"UNA VIA"

NYC, NY
Indie Label
By: Michael Potvin

Una Via has been gigging around New York and New Jersey since 1998. They have gotten nods from www.purorock.com and have played in a Latin rock show sponsored by corporate dollars. Their success is due to their Demo/ EP “Hasta el Fin” and word of mouth praise of their dynamic live performance. Una Via was formed by Johnny and Leonel Cayamcela (guitars). After auditioning a few musicians in the scene they cemented their sound and line up with Juan Pablo Calvo (drums), George Vivanco (bass) and Mauricio Cardenas (vox).

The brothers Cayamcela have created a sound that reminds one of the distorted riff heavy Soundgarden/Alice in Chains, the pounding rhythm section of Tool, and a vocal styling reminiscent of Scott Weiland of Velvet Revolver. The brothers have taken these influences added five parts Latin and have produced a rock band to be reckoned with.

Crystal Wall exemplifies the power of the Una Via’s rhythm section, Cardenas singing is powerful and melodic. The song relates one who left the security of home to rule the streets and cast off oppression and suffering. Showing a will to persevere Una Via asks if suffering is just a mind set, or imagination. If the lyrics are viewed in terms of the band itself, one would see that the band does in fact own the streets. They have endured though years of gigging to build a fan base and release their first full length “Processed”. Now that this oppression has been cast aside the band is free to journey out of New York and introduce the rest of the east coast and the country to their sound.

The band writes its lyrics in both English and Spanish. “Entre Tus Manos” is a Spanish number that showcases Johnny and Leonel Cayacela’s guitar abilities. The song opens with a wah wah sound with the second guitar riffing below as filler, then explodes into a thick guitar laden sound supported by the ever present, always strong, rhythm section.

Much to the chagrin of my high school Spanish teachers I cannot understand a word of this song. This is not a comment on the band as it on my own ignorance. Luckily, due to a diverse workforce I was able to have the lyrics roughly translated by a co-worker. “Entre Tus Manos”, or “Between Your Hands”, relates a relationship where the speaker has placed their life in another’s hands. Looking to express fear, pain and passion the speaker’s life is in the hands of another and lives with the hope that these hands will one day open and so allowed to live.

Una Via is a band that puts forth their message bilingually and their music has a Latin feel. This band should not be pigeon holed as a “Latin Rock Band” as they build a hard rock sound that is built on heavily on classic and alternative rock sounds. They are a powerful group will move Spanish and non-Spanish speakers alike.

"UnaVia"

September 9, 2006

Rock, Rap and Latin Beats mixed together create the sounds of Una Via. This latin alternative rock band has been around for a couple of years now and with a strong and loyal following. Originally from Ecuador and Colombia, the members of this band met and became what they are today…one of NY’s hottest band.

With rhythmically intense, rock influenced beats, Una Via gets the hard core crowd head banging while the next song makes the women go wild. Songs like Crystal Wall and Por Amor are two great examples of how far they go musically. On the other hand, Giras, their first music video, signifies the bands entrance into the world of television. This band is all over the place and they are here to stay.

To put it all into one sentence…Una Via is the present, the future and the History of Alternative Rock translated into Spanish!

"UNA VIA INVADE ACAPULCO"

Direct from the mean streets of New York and making waves all the way in ACAPULCO, MEXICO, is none other than UNA VIA. ENCHUFATE has a quick "Q and A" with guitar player, Johnny Cayamcela.

ENCHUFATE : For those who are just “plugging in”….can you give us a quick break down of who’s in the band UNA VIA?

UNA VIA : Mauricio Cardenas (vocals), Leonel Cayamcela (guitar/vocals), Jorge Vivanco (bass), Juan Pablo Calvo (drums), and myself Johnny Cayamcela (lead guitar).

ENCHUFATE : You guys have a very colorful heritage. Where is everyone from?

UNA VIA : Mauricio and Juan Pablo are from Colombia. Leonel, Jorge and I are from Ecuador.

ENCHUFATE : How did you guys meet?

UNA VIA : Leonel, Jorge and I started UNA VIA back in 1995. We met Juan Pablo at one of the shows, who later introduced us to Mauricio in 2002.

ENCHUFATE : Has the rock world, NY in particular, been receptive to your style of rock?

UNA VIA : Yeap. We’ve been playing in New York for a long time and in many different venues. Little by little we’ve acquired new fans. The rock scene in New York is very difficult, but some how we have accomplished our goals in the Latin market, but there’s still a lot of work to do. The Latin rock scene in N.Y needs to get bigger and more organized.

ENCHUAFTE : Now, you guys just came back from a successful series of shows in Acapulco, Mexico, including appearances on the TV shows “Soy Guerrero” and “Buenos Dias Acapulco” on Televisa, La Super 94.5 Radio, a live performance in the Acapulco Zocalo, a packed house at the Hard Rock Café as well as various local venues in the city, how did the people of Acapulco treat you?

UNA VIA : People in Acapulco rock! It was a great experience for us. The crowds had a great reaction. We also had a meeting with the Mayor of Acapulco, Ing Felix Salgado Macedonio, who made the Zocalo show possible and gave UNA VIA a “reconocimiento”. We are very thankful to the Mayor as well as the Rockeros Mexicanos.

ENCHUFATE : Did you do anything different to prepare for a show at the Hard Rock Café than you would any other show?

UNA VIA : Yes. We’ve been working a lot on our performance and show in general, especially because we are representing the U.S. Latino community. We want to give the best show that we can.

ENCHUFATE : Your video "Giras" and "Crystal Wall" are playing on MTV Español at the moment. What’s next on the agenda for UNA VIA?

UNA VIA : The next step for us is to work on the new album and promote our music with a tour through the U.S. and Mexico later this year.

You can find more info on UNA VIA at their website www.unaviarock.com , at their MYSPACE page www.myspace.com/unaviarock , or E.mail them at unavia@usa.com. - Enchufate

With a hard alternative edge, Una Via brings a hammered vibe to alternative rock music. From contemporary rhythmic moving melodies to the upbeat jam on "Cryatall Wall" (I really like that song...) these cats known as Una Via have got some serious musical demonstrations happenin'. The technical aspects of their music are bang on, with obvious weight given to time change and fun thrown in the mix. Una Via is hard latin rock music with soul.
