"U-47 Sixty seconds with Nick Kapche"

U-47
Sixty seconds with Nick Kapche
by Nick Chambers

Indy: Does your name have anything to do with the German WWII U-boat, U-47?

NK: No, it's actually an old German microphone. And that's where we got the idea, but it's more that the name has no connotations whatsoever. It's a letter and a number, so, hopefully, the music is what people focus on. It's our deal instead of trying to come up with a clever name.

Indy: How have the frigid winter temperatures of Gunnison influenced your music, style and, more importantly, attitude?

NK: Any small town where there's limited stuff to do, especially at night, makes you look for something you can do. It gives us something to focus on, as opposed to sitting around and drinking. It's definitely cool to be from a place a lot of people seem to be very scared of. When we tell people we're from Gunnison they're like, "Oh my god. It's so cold there." It makes you feel like more of a man, I guess.

Indy: How'd you end up in Gunnison?

NK: Our bass player is actually from here. He's [originally] from Ohio City, but he went to Gunnison High School. I'm from Chicago, and Keith's from southeast Colorado. Both Keith and I came here for school, and just kind of stuck around. I guess we're not done yet.

Indy: Your MySpace says you were "born from the love of music." What influences created this love and do you all share them?

NK: I think we all share similar music tastes. I like Devo, Led Zeppelin. My favorite band ever is the Stooges. The White Stripes. Some good country like Jerry Jeff Walker. Joy Division is what we all like too. Anything that's real and has something to say. I think we're all into that kind of stuff. I like catchy songs, but at the same time I hate music that's mass-produced and poppy and doesn't have anything to say.

Bio

U-47 is a band born from a love of music, a mix of people from different backgrounds that have come together to form their version of what an original rock band should be. On guitar and vocals is Nick, a Colorado transplant who hails from Evanston, Illinois. Nick leads by example as a bruised veteran of the Chicago music scene. On drums U-47 features Keith, who comes from Walsh, Colorado with a few stops in-between. Keith helps define the raw feel the band is known for with his hard-pounding, no-frills drum style. Finally, we have Joe Rees on bass guitar and vocals. Joe lays the bass down with the precision and flair of a vintage Betamax VCR, completing the band's unique sound. Joe grew up in beautiful Gunnison, Colorado, the current home of U-47.
