"As of now I bet you got me wrong." -Layne Staley
For a couple of young high-school kids, these words opened up a world of music and self-reflection. Brad Pearce and Brandon Howell first started playing guitar together in the fall of 2000. Listening mostly to Alice In Chains, and enduring long hours in Brad’s hellaciously hot attic, they went from fumbling through some simplistic barre chord changes to accomplishing incredible vocal harmonizations and song-writing achievements.
The first gig Brad and Brandon performed for friends and family was at a local coffee shop in the fall of 2001. Socks were rocked, right off. Layne Staley’s death was ironically announced on April 20th, 2002, Brandon’s birthday. The name “Two Layne Highway” was used to honor him at a following gig and just seemed to stick. In their senior year of highschool, the boys played more frequently around the Rocky Mount area, even performing at the annual "Down East Festival".
Sadly, it came time for college days, and both Brad and Brandon parted ways. Brad left for Appalachian State and Brandon for UNC-Chapel Hill. All 13 fans were devastated. The dream continued, however, over school breaks and a lot of music has been penned and performed since.
Bradley Proctor, a lifelong friend, joined the duo in the summer of 2004 to play the drums. Good times ensued. To this day, it seems he can't stop pulling new tricks from his sleeves with his unique way of approaching percussion.
Shane Chaffin soon got jealous of all the fun they seemed to be having and decided to learn how to play the bass, switching from his usual love of the six string. He has since upgraded to ten.
The band has performed several times at local hotspots including Via Cappacino, Las Lomas (now called "I Like this Bar 2"), Great Day Cafe, the always awesome Java Mott's, and many, many private party throwdowns.
