Twon Mai

It is possible in the midst of a growing crowd that someone as reserved as Twon Mai could command an audience. He came in to Cohiba quietly without a single soul knowing he was there.

Twon's words to me were very simple asking a few questions about how many breaks to take and what musicians usually do when they perform here. Twon with a bit of nervousness said "This place is really cool, I have never performed outside of a venue like the coffee house crowd"

"Don't be nervous, I have heard your music and I must say that I am very eager to hear your performance live, I know you will do well. We are excited to have you here." I said as I smiled seeing him relax a bit. With a short sound check he was ready for the show to begin.

Cohiba is a challange and will show true strengths and weaknesses with your musical talents. The conversations continued throughout the crowds as usual with everyone comfortable in their chairs and cocktails in hand, expecting background music. "Breakthrough" was the first that Twon chose to play. The command of rhythmic accoustics emanating from his guitar stopped motion like a wave as everyone stopped to find out where the sound was coming from. There were whispers in each other's ears and smiles spreading acrossed quiet lips as Twon reached easily in his falsetto octaves when he hit the first chorus.

By the middle of his second set, it was standing room only. The trance extended past our doors to the roads to follow the sounds of Twon's music. So familiar were the melodies, it made you second guess if it was a cover or his originals.

To be seasoned as a musician against a bar crowd without ever having the experience shows true talent in it's purest form. As I looked up, I could truly see the passion pouring from his words that were talking tails from his soul.

Not only was Twon Mai a big success at his debut at Cohiba, it was a huge success in as a bar gig period. He brought the crowd to a reprieve so refreshing it was the capstone to the environment for the rest of the night.

Whispers of "Man this kid is good," "Where did he come from?" "His words seriously speak to me" were all around the room tonight. If you closed your eyes you could have easily set back in your chair and thought you were in a private concert with the likings of Coldplay, Jason Mraz and Matt Nathanson. To be able to perform live better than a CD will create great success in Twon Mai's career.

There was such a warmth that illuminated from Twon's songs and voice that changed the whole temperature and all time was lost. At 1am when he finished his set, everyone found themselves snapped out of a trance and asking "What time is it?" When I told them it was 1:30am the shock and disbelief that spread across their face said it all.

Great show Twon, we are proud to have you back regularly starting next Wednesday for ladie's night. This is just the beginning for your musical career.
