UGLY - UGLY
ROCK RIDGE

Playing rock music without a net, the Detroit quartet Ugly make their fellow statesmen Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, and Ted Nugent proud by liberally taking elements of each man's rock legacy to compose their 12-track eponymous affair. Declaring a rock revolution never comes easy, yet this raucous quartet make it sound easier than it seems with huge backbeats, Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Van Halen-esque vocal and guitar showmanship, and oodles of arena-rock fodder from the days of yore from the obvious ("Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll") to the obliquely Southern ("Son"). Sharing as much in common with bands of today like Shinedown and Saliva as they do Grand Funk Railroad and KISS, even when this kickass outfit do grab from the old bag of Nickelback rock cliches at times ("Everything"), it fits like a glove, never sounding forced or contrived. Ugly ultimately delivers a down and dirty, whiskey-fueled, foot-stompin' release bursting with the hard rock flair that the FM dial seemingly forgot about. www.rockridgemusic.com -Mike SOS - Crave Underground

Rising band Ugly celebrates debut album tomorrow
By Jeffrey Lee Puckett

The Courier-Journal
Ugly is the nasty rock 'n' roll love-child of Louisville and Detroit, a band that literally started with a fistfight in a Cleveland parking lot.
That went down a couple of years ago between Frank Green and Geo Teubl, when Green played bass for Louisville's Outspoken and Teubl was with Detroit's Bridge. The friendship forged in Cleveland was rekindled when both bands split up and Teubl began working with Green, Kevin McCreery and Donnie Highland. Ugly is celebrating the release of its eponymous debut album tomorrow at Angel's Rock Bar at 4th Street Live (9 p.m., $5). Heaven Hill opens.

Ugly has been very active in the Midwest and recently opened three dates for Kid Rock.
"The shows were by far the biggest we had done to date and as a band you live for chances like those," Green said. "To stand in front of a crowd that's probably half-juiced when they walk in the door and have them stand up and stay up for 35 minutes gives us a sense of redemption for all the work we've done in the past 2½ years."
Green hopes Ugly can hook up with Rock again later this year. Meanwhile they'll keep grinding on the club circuit. For a taste of "Ugly," go to www.myspace.com/uglyamerica.

"Metal Core Fanzine- review"

September 24, 2007

UGLY/Self Titled (Rock Ridge Records) Just pure ass kicking rock n roll that would not be out of place in the early 70's. This has that raw style and the band play total old school. They sort of remind me of Grand Funk Railroad at times. The tunes all are kick ass rockers with none of today's sounds and that is good as we need some old bands keeping the old flame alive. I love the guitar sound this band use and the songs rocked my world. Info:

"Ugly"

Billed as a Van Halen-meets-Lynyrd Skynyrd sounding act, Ugly, which features Independence native George "Geo" Teubl on vocals, is hoping to jump aboard the recent trend of rock radio acts turning up the hedonism meter. However, while Hinder is aping Poison's "Open Up and Say Ahh!" vibe, Ugly is thinking more along the lines of Motley Crue's "Girls, Girls, Girls." Lead single "Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll" is in-your-face while "Friday Night (In the City)" kicks up dirty guitar licks, with Teubl's strong vocals leading the way. While suffering from a common complaint of sounding too similar and calculated, the band has a raw energy that can't be faked. And Teubl and his bandmates didn't approach the 13-track album with blinders on. Along with the 1980s-sounding anthems is a subtle grunge acknowledgment. Sure, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but Ugly is more appealing than repulsive. Grade: B- - Plain Dealer

"Hard Rock Hideout-Live review, WEBN Riverfest"

Every Labor Day Weekend, Cincinnati Rock station WEBN, has their big Labor day celebration, that ends with one of the biggest Fireworks displays in the United States.

In 2007, there were three music stages. One in Newport, KY, and two in Cincinnati. Most of the stages had local acts, except for the P&G Pavillion where I sought out two national hard rock acts, Ugly and Operator.

Ugly band picUgly is a newer Detroit hard rock band that is made up by former members of the band Tantric and Outspoken. Ugly took the stage around 6 P.M. I have not seen this band before, and only heard a song or two prior to their performance.

I am happy to say that Ugly put on a great show. Their hard-driving, high energy rock revved up the crowd waiting to see the Headliner, Operator.

The lead singer, Geo Teubl came out after the show and was signing autographs and meeting the fans. He has the right attitude that will take him, and his band to the next level of success. The band Operator could take some personality and attitude lessons from Ugly.

Operator is the band that I have been looking forward to seeing for a few weeks now. I canJohnny Strong from Operator only describe Operator, as the Soulcrushing idiots. The sound company seemingly could not get their sound right, and the band was unhappy from the start. The band led off with the profanity filled, Live Your Way. Singer Johnny Strong immediately showed attitude as he grumbled about being denied his First Amendment rights. He sang the song without the curse words.

Considering the number of young kids present at this outdoor free show, that was probably a good thing. Their is a time and place for profanity in rock music. It doesn't bother me at all. Profanity is a pretty normal thing in hard rock and metal music. That doesn't change the fact that I certainly wouldn't want my stepdaughter or any other children to listen to a song filled with profanity.

After three songs, the band pulled an Axl Rose and stormed off the stage, and did not return. The crowd followed up with plenty of "Operator Sucks" comments being yelled at the top of their lungs, and rightfully so. The drummer came back out and played a short solo, and tried to win back some fans by throwing out a handful of drumsticks, but the damage was already done.

Cincinnati got their first impression of Operator, and it wasn't a good one.

A later conversation with the event's sound guy provided the following info: "Operator showed up and were completely unapproachable all day","They seemed to have an attitude when they showed up." There may be more to this story that meets the eye.

It is a true shame. I am sure every band has a bad day, but Operator will need to redeem themselves in a major way before I would even consider paying to see them.

The Soulcrusher album is a damned good one, but the band isn't going to win any new fans by pulling stupid stunts like the one at this show.

The day wasn't a total loss. Ugly was a nice surprise on this Sunday evening, and will be a band that will gain further support by the Hard Rock Hideout.

If you have tickets for another Operator show, prepare yourself for disappointment. If Ugly hits your town, don't miss them. They will put on a great show for you!

Ugly brings us their self Titled debut "Ugly" on Rock Ridge Music. This album delivers hard hitting Classic Rock goodness. Most of the styles on the album remind me of early Motley Crue meets Kiss.

The majority of the album is the fun upbeat rockers. But, when we get to the middle of the album we hit the power ballad, as i like to call it. "Son" has the Poison "Every Road Has It's Thorn" vibe written all over it. Which is not a bad thing at all. We need more bands like these guys. These guys aren't too original in my book but they are very good musicians and a necessity for this day and age in music to break up the monotony of the Emo based Rock out there.

So if your looking for a hard hitting rock album with a few ballad type songs this is for you. the other ballad comes in later in the album called "Washed Out." I'm a sucker for the ballads and i think these guys do it really well. They break up the power rockers with the slower tunes on the album.

A definite buy if your sick of a lot of the stuff out there and need a change to bring you "back in the day to classic rock." - Melodic.net

Hailing out of Detroit, Michigan, Ugly play rock and roll so cut back from the frills and trappings that you just have to smile at the choice of name. Pretty this sure isn't, this is rock n roll played by a bunch of guys that have cut a record to entertain people, playing their hearts out and loving every single second of it.

Produced by Rick Parashar who has previously worked with Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and 3 Doors Down, this self titled album kicks out 11 tracks of energy dripping with energy, passion and conviction. Formed out of the ashes of Outspoken and Bridge, both from the American Midwest, and with less than a year together, this album is really pretty damn good.

If you like you rock n roll sans frills, then your going to like this. Imagine Nashville Pussy but without the southern feel, and you pretty much know what these guys are going to sound like, and by the time you get to 'Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll' you'll know for sure.

Pick of the album? 'The Cats Ass', you just can't fault any band that manage to get a line like 'I Feel Like A Cat in a Dog and Pony Show, and it's so overrated.' into a song, oh and the guitar work kicks ass too!

Donnie Highland - Drums and Backing Vocals
Frank Green - Bass and Backing Vocals

Bio

On a particularly nasty night at the Cleveland Music Festival in 2003, two Midwestern bands (Bridge and Outspoken) performed on the Agora stage to a rowdy rock ‘n’ roll crowd. After the show, Geo Teubl (Bridge) and Frank Green (Lava-Atlantic's Outspoken) drunkenly fought in the parking lot, solidifying a friendship in only the way excessive amounts of Southern Comfort and rock star antics can. Two years later Outspoken broke-up and the guitarist (Kevin McCreery, formerly of Mavericks Tantric) contacted Geo Teubl after hearing Bridge had also parted ways. The two began writing immediately and after their first jam session with Donnie Highland (drums, Lava-Atlantic's Outspoken) and Frank Green (bass guitar, Lava-Atlantic's Outspoken), the band Ugly was formed. Front man, Geo Teubl said, "We had an immediate chemistry, mutual admiration for each others sound, and most importantly we all wanted to put the art back in party with raw rock !" With less than a year under their belt, Ugly already has an impressive fan base all across the Midwest. Heavy, shredding guitars riffs combined with slamming, skin penetrating drum beats meet Geo Teubl’s vocals that sound as if Ronnie Van Zant, Danny Joe Brown and Jim Morrison just shared a bottle of whiskey and are singing from the bottom of their ugly souls. Ugly’s live performance is the groups strongest suite, according to Teubl "people come to our shows to experience straight forward rock n roll and have a good time, we’ll play to whoever and we’ll blow them away!" In May 2007, Ugly inked a deal with Rock Ridge Music and dubbed the "NEXT great arena rock band" by label president Tom Derr . The band has just completed recording their debut release with famed Producer Rick Parashar (Pearl jam, 3 Doors Down, Nickelback, Bon Jovi) and will release their first album October of 2007. With record label support and four hardcore rock ‘n’ roll ‘tudes……things are going to get Ugly.
