What Can I Say About The Band?

Twenty30 is definitely the type of alternative rockband that I want to emerge in this generation. The first time I heard the songs from their upcoming Ep, I’ve already knew they’re not just an ordinary band out there, that there is something great from this band. I love this band the way I love alternative rock music! I am wishing more for the success of Twenty30. I think the styles and music of Twenty30 is a mixture of bands like Urbandub, Chicosci, Sandwich and Kjwan here in Philly as in Philippines thats good thing it rhymes cause twenty30 are from Philly also but in Philadelphia. Self Produced/Recorded/Engineered/Mixed by Singer/Guitar Player Lyle Kelch Jr.
We made a point to make this the most personal and raw sounding E.P. possible. We had Lyle take the controls to really personalize our sound. We went with self-titled because in the three years we’ve been a band we feel this e.p. brings together our directions from old to new and thus demonstrates where we are going as a band.

1) Introduce Yourselves: Hello! We are Twenty30 from Philadelphia. Lyle plays rhythm guitar and sings, Nick plays keys adds percussion live and does backing vocals, Brian plays bass, Chris plays lead guitar, and Vinny plays drums.



2) How did you get your start? We all met in one way or another through different bands we were apart of in Philadelphia and surrounding areas. We got together to explore a new sound and all became great friends along the way.



3) -Who are some of your influences? We all have different influences however some bands that cross all our radars are: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Superchunk, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and Incubus



4) How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before? Alternative Punk Rocknroll with some hints of metal and indie

6) -Fav. song from your upcoming EP? Bands overall favorite is Back to Basics



7) Who is someone you would like to work with or play a show with in the future? We definitely consider every opportunity a blessing and appreciate any opportunity given to us, but mostly we love to play with our friends old and new alike, it makes for a better time! As far as another band we feel like we’d mesh well with would be Superchunk, they’re indie legends and new cd we all enjoyed.



8) What is something people may be surprised to find out about you? Our band name isn’t serious at all, its just a mix of our ages. Also most of all our songs sound angry but draw on positive reinforcement, meaning and thinking.



9) What is 1 thing you’d really like to see or do in your lifetime? Hard to say for all of us, but I know all of us would love to get back out west for a show or vacation one day!



10) What was your fav. tv show while growing up? Considering all of us grew up in different decades, there will be continual argument over this one! Trying to give consensus on this one is way too hard!

1) Introduce yourself:

Hello! We are Twenty30 from Philadelphia, pleasure to meet you it’s a real honor.

2) How did you come up with your stage name?

After many disagreements and quick band name changes we were in the studio recording our first album and as a last resort Lyle our singer/rhythm player said how about real serious (jokingly) and said what about our ages, as some are in our twenties and some thirties and finally it was settled.

3) What sets you apart from other aspiring artists?

What sets us apart is a real desire to make a family of our friends and fans, we all work full time and some of us are married so our time away from home and our spouses means we really want everyone to have a good time and hang out together including ourselves. Considering our free time is limited, it makes for a more memorable experience to play with bands we enjoy and are friends with and hang with people who all get along and want to party together! Too many bands just want to climb to the top of the charts, we make music we love and want to share with others.

4) What single or project are you currently pushing?

We are currently pushing our new self titled E.P. we finally feel like we really captured our live sound and put it to tape, we put everything we had into this and you can stream the whole thing on our website!

5) What is the philosophy by which you live by?

Have fun and keep your family and friends close to heart.

6) Which artists have inspired you to pursue music?

Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Brand New, Incubus, Superchunk

7) Who does most of the songwriting?

Lyrics are by Lyle, all music is a complete band effort.

8) What is your opinion of the current state of the music industry?

It is overly accessible now making it harder for original bands and a real fight to get peoples attention, but when the hard work pays off it makes the experience unforgettable and something to be proud of

9) If you could change one thing about the music industry what would it be and why?

People have really lost touch with albums as a whole, it is always better to judge by the whole product!



10) Are there any singers/ bands that you would like to collaborate with in the future?

Anyone who enjoys our music and wants to get to know us, bands come and go, friends can last forever!

12) What Is your favorite movie and favorite book?

Hard to say for all of us but I know we all enjoy Lord of the Rings and the books behind the series.

13) What is your favorite part of your live show? How has It evolved?

Finding ways to make it better is always fun for us, we continually strive to be better and make the experience more enjoyable for our fans. Our live show has evolved to be more interactive with our friends and to keep moving and keep peoples attention. We want to work hard for you and give you something to remember!

About two years ago a Philadelphia based band called Twenty30 submitted us an EP which sent a breath of nostalgia my way, reminding me of how much I used to love a band called Boy Hits Car, and partly, Brand New. It had a few killer tracks that stood out from the EP, but also a few questionable ones that dragged the disc down to an average rating, so much wiggle room was certainly there for the band to grow and improve from. "Looking Backwards EP" is their newest effort, and I'm happy to report that they've improved in more or less every department, playing to the strengths of their previous EP while ironing out the wrinkly bits.

The first change you notice is the much improved production, which now sounds much fuller, with thicker guitars and a bass/drum combo that actually has some thump to it. Boy Hits Car influence is still audibly there, but you can tell that the band is starting to forge more of an identity, evident in the almost complete absence of Brand New styled material on the disc. The songwriting has also improved; the first two tracks focus on a quiet/loud dynamic that explodes through the restrained passion of vocalist Lyle, whose croons dwell right in between a scream and angry cleans to make them effective. Now, I don't remember hearing any keyboard on their debut, but a quirky circus/saloon styled passage is audible on the background of "Why Be Something", which should quickly remind you of La Folie or even Foxy Shazam on their respective debut albums. Just the keyboard though, bear in mind.

Next cut, "Absent Minded", is different, integrating an element of punk rock to their alternative rock platform, which lends itself to lots of Incubus-style guitar experimentation with pedals. In fact, from here onwards, you're treated to an old school Incubus vibe that feels like a lost record somewhere between "S.C.I.E.N.C.E" and "Make Yourself". The best track on the EP, "Fire Away", actually sounds just like a track from that era, except a little more angry, just like "Bail Me Out" which as a number of explosive moments that separates Twenty30 from the much loved Incubus sound.

"Absent Minded" - energetic track that integrates an element of punk rock to the alternative rock platform, lots of Incubus-style guitar experimentation with pedals etc, old school Incubus vibe in this track. The parallel is fortified further on "Fire Away" which sounds like a "Make Yourself"/"Morning View"-era Incubus track except a little more angry, especially when the song explodes into halfway screaming. "Bail Me Out" follows suit, but after hearing three tracks of Incubus-resemblance, I have to conclude that the band is far better off when playing the subtly aggressive style made famous by Boy Hits Car, especially after hearing the restrained aggression of "Chaos Continuum" as the final track of the EP.

Well, that became long, but summa summarum: Twenty30 have improved in songwriting to such a degree that I'm willing to consider them for the slightly higher ratings in our scale. The songs have more substance and feel like individual entities that have been thoroughly worked on and tweaked multiple times this time around. That said, the production is still what it is for a self-releasing band, and a proper recording studio and a producer would do each of these songs wonders. Looking forward to the next release already.

Local Band Twenty30 Ready to Rock the Red Stallion
The five-piece group knows what it takes to put on a memorable show.

When a new band first gets together, the members have one major decision to make, and it usually isn't an easy one. Do they become a cover band, or do they stick to writing original music?

For the guys in Twenty30, the choice to play their own songs ended up being quite simple.

"Cover bands can make a lot of money," said frontman and guitarist Lyle Kelch Jr. "But we didn't want to do this for the money. We want to play our own music and find our audience that way."

The group formed in 2008 when Kelch, bassist Brian Herron, lead guitarist Chris Savidge and drummer Vinny Feliciano left their own bands to come together. Keyboardist Nick Rieders was added shortly after the release of Twenty30's debut EP Departure in July 2008.

"(Nick) added that extra atmosphere to the sound," said Kelch. "We had him come up and play one song during a show, and we really liked what he did."

Local music lovers can get taste of what critics on PhillyRockBlog.com and Philly Music Review have been raving about when Twenty30 hits the stage at the Red Stallion tonight. The show, starting at 9 p.m., also features bands Ghosts of Eden, Stolen Gypsy Satellite and Bamboo House.

"We put the show together, so we'll be on last," said Kelch. "It gives us a little more time to play than if we joined someone else's show."

As far as live shows go, Twenty30's calendar isn't busting out with dates. The band played some regional tours over the summer, traveling as far as New Hampshire and around the East Coast. The next show is Sept. 22 at the Legendary Dobbs in Philadelphia, then Dec. 17 at John and Peter's Place in New Hope. The light schedule was also a conscious decision made in the band's infancy.

"We could give everything up and tour ourselves into the ground and make a lot of money that way," said Kelch, recently married and living in Hatboro. "But we have other things going on in our lives. We have families and day jobs that are a little more stable. Like I said, we're not in this for the money."

The band's sound has been compared to punk/rock acts like the Deftones and Stone Temple Pilots. While Kelch writes most of the music, he stresses that it is a completely collaborative effort.

"Some of the guys have been playing for 25-30 years, where I've only been into the music for 15 years," said Kelch. "I might bring a beginning riff for a song, and then we'll all arrange around it, leaving spots open for more interpretations."

Kelch acknowledges the angry, fast and hard-hitting feel of songs like "Live it Up, Give it Up" and "Say It Like You Mean It" but points out how they end with a positive message.

"I start out with these negative images," said Kelch, "but as the song progresses, you can hear the mindset changing and turning into something positive." - Warminster Patch

Departure opens with Pay No Attention, a boisterous rocker with two vocalists (one singer, one screamer). It's a surprisingly tuneful song with decent commercial potential. Departure sounds a lot like stuff from other bands you might hear on The Edge or other Modern Rock formats, but there is this underlying Spacehog feel to Twenty30 that saves them from sounding formulaic. This becomes clearer on Wait Don't Wait, which is built on some impressive pop hooks and the sort of bombast Spacehog was so good at. Say It Like You Mean It has a pop/thrash style to it that is very accessible but also likely to appeal to fans of hard core music. Choke is a mellow tune that really outlines the Spacehog comparison on Departure. ...
Giving Everything returns to the power chord format that Twenty30 seems so well versed in...
Departure closes out the set; it's a big guitar-driven tune with memorable hooks and a driving rhythm that make it very memorable.

Twenty30 shows a penchant for pop hooks in hard/modern rock arrangements that are intriguing. Their sound is just a bit rough, which works as a DIY punk/Modern rock band. ... and the music is a good solid Rock N Roll EP.

"It is Foo's pleasure to cook this one up for you nice and spicy!! Twenty30 is a rock outfit from Philly, PA. But, there's always a little punk feeling associated with much of the Philly sound and this band rings true. But, don't let that scare you if you have an aversion to punk - there's plenty of rock here to satisfy. In fact, it's not a sound that's easy to capture, mixing punk so smoothly with Rock and vice-versa is not something that done easily. The blend of genres is present on almost every song, except for the downbeat "Choke" which is a bit more a ballad and features guest performer Karl Rieders. In contrast, the single off their Departure EP release, "SayItLikeYouMeanIt" is Foo's favorite so far.

So, that being said, let's jump into the wok with that song and find out what makes it cook.

This four piece (perhaps 5) shows a certain level of dynamics that are seldom heard with genres such as punk and rock. This songs got a great energizing drum intro followed by vocals that start with the soft personal touch. But, meanwhile the guitar chunks in with some great rhythms that elude to the energy to come. And when it does it gets loud and full of emotion. Somewhere between a few minor chords in the chorus and the "come down with me" lyric, Foo gets a great mix of Dinosaur Jr. and Minor Threat. Excellent! - (two of Foo's Favs).

As we turn to the physical audio of this already tight unit...The audio is hot and mixed fairly well. There's a feeling that this recording was made in the hybrid studio/live methodology. Which is good...the punk sound has always been home made...

Anyways, Foo thinks that this band is off to a great start and sees many fans in their future.

“Departure”

Twenty30 have the chops to make music that far exceeds the limit of what was recorded on this EP. They have a real knack for writing infectious guitar riffs backed by a classic rock sense of swagger. There’s a variety in tempo and tone too, something many young rock bands can’t to seem to grasp... It would be interesting to see what Twenty30 could do with a nice meaty production to compliment their catchy grooves.

In this recent feature spotlight with the band, our Webzine gets the 411 on what's happening in the world of Twenty30.

Isaac: How do you sum up 2008 for Twenty30?

Twenty30: 2008 in many ways was a year of artistic and personal growth for the band. We came into our roles in many ways. Having all been in previous bands we had to re-establish a trust and new clear vision for what we wanted as a band and from one another. We got off our feet and began to meet some great new people in the process!

Isaac: What do you feel was the band's biggest accomplishment for 2008?

Twenty30: The biggest accomplishment in 2008 for Twenty30 was recording the Departure E.P. It really set the groundwork for everything else. We cut it live after a few months of writing and it helped us solidify our name and acquire new fans. It put everything else into motion.

Isaac: Describe the music scene in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Twenty30: Philadelphia has this music scene that is incredibly versatile and filled with amazing talent. It goes comparatively unnoticed, it feels like, as compared to a lot of other cities but that in itself has advantages. Because Philly is tough it makes bands work that much harder to get themselves out there. So many bands work so hard and you've really got to prove yourself in this town. When you do the Philly fans are loyal beyond belief and when you make that connection with them, it's super strong. Personally we can't thank our fans enough for what they do for us!

Isaac: Elaborate on the concept behind Twenty30.

Twenty30: The concept behind us isn't too difficult. We really just want to make a new straightforward take on rock n roll.

Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music industry and why?

Twenty30: We all have different influences: Lyle is heavily influenced by Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and a lot of modern rock because of the whole in your face type sound, Vinny by Black Sabbath, early metal and Led Zeppelin because of the heavy technical drumming and intense speed, Chris by Grateful Dead and various early punk and indie bands because of the varieties in sound and complexity, and Brian by Metallica, Slipknot, Les Claypool and all over the map because of the grooves and technicality.

Isaac: Let's talk about what you feel you will bring to the music industry?

Twenty30: We feel that we bring to the table a new kind of straightforward clean rock energy, we're not trying to be too experimental or too specific either.

Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?

Twenty30: It's hard for us to pin down one artist that we'd all like to work with. We all disagree we each other on so many different amazing bands that it'd never work!

Isaac: How would you describe your music to others?

Twenty30: We describe our music as alternative punk rock. We like to combine all three of those genres.

Isaac: What is your definition for Rock Music?

Twenty30: Music that moves you!

Isaac: What type of feedback have your received from your debut recording, Departure, which was released in July 2008?

Twenty30: Departure has offered us many different looks into what people like about us and what they think we need to emphasize. We've been told things such as: we are a new modern take on classic rock, we are new form of alternative punk in vein of Spachog, Foo Fighters, Brand New, and we have the ability to demonstrate huge growth. Overall most positive feedback came from the song SayitLikeyouMeanit. We take in closely what our fans relay to us and overwhelmingly they've expressed how much they like the variety in us and our ability to bring it all together on one E.P.

Isaac: What can fans expect from your latest CD, you are working on currently? What is the inspiration behind the CD?

Twenty30: With the addition of Nick on keys permanently, our fans can expect a fuller and more spacious sound. We solidified our roles and know how to work more cohesively as a unit. Expect more technicalities in all areas and a much more unified practiced form of songwriting.

The inspiration behind the CD is the past time period in our lives and how it shaped who we are and what's to come. Both personal growth and frustration are everyday things for people and we are no stranger to that. We really wanted to bring that message to life through a somewhat darker more spaced sound.

Philadelphia punk/rock band, Twenty30 got ready for take-off when they released their first EP, Departure in July 2008. Since then, they’ve been steadily ascending in Philly’s Indie music scene.

Departure kicks off with an intense blend of instrumental and surround-sound effects that makes up the intro of the first track, “Payno ATTENTION” (and this would be about the point when the pilot turns on the “Fasten Seatbelt” sign.) We, the listeners are then launched into a musical ride jam-packed with ups and downs, twists and turns, and an all-around rocky experience with Vinny, Brian and Nick pushing their talents to the limit.

With tracks like “WaitDon’tWait” and “Choke,” it’s obvious that lead singer, Lyle really feels what he’s singing. The emotion in his voice is gripping, as it fluctuates between numbness, sadness and anger. Then, just when you think you know what Twenty30 is all about, “SayitLikeYouMeanit” and “Giving Everything” hit your speakers and, all of a sudden, you realize you don’t know shit.

Departure ends with a self titled track, with a more light hearted/fun sound to it that kind of reminds me of the music they play after a semi-traumatic thrill ride… almost like the soundtrack to climbing out of your seat at the end of Space Mountain. You’re almost in a state of shock, but it makes you wanna go again.

Like I said, Twenty30 is certainly on the rise in Philadelphia, which isn’t easy to do these days with bands like mewithoutYOU, MAN MAN, and East Hundred topping the Indie charts. But with a popular, high energy EP already under their belt, we can look forward to the upcoming release of Looking Backward in July 2010. So… for all you musical thrill-seekers out there, feel free to jump back in line for the ride!

“Looking Backwards” by Twenty 30

Twenty30’s sound rests on a foundation built by bands like the Deftones and Stone Temple Pilots with a subtle punk rock edge. Lyle, the singer and obviously the glue of the band, has a tonality and energy reminiscent of John Feldmann from Goldfinger -- especially on the heavier songs. He sings like his voice has a distortion pedal; the clean channel soothing and inspiring, the distorted channel aggressive and turned up to 11. An excellent rhythm section supports him, and this lethal combination might just be the band’s key to success.

Looking Backwards is a live recording of 6 killer tracks. It’s refreshing to hear a studio-quality recording without the use of Auto-tune and a gazillion overdubs. If this is the way they perform in the studio, I definitely want to see them live. My only negative comment is that I can’t hear the keyboard/organ. I know he’s there, but I rarely hear him.

Twenty 30 delivers with their Departure EP on the very first track “Pay No Attention”. It’s everything you expect from a rock band; booming vocals and a guitar driven instrumental solo which provides for a great intro. The band, comprised of five members, seems to have found a delicate balance in tempo and angry energy along with memorable songwriting, which sets them apart from other young rock bands on the scene. Their EP is a hit, especially the closing track “Departure” which is one their best. It is an honest display of DIY restless rock n roll alternating between even vocals to the scratchy screaming while the guitar propels the song.

The track “Given Everything” is an appropriate moniker for exactly what the band managed to do with the song, which has already been added to my favorite playlist on my iPod. This isn’t a band that simply serves as a space filler for a venue, managing to sound good after the audience has had a few drinks; this is a band that you go out specifically to hear perform songs like this.

Twenty 30’s sound has definite punk rock influences with the occasional touch of pop but the classic rock feel on this recording is hard to miss. As with any “up and coming” band there’s room to tighten up a few riffs here and there, but their rough feel and raw accessibility works for them. Twenty 30 has a range that gives them plenty of room to work with and they definitely hit their stride with Departure.
