into Edmonton last month. "It was insane," says Pat K. "It was a surprise to us -- we didn't find out until the night before that we'd be playing the show."

A few weeks later, Turn It Up! packed up their belongings and moved to Toronto -- where they're about to work on their first album with Nori. A songwriting trip to Los Angeles is in the works.

"We're almost like white guys playing T-Pain songs," says Pat K, referring to the hip-hop/R&B star who loves to use AutoTune software to roboticize his voice.

Turn It Up! will also appear in an upcoming episode of MuchMusic's disBand, which puts an unsigned group through the paces of writing and recording a song, visiting label executives, then getting skewered (or praised) by a panel of judges.

Pat K and his pals shot the show last August, but he can't say too much before it airs -- he doesn't want to ruin the ending. (A broadcast date is still pending.)

"If anything, it's led to some pretty crazy opportunities," he says.

Don't remember their name, though. Turn It Up! -- who used to be Stand By Me -- are looking for a new moniker.

"Everybody hates Turn It Up!" sighs Pat K. "We wanted a simple name that thousands and thousands of people can chant, but no one likes it. We should start taking suggestions." - By Sandra Sperounes, The Edmonton JournalJanuary 26, 2009

Bio

The pop-perfect combination of sugary hooks and the heartfelt soul music of the 50’s and 60’s makes Turn It Up a lovable band for any crowd. The members dedicate themselves 100% to the touring/musical lifestyle and love nothing more. Having the experience of numerous North American tours in former bands, they have the right work-ethic to make their way to the top.

Already, without the release of an album the band has attracted industry attention and is certainly the group to look for in the near future. So bring your dancing shoes and don’t be late!
