"Singing Sensation"

Senior Tyler Bernhardt poses for a portrait for his album, “What is This.” The album will be available on the Web on iTunes and Amazon around Thanksgiving. “What is This” was co-produced with UM alumnus Luke Moellman. Bernhardt was recently signed by the label Forward Motion Records, who is known for representing local Miami artists Arboles Libres and Dreaming In Stereo. Motion Records will help promote “What is This” online. Bernhardt sees his signing as “a step forward” and as an invitation into a “community of artists.” Bernhardt is currently preparing for his senior recital, which is the capstone of the jazz voice major. His recital will be at 8 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Frost School of Music’s Gusman Hall.

Bio

Tyler Bernhardt was born and raised in Fairfield, Connecticut. At an early age, he began teaching himself guitar, bass, piano, and drums, which led to a lifelong passion for music. In high school, he co-founded an a capella group called Close Harmony, a staple of Fairfield’s musical education system. Upon his high school graduation, Tyler released an original 5-song EP with fellow musician Darian Cunning.

In 2007, Tyler was offered a full scholarship to study Jazz Vocal Performance at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. There, Tyler became part of the prestigious Jazz Vocal Ensemble 1. In addition, he was recruited to the elite Downbeat award-winning jazz vocal group, Extensions.

In 2010, he signed with Forward Motion Records, a South Florida based indie-label, run by Dreaming In Stereo’s own Fernando Perdomo. A few months later, Tyler released a full-length album of original songs called “What Is This,” which he co-produced with classmate Luke Moellman. In 2011, Tyler’s song “Happiness In History” was awarded first place in the Indaba-Jango Airplay Opportunity contest.

Tyler’s original music blends elements of indie-pop, Americana, and rock into a genre all its own. He has performed at venues such as The Van Dyke, Transit Lounge, The Stage, The Acoustic Café, and The Quick Center. His music is available on iTunes, Amazon, and many other online retailers.
