"Velocity Weekly, May 2005"

May 2005
By Angie Fenton

It's one thing to be called a two pump chump, but to brand your band with a name that conjures up images of the "minute man" that women vow to avoid and men pray not to become?

"It fits what we do, our style of music," said Brad Mattingly, 33-year-old lead guitarist of the Louisville band.

That's not to say the five fellas desire to be one-hit wonders — it's quite the opposite — but, and let's be honest here, does anyone really ever forget the frenetic fumbling of a lock-and-load lover?

Didn't think so.

"It's one of those names you just don't forget," said bassist Dave Bennett, 38. And that's exactly the intention.

Background

Mattingly and vocalist Scott Cook, 30, formed a two-man band in 1999 and, feeling rather unsatisfied, the duo grew into a group with the addition of Bennett; drummer Sean Saunders, 29; and guitarist Travis Mudd, 26.

Once formed, the band's only goal was to "play music and party," Saunders said.

"We're the male version of Bananarama," Cook added.

The crew has also made a name for itself by eliminating the irritating pretentiousness of modern day rockers with a bit of wit, a handful of bawdy humor and a desire to play hard and party harder. "We're all just hacks that pass as musicians," Bennett said.

Sound

Two Pump Chump's flavor is "pop metal punk," and the shows are wicked and wild.

Songwriter Cook's words are overwhelmingly honest and provide a fitting climax to the head-banging of his bandmates, made all the more infectious by Saunders' bad-ass beats.

"We don't mind bleeding for our art," Bennett said. One recent gig at the Rustic Frog in New Albany culminated with a mosh pit that killed Mudd's amp and dinged Bennett's bass. "That's rock and roll baby!!!" Bennett wrote on the band's website.

"Trailer Park Love" has rocked local radio, and the chumps have opened for '80s hair band Quiet Riot and played the Kentucky State Fair and the 2004 Mom's Music Festival.

With influences like Aerosmith, Elvis, AC/DC and Prince, it's no wonder the fellas named their debut album "Done in 60 Seconds" and their most recent "The Money Shot."

"It's sexual and suggestive, and we want to make money from it," Saunders said.

At the very least, Two Pump Chump wants to be unforgettable — for better or worse.

Outlook

The chumps will play from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday at Cozy Corner in Loretto, Ky., and on May 20 at Bearno's by the Bridge as part of a benefit for the family of slain Louisville Metro Police Officer Peter Grignon.

Two Pump Chump is at work on a new album, tentatively titled "Deep in the Shag/Unprotected." You can also check out the band's website at www.twopumpchump.com.

So where to go from here? Contrary to popular belief, the band is all about longevity...and spreading its songs to the masses.

"I'd rather be more famous than rich," Cook said.

Does infamous count? - Courier Journal

Two Pump Chump: "Too Drunk Too Die"

By Jason Ashcraft

Two Pump Chump recently shot a live taping for Artists International Independent Radio, streamed live at www.aiiradio.net Completely programmed from a studio basement in a house in south Louisville, for a few hours it seemed more like a venue on a Friday night. Some twenty or thirty people were packed in, eating, smoking, laughing and screaming for and at Two Pump Chump. Of course, Two Pump Chumpwas screaming right back at them as well.

Two Pump Chump has been a vital member of Louisville's original music scene for many years and they are long overdue for attention. Formed in 1999 "from 3 lesbians and a can of tuna-fish at a Billy Graham Crusade" (per twopumpchump.net), 2PC has built a fan base of redneck maniacs who are just as crazy as they are by playing all the major 502 venues, opening for a variety of national acts including Quite Riot and Black Stone Cherry plus playing music festivals like LRS Fest. They also have a full-length album, Deep in the Shag, the source of this story's headline and an audio biography of any given trailer park. It's a little unclear if they are glorifying the lifestyle or making a mockery of it, but whatever their intent was, it was done over a collaboration of massive amounts of cheap beer, funny cigarettes and, of course, a careful selection of actual life events, leading to lyrics for songs like "Trailer Park Love," "More Than a Lesbian," "Can't be Bought," "Underage Girls" and "Knocked Up Lisa."

The acoustic live webcast lacked none of their trademark enthusiasm for playing. It gave their drummer Sean a chance to walk around in the crowd saying "Good Game," while smacking them on their butts. They could really care less to whom or for how many people they are playing, because it's all about having fun while jamming out. There is usually some kind of horseplay going on with them before, during and after the show. The 'when' and the 'where' seem to be irrelevant, so long as they have cheap beer and an audience.

They used to have T-shirts that said, "You're either with Two Pump Chump or with the terrorists." If you can't find a reason to like these guys then you must be a terrorist - and I'm with Two Pump Chump. - Louisville Music News

Bio

Two Pump Chump started from 3 lesbians and a can of tuna-fish at a Billy Graham Crusade.
Current members are:
Dave Bennett (bass) formerly of BOTTOMS UP (a VILLAGE PEOPLE tribute band)
Brad Mattingly (lead guitar) formerly of AIR SUPPLY
Sean Saunders (drums) former towel-boy for the KENNY LOGGINS tribute band DOWN N' DIRTY
Scott Cook (lead singer) former backup singer for the band BANANARAMA and
Travis Mudd (rhythm and lead guitar) winner of the Justin Timberlake look alike contest.

In early 1999, Scott and Brad started a crusade to find the greatest party band ever.
It wasn't until late 2002 when they found Dave and Sean,
the four set out on a goal to be the greatest party rock band ever and to bang other guys girlfriends.
That became a reality with the addition of Travis.
Now TPC is playing almost every weekend and even on the weekdays.
No time for relationships, sorry girls.

Two Pump Chump is a regular on the Local Music Hour with Mudd on WTFX 93.1FM. They recently played high profile shows with the likes of National acts Three Days Grace, Head Automatica, Black Stone Cherry, and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

The band has also had recent write ups in local newspapers Velocity Weekly and Louisville Music News.

The new CD "Deep In the Shag" was finally finished in June, 2006.
It brings a new raw and "more mature" side of TPC,
all except for the song Underage Girls...
The collaboration everyone brought to this CD completes another chapter in the trailer park saga.
