Live Review | Twin Voices

twinvoices

Some connections never truly fade. Left untended and bare, you may assume they lie dormant or dead. Without guard or giving, some connections mature from the point at which you left, growing and gathering, producing fruit of their own, ripe for harvest.

Nostalgia abound, Twin Voices live and up-close, local brew and tea, dimmed café lights and a collection of wide-eyed watchers… This is a live review.

It had been a full ten-spot of years since I had seen Laura Beach, the one beating heart and soul of Twin Voices, and hearing her perform on stage was something seemingly a bit more than messianic. Chatter was abound during the first act of the night, but like a group of hipster shushers, all voices dropped, all eyes turned and dilated when Laura took to the stage.

Filling the room with the crafted words of a singer-songwriter, and the folky, swirling sounds of a Cocorosie/Andrew Bird hybrid, the enchantment was entirely palpable. She commanded attention while bleeding humility, captivated without asking and performed with an old and wizened spirit borne from previous lives of clever coarseness and courageous curiosity.

Now… for a little foundation…. Twin Voices, was until a short while ago, the collective effort of Laura and her brother Simon who produced a harmony which could only come from two individuals who share just a bit more DNA than you and I. Their dynamic was tight and their bite was big – if not just a nibble on your ears. For the last little while, however, Laura has turned the project into a bewitching display of symmetry and skill. Layering sounds of guitar, violin and voice, Laura presents a performance which is immediately intriguing.

Laura’s performances come with my highest recommendation and we at IMN are incredibly honoured to have her perform at IMN’s inaugural show in a planned concert series for all Ottawa indie music lovers. The show happens on Jan.17th at the Mercury Lounge and will undoubtedly be a landmark event for all involved.

Bio

Classically trained on violin, Laura Beach set aside the instrument for a while to pick up the guitar and begun writing beautiful, lyrical folk songs. Then came a series of musical projects - from folk to rock to electro-pop - and finally, Twin Voices. What began as a return to her roots in acoustic folk music has morphed into a driving, dynamic sound composed of multi-layered instrumentals and haunting, soaring vocal lines.
