“They’re from the deep south - of England! - but I’d swear these guys were another great alt country band from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.”
- Family Reunion Country (USA)
(translated) “A wonderful CD. Americana, yet with a European influence.”
- Drifter Country (The Netherlands)
(Translated) “Diversity here is celebrated. Old country next to folk rock, soul next to southern states blues. A real joy.”
- Das Klienicum (Germany)
“Quality, classic Americana music from the heart of London. Turnstile Junkpile sound as if they are the sons of Jackson Browne, brothers of Dawes, and cousins with the Punch Brothers.”
- Syncopated Sound (UK)
“A great blend of Americana and Southern rock. Stirring harmonies, twangy banjo, wicked good guitar riffs. Their debut album makes it clear this is a band on the rise.”
- Popa's Tunes (USA)
"Turnstile Junkpile have created a piece of real deal Americana. Recorded proof that retro can be progressive. Without any reservation this is a fine album.” - Fatea Magazine (UK)
“Excellent. Warm expressive lead vocals, tremendous harmonies, excellent writing, gorgeous steel guitar. If you are a fan of alt-country I can’t imagine you will be disappointed. Their future looks very bright.”
- American Roots UK
“The musicality is remarkable, the high-quality lyrics are provoking and a fascinating glimpse into a deep soul, the harmonies are tight, and style just right. This one will be on repeat for a long time to come.”

Bio
Turnstile Junkpile are a four-piece Americana outfit from London influenced by alt-country, sixties soul, southern twang, and all in music that is beautiful, and nasty, and dirty, and funky.
After getting together in 2010 or thereabouts they’ve played the London country and Americana scene, doing nights like Come Down and Meet the Folks, What’s Cookin’, Countrier Than Thou, Bonanza, Clerkenville West, the Glad, and Nashville Babylon.
In July 2012 they released their debut CD, Everything Is Cheaper Than It Looks.
From the country-fuelled Time is Running Out that opens it through to the swampy, sweatshop energy of the title track, this seven track mini-album quickly attracted great reviews in the UK, Europe and the US. Among them:
* MOJO magazine in the UK added it to their playlist of essential new releases in October 2012.
* “Excellent. Warm expressive lead vocals, tremendous harmonies, excellent writing, gorgeous steel guitar. Their future looks very bright.”- American Roots UK
* “Turnstile Junkpile have created a piece of real deal Americana. Recorded proof that retro can be progressive. Without any reservation this is a fine album”. - Fatea Magazine UK
* “The musicality is remarkable, the high-quality lyrics are provoking and a fascinating glimpse into a deep soul, the harmonies are tight, and style just right. This one will be on repeat for a long time to come.” - Independent Sky, USA
You’ll hear echoes of The Band, The Byrds and the Flying Burritos, but - as American Roots puts it - Turnstile Junkpile ‘are not copyists’.
The release of the record (yeah, they still think in vinyl) has seen Turnstile doing shows outside London in Brighton, Lewes and Winchester. Expect more shows further afield in 2013.
The line-up is Mat Clark (vocals & guitars), Ben Sumner (pedal steel, banjo, lap steel, vocals), Lawrence McNamara (bass & vocals), Tim Leadley (drums & vocals). The CD is self-released on the band’s own Requisite Nasty label.
