Una Keane releases debut LP ‘Trees’ on November 5th 2010.
This is a record of 11 lovingly crafted songs exploring the intricacies of growing up, falling down, getting back up, smiling and reflecting upon it all. The message is positive, fun and just a little bit quirky as Keane’s left-of-centre approach shines tiger-bright on songs like lead single “Alice”, “Saw a Wave” and the hook-heavy “Microscopic. Biography

Dubliner Úna Keane releases debut LP ‘Trees’ on November 5th 2010 on Marabou Records, her own cottage industry label. This is a record of 11 lovingly crafted songs exploring the intricacies of growing up, falling down, getting back up, smiling and reflecting upon it all.

‘Trees’ resides for the most part in the alternative acoustic genre while dipping occasionally into the realm of pop. The message is overwhelmingly positive. A more quirky, left of centre approach on songs like lead single ‘Alice’, ‘Saw a Wave’ and the hook-heavy ‘Microscopic’ point to one unafraid of experimentation, of blurring boundaries. Indeed, for the music video for ‘Alice’ Úna enlisted the help of friend and Expanded Architecture artist Sarah Breen Lovett, who integrated aspects of avant-garde film, expanded cinema and architecture. Think Alice in Wonderland jamming with The White Stripes.

Following a Postgrad in Music technology, Úna set up her own Recording studio in 2008. Much fun was then had figuring out all the techie stuff around microphones, preamps, pianos and ProTools until it all started to make sense.

The Album soundscape is made up of more than 10 instruments: Pianos, synths and glockenspiel come courtesy of Úna. She sings with a clear voice, at once raw and delicate. An adventurous rhythm section and electric & acoustic guitars add edge, while lush cello & viola lines embue the songs with layers of velvety warmth. French accordion, oboe and uilleann pipes complete the line-up. Recording took place between Úna’s home studio in Kilmainham and friend Ben Rawlins’ studio in the College of Music & Drama in Rathmines between 2008 and 2010. The album was mixed by Ben and mastered by Aidan Foley of Masterlabs, with Úna and Ben co-producing the record.

A classically trained pianist, Úna’s take on piano has been informed by a deep-seated love of the music of Beethoven, Debussy and such Film Composer luminaries as Yann Tiersen and Ennio Morricone. In 2008 she was the recipient of an IMRO scholarship to pursue study in Film Scoring at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston – garnering a Distinction for her short, but challenging 6-month stint.

Alice

Written By: Una Keane

ALICE

Wait by the edge till nothing else moves
Alice walks out in the light
Holding her breath as she takes her first step
You could cut the air with a knife

But she won’t she won’t she won't look down
Won’t see the ground
And the audience gasp
Waiting….watching…wondering
Will she fall down
And if she does
Will she fall on them?

I don’t know much
'Bout this business
But something tells me
if Alice misses (x2)

The lions and tigers will let out a roar
Afraid for the girl they adore
And the ringmaster – yeah he’ll frown
Say something like ‘Send in the clowns’
Say something like ‘Send in the clowns’ ??

But Alice won’t fall off of her tigh-t-rope
'Cos she’s in a world of her own
Inching on forward and blind to the fuss
One little step at a time

But she won’t she won’t she won't look down
Won’t see the ground
And the audience gasp
Waiting….watching…wondering
Will she fall down
And if she does
Will she fall on them?

Down by the River

Written By: Una Keane

DOWN BY THE RIVER

Down by the River
Down by the clear blue
Down by the water
I looked and I saw you

Oo-ooh (x3)
Again and again
An aged woman on a blue horizon
Did she notice me?
Then the light, the light it was fading
So I sat, sat beneath the trees…

Yeah yeah yeah (x2)

Don’t mind the darkness
Don’t mind the silence (hmm)
The breeze so gentle
As it caresses me

Oo-ooh (x3)
Again and again
This aged woman on a blue horizon
Yet she seemed happy
But when I turned I saw that
She was me…

Yeah yeah yeah

Victory

Written By: Una Keane

VICTORY

Victory came out today
Dusting off her coat of grey
And all the soldiers wanna know
Where it is she plans to go

As over the hill she wanders on
Drinking in the light between the trees
Come play with me

What a perfect silhouette
The orange trees forming continents
And all of science is set aside
Weaving through those avenues

As over the hill she sits and waits
Watching as the sun finds its’ bed
Come lie with me

Victory came out today
Dusting off her coat of grey
And all the soldiers wanna know
Where it is she plans to go
As over the hill she wanders on
Drinking in the light between the leaves

The Sailor's Waltz

Written By: Una Keane

THE SAILOR'S WALTZ

I could waltz for hours
Chasing leaves and flowers
Point me northwards face up to the breeze
Botticelli’s Venus on high seas

Da dah da dum da dum (x2)

With my abacus and compass
They’ll guide us on our journey
Stars at night will light us to dry land
Kaleidoscopic patterns in the sand
?
And I feel like the open seas are offering it all, all to me
And all that is bright and good is raining on down, down on me
Yeah I feel like the oldest part is calling out, out to me
Whispering of places long forgotten

I could waltz for hours
I could waltz for hours
