Biography

Tyler Anthony Shea was born July 12th, 1984 and raised in the small town of Louisdale in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Tyler grew up in a very musical family and was particularly inspired by his uncle and grandfather. His love for guitar began in grade 6 when he was only 12 years old and he has been penning songs since the age of 16. In 2002 when Tyler graduated high school, he moved to Halifax where he attended Dalhousie University. Although he was not majoring in music, he completed several music courses on topics including guitar theory, pop culture, recording studio techniques and guitar history. While living on campus, Tyler met a drummer by the name of Matthew Gorman. They started playing together frequently, utilizing the common lounge area in their residence as a jam space. After a period of actively searching for new band members, the original Tyler Shea Band was completed with the addition of bassist Mark Thistle.

In 2006 the Tyler Shea Band's first album, the Redfish Ep, was released. The Ep was recorded in 3 days at Redfish Audio with James R. Shaw. Guest musicians on the album included horn players, Jeffrey Mosher and Jody Lynes of the Mellotones (the hottest local Halifax funk/R & B band) and violinist Sean Kemp (Lennie Gallant & Symphony Nova Scotia). Tyler’s major influence on this album was The Dave Matthews Band, one of his all time favourite groups.

"Now You're In Love", the first single off the ep received radio attention across the province and was featured on podcasts across the country. The single even made its way through the United States on the 2008 Indie Music for Life compilation cd (www.indiemusicforlife.org).

Over the years Tyler has played solo and with his band at venues all across Nova Scotia and as far as the Northwest Territories, including but not limited to: The Seahorse (Halifax, NS), The Music Room (Halifax, NS), The Carleton (Halifax, NS), The Company House (Halifax, NS), The Trellis Cafe (Hubbards, NS), The Red Knight (Yarmouth, NS), Ross Creek Center for the Arts (Wolfville, NS), Granville Green (Port Hawkesbury, NS), The Wildcat Cafe (Yellowknife, NWT).

Tyler has opened up for many artists such as Matthew Barber, Craig Cardiff, Rebekah Higgs, Old Man Luedecke, Michael Redden, Oh Dina, The Prospector’s Union, Madison Avenue etc.

In his final years of University, Tyler was able to partake in a song writing seminar headed by Pat Pattison, a professor at Berklee School of music. Pat personally critiqued “Ghosts”, a song from the redfish Ep and compared it to the style of one of his former students, John Mayer. After some great advice, Tyler left the seminar with a new found desire to craft and perfect his songs and lyrics. Now looking up to Songwriter’s like Joel Plaskett and Damien Rice, Tyler began writing songs destined for the solo performer. In 2008 the Tyler Shea Band went their separate ways and Tyler continued on as a solo artist.

After a long two years of finding his voice, Tyler released his debut solo album. Paper Hearts dropped on December 4th, 2010 and it is quickly building hype for the singer/songwriter. Songs from the album are hastily being picked up by radio stations, internet radio and podcasts. Also, two songs have been considered for placements in an Independent film being released and distributed by Lionsgate films in 2011.

Today, he continues his determination to master his art in hopes of someday being globally recognized as a Canadian songwriter and an East Coast musician.

Right & Wrong

Written By: Tyler Shea

why oh why do you arrive with your safety off
why can't i keep my eyes drifting off the clock
impatiently waiting for reasons to unfold
the night is getting younger, this is getting old

its not a long walk home
i'd like to be alone
it's time that you see what's happening to me
and learn whats right and wrong
just don't let it take too long

why oh why do you deny what you cannot see
I don't own a bible but let's hear your guilty plea
maybe baby if your vote can sway me
to believe that the devil will in fact repay me
i will lend you my heart and he can take my soul
if it will put me back together further down the road

it's time that you see what's happening to me
and learn whats right and wrong
just don't let it take too long

when your eyes go black
there is no turning back
we'll wander on this earth
tell me what its worth

its not a long walk home
i'd like to be alone
it's time that you see what's happening to me
and learn whats right and wrong
just don't let it take too long

Your Secret's Safe With Me

Written By: Tyler Shea

take what you get, until you forget
all about the simple artifacts
spend what you've made, until you get paid
and then turn around and do it all again

so only time will tell
if love can break this evil spell
cause you sing a different tune
in the darkness of the moon
until you wake your secret's safe with me

lock your lower lip, try not to slip
when your dancing, when your dancing on a cliff
hide your dismay, take me away
to a lighthouse with a different point of view

so only time will tell
if love can break this evil spell
cause you sing a different tune
in the darkness of the moon
until you wake your secret's safe with me

You Belong With Me

Written By: Tyler Shea

i don't feel much singing coming out today
but I can't place blame on the rain
What if I was…
What if you were gone, gone , gone

I can't imagine I would be in a better place
I'd be a two legged man in a three legged race
I wouldn't know what to do with all the extra space
If you were gone, gone gone

I know I told you once before
and baby i'll tell you once again
you're all i ever need, so why would I ask for more if you already know
you belong with me

i don't feel much bliss running through my veins
but I can't place blame on the rain
What if I was…
What if you were gone, gone , gone

I can't imagine I would ever numb the pain
I'd be an unfinished verse in a song with no refrain
I wouldn't know what to do on a sunny day
If you were gone, gone, gone

I know I told you once before
and baby i'll tell you once again
you're all i ever need, so why would I ask for more if you already know
you belong with me…

you're every little song
that i hear…
though my heart is strong
still i need you here...

I know I told you once before
and baby i'll tell you once again
you're all i ever need, so why would I ask for more if you already know
you belong with me…

Paper Hearts

Written By: Tyler Shea

Well how do you know that our love is true?
Baby you love me and i love you
through the thick and the thin, straight from the start
we'll color in our paper hearts
well baby there's no need to stay in the lines
Cause I am yours and you are mine

its ok if we make mistakes
ill be there for you if your spirit breaks
i will move all in if you raise the steaks
i'll have my paper heart on a paper plate
there will be no need to use a knife
just pull it close and hold on tight

As we flip through the pages, walk through the stages
give in to our feelings and fall through the ages of love

How do I know that our love is true?
you were meant for me and I was meant for you
Baby th ere's no need for a stick of glue
you're my puzzle piece and i'm stuck on you

Baby don't go out tonight
I need you here to keep me warm
don't go down without a fight
we can weather out the storm

As we flip through the pages, walk through the stages
give in to our feelings and fall through the ages,
we'll flip through the pages, walk through the stages
of love, love, love, love...

Bees Knees

Written By: Tyler Shea

I couldn't save lives, now i can't a song
it wouldn't be a surprise, if i looked up and you're gone
we could turn our backs, face against the wall
won't talk any smack to miss know-it-all

why'd you always look at me the wrong way
is it obvious? is it obvious?

I'm the bees knees, oh baby please
I know what it looks like but its not what it seems
I'm the bees knees well what does it mean
if you figure it out i think you're gonna be pleased

I could've been blue, I could've been yellow
I could've been red but i'd rather be dead, let's try to be mellow
we could turn our backs, face against the wall
won't talk any smack because its not our fault

why'd you always look at me the wrong way
is it obvious? is it obvious?

I'm the bees knees, oh baby please
I know what it looks like but its not what it seems
I'm the bees knees well what does it mean
if you figure it out i think you're gonna be pleased

Baby Don't Be Cold

Written By: Tyler A. Shea

you could stun me with the look on your face
tell me that you love me and not leave a trace
you can haunt me like a ghost who has lost his way
do you need some direction?

swing me like a pendulum and i'll get stuck
but you can let me go if it gets too much
hold on to me baby, it might get rough
i need some affection

So baby don't be cold
i need you to love and i need you to hold
and i need you to want me until im old
so baby don't be cold

let me know if you need some space
a little room to forget my face
my hope is getting lost in the human race
come back to me baby

i can't promise you the world on a plate
but i can keep you laughing when we're out on a dinner date
I could tell you that i'm crooked but i'm always straight

Baby don't be cold
i need you to love and i need you to hold
and i need you to want me until i'm old
so baby don't be cold

i have no secret's, my heart is yours to keep
could you keep it safe for me?
