80's Cover Band Debut Surprises Promoters - Venue Sold Out!

Review by Charles Crosby

The band, TWYCE SHY, lived up to all the hype last month and anyone who attended their debut at MJ's Grille and Tavern can attest to one thing - it was an "ear piercing" blast from the past. Lead guitarist, J.P. Marino, was overheard telling his sound man before the show "if they don't have blood coming out of their ears then it's not loud enough."

The five Southern Maine musicians: vocalist Mark Coururier (aka Rod Steele), guitarists, Darren Milliken (aka Dee Zul) and Jerry Perron (aka J.P. Marino), bassist Mike Terrell (aka Doc Terrell) and drummer Rick Lewis (aka Rycky Styx) arrived in a stretch limo all dolled up in 80's attire, big hair, and beautiful ladies. The air was filled with the "Rock of Love" (Brett Michaels (Poison, lead singer) VH1 Reality TV Show) hysteria and it was an unforgetable evening.

A half hour before the band was scheduled to go on the venue was already at capacity and a steady line spilled out onto Maine Street, Brunswick for more than two hours. It was estimated that more than 300 attended the concert before the evening was over. According to club owners it was one of the most successful nights ever.

The band played two monster sets and an encore which included songs from Poison, White Snake, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, AC/DC, Guns 'N Roses, KISS, and other 80's super groups. The band was nothing short of amazing with their near perfect renditions of cover songs from rock's most infamous bad boy groups. Rod Steele's vocals were dead-on, the rhythm section was powerful, and lead breaks were ear piercing and accurate down to the note. The band was so popular that they even sold out of all the TWYCE SHY apparel which include shirts and thongs.

TWYCE SHY is scheduled to play their second gig at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Brunswick on Saturday, May 24 at 9:30 p.m. Since so many were turned away from the debut more than half of the ten dollar tickets are already sold. If you want to purchase tickets they are available at The Music Center (Tontine Mall in Brunswick) or online at: www.themusiccenter.net.

According to band members they are currently writing their own material and will be going into the studio to record their first CD this fall. If you would like to get more information about the band TWYCE SHY visit their website: www.twyceshy.net.

"Press Release Rewriting History"

Rewriting history- It was one fateful night in the summer of 1987 when history would be forever changed. For it was on this night that flight US139 on route to Great Britain disappeared somewhere over the Atlantic. On board the plane was all five member and companions of the now infamous heavy metal band “Twyce Shy”. The band was scheduled to play the Monster’s of Rock concert at Castle Donnington; unfortunately the plane never reached its destination. Instead, it crashed on a deserted island and Twyce Shy was never heard from again until now… Last week the band was rescued when a group of men aboard a fishing vessel sailing close to the island, spotted what appeared to be a large recreation of Iron Maiden’s “Eddie”. “We weren’t trying to be rescued at this point, we just thought the statue would be cool to have on the island.” said guitarist DeeZul. The fishermen docked at the island to investigate and soon spotted the quintet. All members of the band were very happy to see their rescuers and get back to civilization. The only exception was Bassist Doc Terrell who was afraid he would be forced to shave the majestic mustache he had grown while marooned on the island. In a press conference yesterday a spokesperson for the band said, “The world has changed a lot in the last 20 plus years but Twyce Shy hasn’t. Living in isolation on a deserted island will do that.” When asked about the future of the band he went on to say, “To see these guys play today is like stepping back in time. They are going to be huge again very soon.” Plans are underway for a comeback tour scheduled to begin in April 2008. Anyone who never got the chance to see Twyce Shy in the 80’s, need not worry, because soon everyone will have the chance to see the exact same show. This is an act not to be missed. “Ready or not, we are bringing back hair band metal” said the always enthusiastic Rycky Styx, TS’s drummer. At press time, vocalist Rod Steele and guitarist JP Marino were unavailable for comment. Sources close to the band said of Steele and Marino, “someone told them that music no longer needs to be recorded on tape and we haven’t seen them since.” He added, “We expect they will be back by the first gig.” Be sure to check out Twyce Shy tearing down a town near you soon!! - Portland Phoenix

"Bringing back the '80s, hair and all"

Bringing back the '80s, hair and all

By James Mixon, Times Record Contributor — Special to Ticket

BRUNSWICK — Rock on, brothers and sisters! This Saturday, April 5 at 10 p.m., Twyce Shy, Maine's self-proclaimed best 1980s' hard rock cover band is appearing at MJ's Grille and Tavern on Maine Street. All '80s. All night.

JP Marino and Deezul on guitar, Ricky Sticks on drums, Doc on bass and Rod Steel on the mike with a unyielding vocal range and a blistering rock voice will arrive in full '80s' costume via limo to their premiere gig.

"We play all covers," explained Marino. "I'd seen a couple bands who had done it, and hadn't done it well, and people are cheering for it so I thought, if we can get a halfway decent band together ..."

But Twyce Shy isn't just halfway decent. These guys are tight and their covers sound convincingly authentic.

"We've all been playing for many years in different bands," said Marino. "So we thought we'd put this together."

And there isn't a weak link in the bunch. Having grown up in the 1980s, the guys want to do justice to their favorite bands, and if you check out their rendition of "The Boys Are Back in Town" on their Web site www.twyceshy.net, it becomes obvious they do just that.

"We're bringing you something you're not used to seeing in a club," explained Rod Steel. the band's humble singer whose calm, polite persona in no way hints at his scorching and powerful voice that he displays on stage. "Our shows gonna be so in your face you won't be able to talk to the person next to you — it's gonna be like a mini Civic Center on stage! he promised.

Fitting, as the band plays stadium, hard singing rock designed for big crowds and outdoor shows, and they're doing it well, without a slip up that could kill the illusion and make you remember you're not actually watching Ozzy or AC/DC.

But in the end it's all about putting on a good show, honoring the bands they cover, and having a blast.

"It's fun, that's the biggest thing. It's fun," said Marino, who said he grew up on that music and wants to do it justice. "It's meant to be fun, but if we don't play the music well it's not going to be fun," explained Deezul. "So we're taking it seriously and making sure we play the music well and it's fun for the audience as much as it's fun for us."

"I was told I look better in my get up," laughed Marino. The hair wigs and eyeliner are there. The tight ripped blue jeans, cowboy boots, bandanas and bracelets, everything one would expect from this kind of band. "It's my favorite kind of music. I never thought I'd be able to play it out," Deezul said.

What should people expect this Friday? Expect a singer that can blow the doors off Mj's and bring back the '80s. Expect a tight band to do justice to your favorite songs. Expect something you're not used to seeing in a club, a lot of stage presence, and a lot of hair.
