In incredibly intimate surroundings, it was hard not to realise that you were a part of something pretty damn special, and selfishly I was glad there were no more people to share it with because it may not have been the case otherwise.

Tonight, you could hear a pin drop within the audience, and on the rare occasions where someone other than Ryan Smith could be heard, glares of death were darted towards offending members of the crowd (one of which was unfortunately standing directly behind me).

Despite the absence of their drummer due to unforeseen circumstances, the sound didn’t seem to suffer at all. In fact, there were times when I had to keep reminding myself that they were ‘going without’ tonight, which led me to imagine if it was possible this band could sound any more epic.

Frontman Ryan Smith (The Silent League) charmed the audience in between songs and matched with the voice of Gretta Cohn (ex-Cursive), the sound was nothing less than spectacular. Cohn’s electric cello added to this more depth and a haunting element as she used the instrument to depict shattering glass in one of the songs.

The influence of Kelly Pratt (Arcade Fire) was particularly apparent in “Pirate Song” with its crashing drums (the only percussion we had all evening) and chanting, whilst a more ‘delicate’ side was shown in forthcoming single “Like You A Lot”.

This side to Twin Thousands, I believe is what made them all the more enchanting as you could see that Ryan Smith believed in every single word he was singing.

Amazingly, Twin Thousands are unsigned and although it’s only a matter of time before they’re snapped up and everybody’s hot on their toes to see them (because they really are that good), I’m quite happy for them to be my dreamy little secret.
