"They are a band who are not just playing music; they are creating something new; and they will perfectly suit the UK music scene"

Are you feeling guilty listening to U2 after all the demonstrations that have been going on at the last Glastonbury. Is Bono no longer your cup of tea? Well if you feel the need for a change, leave your music culture open to bigger spaces. Imagine eastern countries, imagine vodka, imagine Poland - but don't imagine polish music. Why not try Underground Fly.

You may have never heard of them before, and it's a shame as this four piece polish band based in Poznan already have three records behind them. They were also touring all over Europe in 2010, doing festivals and opening for the likes of Slade. They have played quite a few shows in the UK, such as the Camden Purple Turtle and the 12 Bar Club in London.

Underground Fly is a mix of rock, alternative and what they call their own style, the "fly rock" which is an explosion of strong anthems, heavy guitars and drum chorus.

Formed in 2002; these four childhood friends had always put music as their first priority, and their jobs have always been ruled by the band. They have been discovered by Captive Music Records and produced the three records with them.

Their songs are described as killer anthems - their track Light is On possesses strong lyrics as does I'm Gonna Love You as well as Tonight we come out from the underground. Every word is powerful but at the same time touching; their lyrics speak to you and have meaning much like Bon Jovi's tracks.

People said that they look like U2; and in some ways it is actually true. For example, they have an original super-cool rock band appearance, and the lyrics are a mixture of U2's and their own floating sounds.

Underground Fly are definitely not like other polish bands and no doubt you will soon hear more about them. They are a band who are not just playing music; they are creating something new; and they will perfectly suit the UK music scene - Lotus Magma Magazine

"A lot of melody and a bit of 80’s spirit is there to be found"

Underground Fly is an alternative rock band from Poland, which released their second album “Awakenings” in 2008

The band had a quite successful period behind them when they released their debut album. In their own country they played in the major venues and also made it over the border. Now with “Awakenings” Underground Fly comes in quite serene and peaceful with “Clumsy Jester”. A lot of melody and a bit of 80’s spirit is there to be found. “Liar” for example has that typical 80’s rock feeling. “Strange Sunrise”, the ninth song on the album, has an interesting start. You might think it is live recorded in a bar, but then it quickly changes to a more polished, produced sound.
As in general on this album there is a lot of catchiness with lyrics that can be translated on various ways. All songs seem to have something different but they somehow managed to keep it all together as well. It really is an album and not a collection of different songs.

The artwork of the album radiates the old school feeling that often pops up. It is mainly black and white and has a quite dark, mysterious image on front. For those who want to read up to the lyrics, they can be f

 ound in there as well.

 MAVERICK - vocals, guitar
 SEEMOON - guitar, keyboard
 BOSS - bass
RATUSZ - drums - Tempelores Magazine

"2011 could be the year of the FLY"

REVIEW by Chris Phillips - "Light is on" (ENG)

Poland`s Underground Fly, just made a flying visit to the U.K. and after many tours and Three albums this tight unit are finally on the cusp of the international success their music deserves. With a spirit akin to early U2 and superb instrumentation along with the ability to write some Killer Chorus`, 2011 could be the year of the FLY. I`m Gonna Love You is real assault on chart style pop rock, Little Rain is a lot darker but it prepares us for the stunning title track. Light Is On, has everything and the Kitchen sink, moving through several movements like a Muse Behemoth, once heard Light Is On will be swimming around your head for ages. Calmer waters approach in the form of Paradise, a Eurorock track which is has a nice pleasnt feel about, it makes you feel safe and warm. I Recommend this E.P. but also dig out the Awakenings album (Captive Records CAGED09) and listen to Clumsy Jester a Prog. Rock Masterpiece. - Chris Phillips (BRfm UK)

"Just think about giving it a try!"

Underground Fly is one of the few Polish rock bands that got its name out outside of Poland with their debut album. In their home country this progressive rock quartet is seen as one of the leaders of a new media and music scene that is developing rapidly. Enough information for me to check this one out I figured, and so I did. Here’s Awakenings.

Underground Fly is something I haven’t really heard before. Basically you can expect easy going rock songs that head into many different directions. One song has a more melodic approach while another might be a bit more poppy, like ‘Robo’. Especially this last song leaves me with mixed feelings as it’s the last song of the album but I would have preferred a better closer.

But let’s stick to the music a bit more. The different rock approaches work out quite fine for these Polish rockers. While ‘Clumsy Jester’ and ‘The Fools Truth’ are just damn catchy in a heavier way (the way that makes you nod your head along), ‘Save My Child’ is more like a sing-along ballad. Which makes this album quite diverse. However, it still sounds as a whole. As I read the biography that came along with this album, I discovered that the Polish press tends to call Underground Fly’s style fly rock. And come to think of it, I agree on that one. Although it’s less “fly” than for example Khoma (yeah, still remember that one?!).

Having so many different songs on your album, it’s hard to keep them all equally interesting to all listeners. And of course that also goes for me. So, as I’m pleasantly surprised by some songs, others fail to really convince me. I think this album is really a rock album to sit back and relax by. It certainly has enough to discover so you won’t get bored very easily after listening to it for two or three times. Just think about giving it a try! - Metalrage.com

"This is something you can’t find in Poland"

"You will notice that the music is not Polish at all .. It has nothing to do with what's happening in the Polish music scene. Saying that, I mean that this music is at a completely non-Polish, much higher than the Polish level. You can not compare this band to any existing music stream in Poland or to any Polish band as well. This is something you can’t find in Poland. " - Grzegorz Zembrowski, Polish National Radio - ch.3

"It is not pop but it is not rock either. It is…Underground Fly"

Underground Fly is a Polish band which recently released their second album. The first CD “Your Move, Your Choice” was a success both in Poland and abroad (Western Europe). As an answer to this success they produced a second album: “Awakenings”.
“Awakanings is difficult if not impossibly to identify with one style or specific influence. The tracks cover the wide range from calm and relaxing like “Clumsy Jester” (from the first minute of this song I was already sold), “Dance with me” and “Strange Sunrises”, songs with a story like “Little Fly” and tracks with more fire as “The Fools Truth” with its ironic lyrics about courageous soldiers in which the singer lets us hear a different side of his voice. The lyrics are sometimes almost poetic and often tell the story about life and all the good and bad things it brings. It is not pop but it is not rock either. It is…Underground Fly. This seems to be the best description. Vaguely I heard the influence of The Doors but it can’t really be pin pointed to a specific song. Also from time to time it brings to mind well known Britpop bands and their amazing success like The Kooks and The Hives.
This album doesn’t cease to surprise and will not become boring. Especially the last track is unexpected. The title “Robo” already lifts the veil a bit. A funny song in which all kinds of sounds and effects are being used to keep the listener amused right to the end. - Rockportaal.nl

THE STORY

+++
Underground Fly came into being in Poznan, Poland 2002, but they started playing together much earlier. The band was formed based on a strong friendship; Maverick (vocals) and Boss (bass) have known each other since birth and then, in high school they met Ratusz (drums) and Seemoon (guitar). The band formed very naturally, they never did any band castings or auditions. Everything has always revolved around these four people and from the beginning it was clear that in order for the band to function effectively it required the commitment of all members with clearly defined targets. Therefore, the “day jobs” were withheld and limited because of the music. Three albums have been released with the support of a small independent British label "Captive Recordings”. Captive's Tony Hoult had a major contribution to the development of the music, he spent a lot of time in rehearsals and ground the band to create a more refined sound, getting rid of unnecessary guitars and synthesizer parts and simplifying the rhythm section ..."let the music breathe" - that’s how "Fly Rock" began. Underground Fly made their stage début in 2006. Since then the band have played almost one hundred concerts in Poland and across Europe including a number of international festivals in Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Lithuania.

“Their guitar riffs are not lacking power whilst played with amazing taste, which would not shame The Edge from U2, for example. They softly place electronic sound patches, sometimes creating an intriguing atmosphere which is a perfect backdrop for a quiet, melancholic vocal line. Who plays so?
