"KIAC HITLINE"

KIAC HITLINE REVIEWS # Now showing:
20 Pound Shovel
I'm Not Sorry

Positive Punk with a stabbing message and and a defiant theme which is perfectly portrayed by the vocal. This is a 'cut above' in terms of composition and performance, plus amazingly catchy (I wish there was a better word sometomes) - JAWZ

"Nerve Magazine"

20 Pound Shovel
The Act Your Age EP
Independent
The 20 Pound Shovel boys are growing up, and though the lyrics are the usual boy/girl stuff, The Act Your Age EP shows a more mature side to the band. That said, this is too mainstream for my taste and I can’t handle keyboards. Think Blink 181 or Sum 41. But the kids in 20 Pound Shovel don’t need my acclaim and they didn’t make this CD for grouchy old curmudgeons; if they hang in there, I’m sure they’ll need real shovels to scoop up all the money they’ll make.

"20 Pound Shovel CD Release Review"

Ryan Settee at Backstagewinnipeg.com writes,
"it really IS about the kids. And they loved the band, but it wasn't hard to see why--lots of catchy pop-punk choruses, good energy, and an underlying spirit of connecting with each and every one of the fans there, most of whom were up front and standing and cheering enthusiastically"

"KIAC Radio TOP 50"

20 Pound Shovel
Take It Back
Off the starting blocks like a bullet, then it's a sprint to the finish with guitars blazing, drums hammering and the boys flying along but never missing one breath of lyric. The song will have an action replay in your brain but the photo finish will always show that these melodic Punk rockers won by a mile - JAWZ added to station 9/29/2007 5:42:36 AM

"EP "ACT YOUR AGE""

20 POUND SHOVEL

The Act Your Age EP

Independent

Sun Rating: 3 1/2 out of 5

Another EP, this one courtesy of Ste. Anne trio 20 Pound Shovel, who traffic in the same brand of mall-friendly punk-pop as Simple Plan and Sum 41. The boys already have a full-length under their belt, which might explain how it is this mini-offering sounds so polished. Certainly any of the five tracks on display here would be worthy of inclusion on the band's sophomore outing, which might provide an even better showcase for such gems as Where's the Love (in which the guys pine for a girl who's taken up with an uncaring oaf), All Night (which features some especially tight harmonies) and I'm Not Sorry, buoyed by a brattily catchy chorus. Couple those with the accomplished vocals of brothers Jay and Matt Voth -- plus chunky instrumentation from all three players (let's not forget guitarist Luc Clement) -- and you've got a disc with just one major flaw: The fact that there isn't more of it.

Bio

Out of a Winnipeg suburb comes three young people with a penchant for melody and fun. 20 Pound Shovel is here to remind people that music isn't about hardcore cliche and bad relationships. 20 Pound Shovel formed in 2003 in a garage located in Sainte Anne Manitoba where they crafted catchy pop songs for over a year before heading to Michael Daher (Pushing Daisies, Floor Thirteen) to record their demo. The product was a fast paced 13 song blasted with catchy guitar hooks and vocal melodies. The demo was recorded in two days for $100 recalls frontman Jay Voth. "We had no money, he just did it out of complete faith in us." After a string of shows sponsored my Teens Against Drunk Driving and Mitch Dorge (Crash Test Dummies) 20 Pound Shovel landed a deal with local imprint Criminal Records. In 2005 Criminal Records released "A New Beginning". "We wanted to do things our own way and not have someone telling us what to do with our music" says Jay, who single handedly wrote all the songs on "A New Beginning" except for the notable ballad "Puzzle Of Your Life" in which Matt Voth wrote and composed. In the summer of 2006, 20 Pound Shovel took time off to write and demo brand new songs. After a summer of writing and practicing they went back to Michael Daher to produce what is the high anticipated follow up "The Act Your Age EP". The EP came out September 2007 and was reveived with rave reviews!
