"Afropop Worldwide Review of Baron's "Golden Touch" (Chanzo Greenidge-Twylight Seven)"

The Baron (Timothy Watkins) is at the crossroads of the art form of Calypso. His music flows sweetly from Calypso to gilt-edged Soca in his latest production, The Golden Touch. A full-length offering from a consistent headline act in Trinidad and Tobago and its diaspora, The Golden Touch re-confirms Baron’s reputation as the pre-eminent Soca crooner, while extending his range musically in ways that fans of Tropical, Afro-pop and even Soul music are sure to enjoy. Perhaps the best way to describe Baron’s performances on this album is ‘skillfully evocative’. The listener is drawn to his ease in weaving signature melodies around well-orchestrated backing vocals, creative bass-lines and a driving calypso brass section. Watkins’ delivery matches with the facility of a Celia Cruz or a Juan Luis Guerra, and continues strong throughout, touching lightly on the varied stylings of fellow Soca legends such as Johnny King, Nelson and Blueboy/Superblue. - Afropop

"Afropop Worldwide Review of David Rudder's "Random Notes" (Chanzo Greenidge-Twylight Seven)"

This album is beautifully produced, very controlled and symmetrical in its use of the many aspects of Rudder’s approach to lyrics and sound. The title Random Notes would be completely ironic if not for the author’s eclectic choice of topics, each giving vent to a fully developed Pan-American/ Pan-African consciousness that keeps finding new ways to reconcile Soul, Gospel, Calypso, MPB, Pop and Blues, carrying the listener’s imagination to the realities and current events of Jamaica, the USA, his native Trinidad and Tobago and, in particular, the mountainous land of Haiti. - Afropop

Twylight Seven Shines Through With New Album Manila Sunrise

Fusion artist Twylight Seven is about to enjoy the spotlight he was been working toward with the release of his new album Manila Sunrise.

The 10 original tracks selected for Manila Sunrise have inspirations from around the world, and their sound is a compelling representation of those influences. Manila Sunrise is a sure bet to land Twylight Seven more recognition as an established artist.

Twylight Seven began developing his style of writing and composing, Cool Hop, after performances with all-acoustic Caribbean fusion outfit Terrenaissance. His musical contributions as a solo artiste include his debut EP Graf7iti Talk (2012) and his single Diamond Mind on WiFi PRs Indie Anthems Vol. 3 released in October 2013 at CMJ Music Marathon in New York.

Twylight Seven has worked with a number of different artists, producers and songwriters, including Bollywood music director Sneha Khanwalkar, Brazilian Capoeira legend and mentor, Mestre Bezerra and Filipino World Music diva Carol Bello.

Proof of the vast number of influences in his Cool Hop style lies in the lyrical content of Manila Sunrise, which is written in both English and Portuguese, with touches of Haitian Creole and Spanish. His poetic command of the two central languages shines through in this album. Each song is delivered beautifully and intimately, and Twylight even studied Russian during the recording of the album, using the new language to add nuances to his diction on various tracks.

He recorded and mixed the album exclusively with musician-producer Beebo, whose Hip-Hop and Reggae background contributed to the feel and organization of the record. This collaboration took place at Lions Den Studios in Trinidad and Tobago, the famous pyramid studio which draws its name from former owner and Calypso legend, the Roaring Lion.

The studio is a haven from emerging hip-hop and soca artists, making it the perfect backdrop for this unique albums coming into fruition. Mastering of the album took place at PKMastering in New York with the help of Phillip Klum whom he found while looking for the producer responsible for Bjrks Post, a favorite album.

To Thine Own Self Be Cool

Born in Toronto, his life and musical consciousness were in constant movement between North America and the Caribbean. His parents shared their love of Soul and Rhythm and Blues: Roberta Flack, Temptations, Smokey Robinson and Calypso, Reggae & Soca from around the Caribbean: Brigo, Kitchener, Black Starling, Beckett, Gabby, The Wailers, Superblue and David Rudder.

He writes and composes all of his songs in the tradition of Rapso, Calypso, Extempo (freestyle lyrical wars) & Soca in Trinidad. He started writing in the Calypso format at the age of 10 and as a teenager in Toronto began incorporating the music he grew up on - reggae, afro-latin, spirituals, dancehall, parranda, African drumming, Indian classical, chutney and filmi music- with the emerging influences of jazz, gospel, Hip Hop and alternative rock.

These influences and inspirations are still audible in Manila Sunrises original blend of hip-hop, jazz, soul, folk, Capoeira, MPB, blues, calypso, spoken word and his own niche genre, Cool Hop. Even the musicians who work with Twylight Seven have a hard time describing his sound without listing a slew of genres, and comparing him to other artists is even more difficult. His sound is truly different and connects the world of music, drawing comparisons to Nujabes, Tricky, Sussan Deyhim and Paul Simon. Some songs do point to inspirations of other artists, including Tracy Chapman, Gil Scott-Heron, Merchant, Sade and Djavan.

Cool Hop is Twylight Seven's signature style of music that he says comes from the experience of migration, and the diverse languages, rituals, traditions and cultures that make up his background. With Hip-Hop sensibilities in some of the spoken word lyrics and a soft, melodic backing sound, Cool Hop and Manila Sunrise stand to revolutionize fusion music as we know it.
