"Twelve Foot Ninja support Periphery & Tesseract"

The Hifi, a 1200 capacity venue, was forced to turn people away after about 8pm. Not a bad effort for a band (Periphery) on
their first headline tour of Australia.

Thus, when Melbourne’s very own genre benders Twelve Foot Ninja took to the stage with their reggae/dub/funk influenced metal at a very early 8pm, the Hifi was already three quarters full. Opening their set with the very heavy, very unique ‘Portrait #2,’ Twelve Foot Ninja instantly converted the entire room into fans – added to the relatively large pocket of people up the front belting out the lyrics to favourites ‘War,’ ‘Molotov Brother’ and ‘FEAR.’

By the time the synth intro to ‘Clarion’ roared through the PA, Twelve Foot Ninja were threatening to steal the show, making it clear that they are indeed a world class band. To quote a member of Periphery after the
gig, ˆTwelve Foot Ninja are basically one of the best live bands I have ever seen, “ and after that glowing endorsement, nothing more needs to be said other than I wholeheartedly agree with them.

"Smoke Bomb EP Review"

Db Magazine - Feb 25, 2011

True alternative hard rock is one of those genres that is very hard to do right and, despite having been around and kicking for well over two decades, is still only tentatively being explored. This has two effects; firstly, most bands who try to produce this sound don't do very well and, secondly, it leaves the field wide open for those few who do get it right do explore. Melbourne's Twelve Foot Ninja, with the release of their second EP 'Smoke Bomb' are proving that they get it and may soon start to gather a following akin to Karnivool or, in time, even Faith No More.

Listening to this EP, there are traces of so many different influences;
Incubus, Faith No More, Korn, Deftones, Karnivool, The Butterfly
Effect and who knows how many others. I'm not trying to say that
their music sounds derivative, quite the opposite. They have taken so
many different threads and woven a sound of their very own and it's
very good.

It's truly very hard to pick out a single fantastic track from this, as it is
uniformly well written and realized, recorded and the use of Howie
Weinberg, the New York based music tech, to master this EP has
really paid off. This is a great example of what an EP should be;
short, sharp and made up entirely of strong tracks. Closing track,
Manufacture Of Consent, would probably be the strongest track for
my money and it also features The Cat Empire's Ollie McGill on keys
and Mr Bungle's Bar McKinnon on saxophone.

Twelve Foot Ninja's 'Smoke Bomb' EP is a great example of a young
Australian metal band on the rise. This is definitely a band to keep an
eye on if you are interested in the future of alternative metal.

Bio

2014 has been a fruitful year for Twelve Foot Ninja, scooping up the ‘Best New Talent’ award at the prestigious Revolver Golden Gods Awards in Los Angeles – before winning over thousands of fans at Rock On The Range, Carolina Rebellion, Rocklahoma and West Coast radio conference Sunset Sessions Rock.

Twelve Foot Ninja
’s journey started with the release of EPs NEW DAWN (2008) and SMOKE BOMB (2010) – both of which gained the support of alternative radio in Australia and enabled them to build a small but dedicated following across Australia. The band then followed up these EPs with their debut album SILENT MACHINE
. Silent Machine was produced by guitarist Stevic, while the mixing process was a dual effort by the unlikely duo of Christian Scallan and Tetsuya ‘Ted’ Furuhashi. Final mastering took place in LA by the legendary Howie Weinberg (Deftones, Nirvana, Jeff Buckley, Muse). To accompany their debut album release, the band produced a world-class 72 page colour comic in collaboration with UK artist Keith Draws, as a way to deepen the experience of the album. In a rush to pre-order the band's debut album, fans crashed the Twelve Foot Ninja website. The debut album was released in the US October 2013 to stellar reviews by the most credible of heavy music press.

Twelve Foot Ninja are also known for creating world-class videos with unexpected plot twists. The videos for Mother Sky and Coming For You have a combined total of over 2.4 million views. Twelve Foot Ninja kicked off 2014 by premiering the long-awaited music video for the song “Ain’t That A Bitch.” Promising to create an action-packed and gory tale of retribution against an internet troll, the group was able to successfully raise over $45,000 to make the video using the crowd-funding website Pozible.com, breaking a world record for the most amount crowd funded for a stand-alone music video. To help the band bring their over-the-top vision to life, the band called on Penthouse Magazine “Pet” Madison Rhys, a seven-foot-tall Alaskan brown bear, and longtime supporters Periphery to make appearances in the video, as well as assistance from a prosthetics make-up artist who worked on the film The Hobbit.

On the live front, Twelve Foot Ninja were selected to support progressive metal juggernauts Periphery (US) and Tesseract (UK) in Australia – prompting the founder/guitarist of Periphery to profess, “Twelve Foot Ninja are basically one of the best live bands I have ever seen in my life. Holy f*** they are tight”. Fast forward- the band sold out all capital cities on their first national headline tour in January 2013 and backed it up later that year with the ‘Shuriken’ tour that saw audiences grow in intensity in Australia and surprise on the upside in the UK and Germany. The band’s first tour dates in Europe included a heaving, sold out headline show in London with most of the audience singing lyrics with the sort of familiarity previously only seen in their home city of Melbourne. The following night, Twelve Foot Ninja played the main stage at Euroblast Festival in Cologne, selling the most amount of merch of any band except the headliner, the godfathers of progressive metal, Meshuggah. In October-November 2013, Twelve Foot Ninja toured the US and Canada for the first time – opening for Periphery. The band attracted a lot of interest from metal and heavy rock tastemakers during that tour and were quickly scooped up and booked to perform some US festivals in 2014.

Twelve Foot Ninja’s debut album SILENT MACHINE was released in Europe and North America late 2013. Showcasing the group’s refreshing blend of metal with a turn-on-a-dime experimental side, Silent Machine crept into the Top 20 of CMJ’s Loud Rock music charts. Twelve Foot Ninja has also been championed by Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater/Avenged Sevenfold), Dino Cazares (Fear Factory), Misha Mansoor (Periphery), Chris Broderick (Megadeth), Wolf Van Halen (Van Halen/Tremonti) and Jose Mangin (Sirius XM).
