Biography

Outstanding hip hop, lyrical frankness & honest portrayals of everyday life

Ben Chijioke, better known as British rapper Ty, signed to Tru Thoughts in January 2013 to begin the next stage in a remarkable career with the release of two singles.

With a reputation built on his original style and refusal to hop on any industry bandwagon, Ty is best known for his lyrical frankness and honest portrayals of everyday life, setting him aside from many mainstream hip hop acts and allowing him complete artistic independence. This has led to the release of four successful albums and a Mercury Prize nomination, among many high profile plaudits.

After gaining notoriety on the London underground scene Ty signed to Big Dada records in 2001, the same year his mighty debut album Awkward was released. The union between the artist and label saw a further two albums 2003s Mercury-nominated Upwards and Closer (2006) released over five years.

Since his fourth solo album, Special Kind of Fool, was released in 2010 via BBE records, Ty has featured and collaborated with many artists stretching from America to France. Closer to home, Ty features on a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, released in early 2012, and most recently recorded a track with former Radio 1 DJ and producer Kissy Sell Out.

A lifelong love of hip hop has seen the honest speaking South Londoner gain skills in sound engineering and producing, the latter leading to work with Scratch Perverts, Talib Kweli, Blak Twang and Arrested Development.

Ty is also known for his work as a spoken word artist. In 2013, he was asked to perform and host workshops for the British Council, which culminated in the conclusion of a 35 year halt on international performers in the Sudanese town of Port Sudan. As well as this, his spoken word efforts have seen Ty put in performances at The Big Chill Festival and The Royal Albert Hall. Alongside his work with the British Council Ty is also a member of The HipHop Shakespeare Company, running workshops with young people, showing the influences and works of Shakespeare in todays music scene.

Lyrics

Like You Never

Written By: B. Chijioke

[Verse 1]
For every five steps forward I take ten steps back
I love the music but can't see where it's at?
Strictly fast food runnings
How we supposed to adapt
How we supposed to raise kids to that
And I ain't blaming no one it starts with me
Before heart failure there's blocked arteries
We were usually on point no archery
Creative to a fault
Like an art degree but something happened it's kinda like a takeover
The sampling law changed
The looping of the breaks over
Tho corporate there's nothing pretty about this makeover
Pay for play and now you influence what we say
We even let you walk off with the deejay
It's hard to hear a single scratch on records these days besides the clich├ęs
Somebody got to keep up traditions
It's a new day but still something is missing I mean

[Chorus]
That's what I'm telling everybody (I'm like you never)
That's what I'm telling everybody (I'm like you never)

[Verse 2]
And now the new school is no school
Cos everybody and their mama knows Pro Tools
Writing raps and recording bad vocals
Being a star is more than being anti-social
I'm more than boastful
I'm hopeful of brighter tomorrow
Used to weaving words together other writers can follow
I hear anger in music but the message is hollow
Upon further inspection you can see what's been borrowed
Foreign ideals of real bluffing to do with nothing now we reinvent the wheel
Caps get peeled as we slip on banana skins
Stuttering stammering should have been Fannie Lou Hamer-ring
Instead we are glimmity glammering
This struggle is a headache plus Anadin
Mic check even breathing is challenging
The music is a powerful thing especially when it's used to boost the power Within but you don't hear me ha!

[Chorus]
That's what I'm telling everybody (I'm like you never)
That's what I'm telling everybody (I'm like you never)

[Verse 3]
I had my palm read
She told me not to leave this alone
So I miss real artist like Nina Simone
Full of integrity never too keen to be cloned
That's why the need to be different
Buried deep in my bones
Cos swagger never paid bills just skills
I guess I took the long road mountain plus hills
Turntables and mic cables love from the crowd is more important than the right label
And I don't want the 90's sound back
But you can't deny the Linn Drum really sounds wack
Just living thru the movie but not feeling the soundtrack
Not trying to be bougie but not trying to be round that
I grew up in a brown black facade so I'm not trying to act like I'm that large
But I'm trying to rap like I'm that guard when it comes to culture I'm pulling raps card Like a placard

[Chorus]
That's what I'm telling everybody (I'm like you never)
That's what I'm telling everybody (I'm like you never)

Playing With Fire

Written By: B.Chijioke / K.Daley / D.Mahorn

TY

You're, you're playing with fire fire fire fire
X4
Even with inner city inner vision you can never really be sure
Who's gonna make things raw and bring madness to the door
It can even start with your mates, trying to burglarise your gates
Asking you funny questions like (are you coming home late?)
Crackheads in my postbox trying to make me lose my calm then you smile in my face when I put a pound coin in your palm put a fist to your nostril
Get a court case and a hostel and a bad rap from the judge and a snide glance and a grudge
They say hold it down I say down here sucks like I don't want big bucks
Let me interrupt
Before I press self destruct and blow this up
Everything that I worked for may end up fucked
People wanna act like I owe them big golden notes
Make me wanna put the mic down and start holding folks
But the truth is its a roller coast no excuses my friend we can all be ghosts

AKALA

From the local to the global it's the same old saga
Got to get one up to come up, play with the fire
What do we teach our peeps if they want to reach higher?
Little bit of bleach, or leach or just preach your messiah
But the wisdom you speak can't beat your attire
In a place where what is sacred is our desire
Get whatever you can get but forget your neck
Cos they coming for heads when they collect them debts
Whether it's the few suits that you used to think is cute
Or a beef in the street with a heat and some local yutes
It's the same game when they take aim gotta maintain for the fame
But we're insane cos we maintain with the most dangerous pain
We can blame rain because it never came and rearranged all the flames
But chains only change when we rearrange our own brain
Can we really do it? I don't know maybe you can tell me?
Everybody playing with the fire to get wealthy is it healthy?

TY

Folks on the floor claiming postcodes I do not own
Gotta lotta bad temptations facing me at home
Wanna fly like a bird by sky high with my words but why
Bring sand to the beach if the lifeguard keeps your mouth shut dry
Never been okay but what you gonna do crochet?
Won't settle for the hockey cokey or the okey doke
Have to play it low key tho kick it aikido in the place in your face always try to kick it to the people...
The unspoken word rarely heard at all rap and spoken word favourite final call
People know what they're doing when they tamper with the process
Trapped in dirt when I'm trying to see more than Capt Kirk
On the enterprise re-energise don't apologise we epitomise (fire)
And of course you get burned every time you play with it
Number one youth music all over the world savour it...

DURRTY GOODZ

I told them I'm gonna make it
I told them I'm gonna take it
I told them when I'm coming out I ain't coming out no fake shit
So whenever you see me hustle an whenever me trying
Don't ever try knock that hustle somebody's gonna end up dying
What do you know about hours in the studio
All night til your so damned tired
But you gotta go work in the morning then the boss tells you that your fired
An you're like "What the fuck, what's this?!" I gotta feed the fam an pay the bills
Christmas is coming, my misses is running, I'm getting evicted, feeling restricted, could end up convicted, not what predicted, I gotta fix it an what's it all over this shit
I'm missing my brother
I nearly lost my life three times
Man have been dissin my mother
Coz I be spitting the lava
What a Palaver Lord they wanna bring me beef drama but let my enemies scatter as we continue the saga
Forgive them father
They not know what they've done ruining what I've been doing makes me go harder
Playing with the fire get burned learn!

Knock Knock (Kick Snare And An Idea)

Written By: B. Chijioke

Chorus

Knock knock, whose there? Kick snare and an idea that is not pop music
Not talking about a drop top here know the time like a wrist watch (everybody's talking 'bout it)
Knock knock, whose there? Kick snare and an idea that is not pop music
Not talking about a drop top here know the time like a wrist watch (everybody's talking 'bout it)

Verse One

And I intend to rock it never looking on the floor with my hands in my pocket
If that's you fam you need to stoppit
Pick up a book and digest some new topics and that's my friendliest warning
People looking kinda bored chicko! Maybe you're boring? When we come it's a no-brainer I'm no dougie but I'm fresh like the entertainer
While some of you look false like Wrestle Mania
It's not my job to correct your behaviour
Combustion is spontaneous
The club's on fire, promoters are blaming us
But really what can I do I'm nice and smooth and funky for you
Hard to contain and hard to construe like solid rock really hard to go thru

Verse Two

Fuck your couch and your chorus this regime is not for us
Most of us learn to take BULL like Taurus
Where there's no respect for us
Slipping like a wet walrus
Why bother?
And it's about that time for me to read a book to elevate my mind best place to hide the truth Is within a book spine to some I'm talking jazz but I'm not Courtney Pine
Tings and time like Rodney said a while ago
Proud of my big nose like Barry Manilow
When we start to flow its Guantanamo I love to carry on but I'm such an animal
Slash botanical slash mechanical my mass is tangible cash my manacle huh?
Who plays the harp to make the hummingbird sing
Make the people stand up like the hairs on Don King

Verse Three
The beginning ending and middle
Dexy midnight running without no fiddle
Sexy BS no need for the CS gas me up catch me up can you see us
360 degrees tryna catch a ride (all aboard) follow me
Follow me into a solo
You can get with this but don't mess with my mojo that's strictly a no-no
Like receiving tumours
Heard I was official though I don't believe in rumours
Something for the crooner like a great wine I'm a late bloomer
Straight laced coming out swinging like Azumah
Too many candle in the wind
Ken Swift windmills we get it in
Never been anything less than medicine
Singing bright kinda like Thomas Edison

Chorus

Knock knock, whose there? Kick snare and an idea that is not pop music
Not talking about a drop top here know the time like a wrist watch (everybody's talking 'bout it)
Knock knock, whose there? Kick snare and an idea that is not pop music
Not talking about a drop top here know the time like a wrist watch (everybody's talking 'bout it)
Knock knock, whose there? Kick snare and an idea that is not pop music
Not talking about a drop top here know the time like a wrist watch (everybody's talking 'bout it)
Knock knock, whose there? Kick snare and an idea that is not pop music
Not talking about a drop top here know the time like a wrist watch (everybody's talking 'bout it)

Let's Start

Written By: B. Chijioke

They say the sun don't shine forever, but I'm categorised as weak when actions say I'm tougher than leather
Al Green let's stay together, through a minefield of naysayers, see why I still endeavour
Nestled between a rock and a hard place, we cover more notes than a rock guitar case
I don't take any inspiration from Scarface, never stood still, I even sleep at a fast pace
Nat King Cole unforgettable soul that does not walk the path that Johnny Cash controls,
Ring the bell but don't move for whom the bell tolls,
Follow fashions need to run and sell clothes
No popularity contest, I'm trying to make meaningful music
My conquest designed to shake
Whoever's on it feel the sonics far and wide, close the distance let's get real platonic..... and roll..

Chorus

Verse two

Pulling rabbits out of thin air is not my habit
PLEASE, give me room let me work my magic
No day off work straight through the Sabbath shake the dice and stroll past snakes and ladders
In a rush, give me the keys to the truck, the road to victory is peas to the mush
To fight the power becomes easy to us
In the midnight hour, we turn leaves into dust
Let's skip breakfast at Tiffany's, I'm trying to skip by what you're slipping me, giving me false hopes of living vividly
Through dusty telescopes you hold timidly nahhh I refuse this weak imagery
Eating stale food is not obligatory so let's start the dialogue 'cos we're one people reporting to some kinda God..... now.... let's go

Well Well Well

Written By: B. Chijioke

Oooh
Ooooh

Ooh oooh oooh
I live in a world where
We're not loving ourselves here
Long division is king and queen
I dream of just living elsewhere
And I'm trying to be honest, tomorrow is not promised
Philosophers are flummoxed and still cannot predict when will the earth plummet
I pray for guidance for hope survival while signs are vital
We fight for titles?
Yes doors are slammable
And hearts are flammable
The Dow Jones fluctuated don't be a caged animal
Unravel the robe spread your wings and travel the globe
Release your fears get on the yellow brick road
We're all victims of evil buried treasures are often deceitful
When you take away pedestals, only thing left is people

Well well well well well well x 3
Well well well
