KATHMANDU: They got together as a band in 2011, but it was only in March this year that they truly bonded together as the band ‘Underside’ during their ‘End of the World’ tour which began with a few gigs in Nepal and ended in the mountains of Switzerland. Performing in six gigs like Himalayan Vs Alps Tour, Himalayan Night, Heimothone Metal 10th Edition and in venues like Silver Clubs, Les Docks and Usine — where bands like Nirvana and Radiohead once performed, Underside showed what Nepali metal music is all about.

Blasting the Swiss stages with the sound of more than 100 decibels, Underside’s Avishek KC on vocal, Bikash Tamang on guitar, Bkrant Shrestha on guitar, Manil Shakya on bass and Bibek Tamang on drums, coloured Europe with the hues

of Nepal’s metal notes.

And Shakya even got a bass guitar as a gift, Bibek got to play the drums used by the renowned Swedish band Meshuggah while Bikash broke his ribs and KC got his face swollen — and that was a part of their tour apart from the music.

“It was a real tour, how a metal tour should be. It was intense and innovative,” expressed KC, who added there were Nepalis in the audience in his first international concert and it was “like performing in Nepal”.

And along with the fun, there was bonding, learning, gaining and sharing.

“As a band we felt whole and more of a family. The tour was educative as we came to know each other better and not just about gigs,” Shrestha shared and KC considers it a “big achievement”.

The tour was an exhilarating experience for Bikash and Bibek. “Playing the drums that Meshuggah had used was life’s shocking fun,” said Bibek, while Bikash termed the tour as “hardcore experience”.

In Switzerland, travelling to various venues, Underside shared the stage with bands like Voice Of Ruin, Call For Blood, Commando Noise Terror, Helmet, Derrick, among others.

The band, however, was amazed by the crowd.

KC termed them as “different” citing, “They were passive. The crowd was studying the music that each band played as they listened. But after the concert, they commented on how a band played.”

He divulged that the sound limit in Switzerland is 93 decibels and in one of the venues, they had to play within the limit. This made the band realise how loud their music is.

The best thing that happened to the band during the tour was that they realised Underside can grow as a band.

Another essential element that Bikash pointed out was, “There is no interaction among performing bands in Nepal. Nonetheless there were interactions during dinner time, after parties and sound check amongst the bands there. It was a new thing for me.”
