"uKanDanZ is the future of ethiogroove !!!!"

Between ethiogroove and modern music you find a musical hybrid called Ukandanz. Intense and powerful songs, mixed with energetic rock, jazz improvisation and Ethiopic soul.
Asnake Guebreyes originates from the vibrant music scene in Addis Abeba where he’s worked with traditional vocal- and drum styles. He appears on the Ethiopiques vol. 18 compilation and has worked with Han Bennik amongst others.
The members of Ukandanz willingly cross different musical borders, at the same time they also maintain the musical identity and origin.
Ethiopia is a world unto itself; European colonists never got a grip on the inaccessible country; not even the Italians. Ethiopian music reflects its’ history; the conspiratorial, oriental melodies and elusive rhythms have little in common with any other form of music.
The members of the Ethiopian/French formation uKanDanZ – being heard for the first time in The Netherlands! – play a staggeringly potent blend of traditional melodies, groovy lines from Addis Abeba and hardcore rock. The intensity of their music makes many punk formations seem pale in comparison.

- Mondomix (paper edition)

"uKanDanZ :: Yetchalal"

Francis Falceto has let us discover ethiojazz via the sublime éthiopiques series on the French label Buda Musique. And he clearly isn’t done surprising us. At the end of 2011 with the compilation éthioSonic, a double cd full of ethiogrooves made today at the four corners of the earth. You’ve had the opportunity to discover it here on Groovalizacion Radio. uKanDanZ from Lyon was part of that compilation.
The French band around the Ethiopian signer Asnaqé Gèbrèyès had already surprised us on the EP Ethiopian Crunch Music and this first full-cd Yetshalal (part of the éthioSonic series) confirms what we were assuming : a new étiopique pearl is born ! Superb ethiojazz with the energy of rock’n’roll, big grooves, phat guitar riffs and a rhythmic that makes us move into trance. Reinforced by the boosted voice of Gèbrèyès and a saxophone that gets emotional then screaming.
An energy bomb that brings new blood to the ethiogroove scene, a genre that is going through a revival thanks to the flexibility of ethiojazz to mary with other genres, like rock in the case of uKanDanZ. Live, four musicians (drums, sax, guitar, keyboards) and the traditional singing of Gèbrèyès are sufficient to deliver a powerful show, sometimes in the line of seventies ethiojazz, sometimes going into hard rock, but always full of trance. One could wonder how Gèbrèyès reacts to the ’violence’ of guitar and drum, but having seen the concert at Recyclart in Brussels, we can assure you : he is totally out of his mind on stage ! The rock formation is new to Gèbrèyès, but he clearly feels at home with uKanDanZ.
Now it’s up to you to dance without scruples. You can dance (uKanDanZ) !

Bio

A STORY

At the beginning Ukandanz was the garage project of four French jazzmen, renowned for their respective projects and collaborations (Paolo Fresu, Chris Speed, Didier Lockwood, Louis Sclavis, The Amsterdam Klezmer band, Cosmic Connexion, John Greaves …) as well as a strong mutual desire for discoveries and experiments.
In the course of their rehearsals and concerts, with the impulse of Damien Cluzel (Guitar - Jump to Addis / Ethiopiques n°15), they naturally became more and more influenced by Ethiopique sounds.
The quartet explored Ethiopian rhythms and sonorities composing a singular repertoire with a huge rock energy.

AN ENCOUNTER

Spotted by Francis Falceto (director of the Ethio-Sonic collection), uKanDanZ was invited to perform at the “Ethiopian International Music Festival” in Ethiopia with a charismatic singer from Addis Ababa : Asnake Guebreyes (Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed Trio, The Ex, Addis-Abeba Police Orchestra with Getatchew Mekurya…). Their contribution was obvious and the new band had great success in its first ethio-european tour in 2010. Ever since, the band has been on the road, thrilling its audiences with hypnotic ethiogroove and crazy stage performances. Here they were rising up to the challenge of charming and bringing together a wide audience ranging from jazz lovers, world music and rock festival enthusiasts to more underground crowds like squatters, Ethiopian wasteland onlookers, travelers…

A UNIQUE AND EXPLOSIVE STYLE:
THE ETHIOPIAN CRUNCH MUSIC

Taking its inspiration in traditional and popular Ethiopian songs, the music of uKanDanZ is mainly characterized by the originality of its compositions and arrangements as well as by an extra-ordinary energy.
The quartet delivers a powerful and subtle rock groove (odd rhythms, dissonances) sublimated by the virtuoso voice of Asnake Guebreyes.
