"Unborn Sun Album Release by Ian Hill"

The members of Stockton's Unborn Sun didn't know where they wanted to take their band.

Singer Robert Fenley and guitarist Doug Carranza enjoyed writing together and they had recorded a few tracks. Uncertain of what they wanted to do next, they decided to put the songs on MySpace.com.

"A lot of people liked the music," bassist Jim Cravens, 39, said.

That helped encourage the powerful alt-rock group to record its self-titled debut CD. Unborn Sun will play an album-release show Friday at the Stockton Empire Theatre.

Fenley, 30, said fans should expect an honest, enjoyable performance from the band.

"We try to go out and have fun," he said.

The audience also will be able to witness the strength of Fenley's voice. It's a towering inferno that, on the new CD, recalls the vocal power of Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell.

The band's debut album is catchy and melodic, but it doesn't sacrifice the driving strength of alt-rock. Carranza, 40, plays nimbly, and Cravens and drummer Juan Torras, 36, keep a solid, aggressive flow.

Unborn Sun started three years ago when Fenley and Carranza, friends and San Joaquin Delta College classmates, began writing songs together.

"I'd be over at his house and he'd have a piano," Fenley said. "I'd be messing around with it and I'd say, 'Let's write a song.' We started and it was easy."

"We clicked," Carranza said.

Last summer, the band drew the attention of Sacramento alt-rock station KWOD 106.5 FM, which featured Unborn Sun in its "Sounds of Sac" series.

Unborn Sun's debut CD is available on iTunes. The CD release show starts at 7 p.m. Friday at the Empire, 1825 Pacific Ave. Silver Griffin also will perform. Cover is $10.

Bio

Unborn Sun first formed in the winter of 2003 as an acoustic trio, writing songs while attending college. When the band added a drummer they were able to add new dynamics to the music to take it to a new level. The band believes that one of the best ways to display the music’s quality is in a live show. Over the last few years the band has played a great number of live performances in front of thousands of fans.
Unborn Sun has been featured on KWOD 106.5 out of Sacramento, CA on their Sounds of Sac show. Kevin Seconds of KWOD had this to say about Unborn Sun, “Compared to bands like U2, Coldplay and Audioslave, Stockton's Unborn Sun have been rockin' the Central Valley since 2003 with their passionate and melodic, alternative rock sound. Listen to ‘What Are We Doing Here?’ from Unborn Sun on 106.5 KWOD.”
Unborn Sun was also a featured act on B93.1 in Modesto to promote the CD release with an on air interview and live show. The reviews from the listeners was overwhelmingly positive.
Their first CD release is the self-titled “Unborn Sun.” The CD features all new music and re-recordings of their popular early demos.
