Most bands don’t make it more than a few months without a show on the calendar. Understory Project did. In the summer of 2006 their lead singer, Evan Foster was diagnosed with lymphoma. The Chicago based band was forced to wait it out as Evan was forced to undergo chemotherapy. He survived, and so did the band.
Evan, shown above has the ability to draw the audience’s attention to the song. After listening to four or five of the band’s songs it’s evident that his vocal talents might not have a limit. You can hear the strong DMB influences on Drive in Movie Theatre, at times so strong you’d think they were brothers, and that’s just the beginning of the story of talent for these guys. The rest of the band consists of Dave Rozkuska on guitar, Matt Hochwalt on bass, and Jesse Skolmoski on drums.
Of the songs I personally had a chance to listen to, Ride It stood out the most. The production quality of this song was very good. Imagine Foghat and Whitesnake jamming together but in modern times with modern equipment and you’ll have a decent idea of how the song sounds.
Another Understory Project original is Toy. Toy is a well thought out song that the band kind of says, hey, if you’re listening, you’re not just listening, you’re gonna go with us. This song features many modern effects, yet blends them smoothly with short bursts of clean acoustic guitar.
Intriguing to me is a song called Carousels. While the recording isn’t quite as good as some of their other songs, there’s some serious musicianship going on. Jesse Skolmoski at times plays ruffs (technical term) as if he grew up listening to jazz. He furthers his display with Treat You Well, playing cadences that make you want to see his union card.
Of the songs I had a chance to preview, Earth From Above seems like the most likely for a national release. This song in particular demonstrates where Evan is most comfortable, however Storm in Front of Me has all the qualities necessary to be a fan favorite.
All said Understory Project definitely stands out in Chicago as a band to watch. - Denis Butcher, "Indie IN-TUNE"

Bio

Hailing from Chicago, Understory Project offers a new unique sound to the music scene. It only seems logical to assume that in early 2002, when next door neighbors Evan Foster, Dave Rozkuszka, and Jesse Skolmoski formed Zone 145 (the bands previous name), music was something they fell in love with. (Bassist Ryan Carey joined the band one year later in 2003). Fast- forwarding to 2007 the band has taken their love for music and has grown to form their original sound. With influences ranging from Incubus, Muse, to Dave Matthews Band and Radiohead, Understory Project has managed to take these influences and use them to create a hard-hitting, unique, and compelling sound followed by a captivating live show. Hitting venues such as the Double Door, The Note, Stage 83, and many other local venues has allowed Understory Project to continue to evolve and grow as a band.
The summer of 2006 was an interesting summer for Understory Project. Our lead singer, Evan, was diagnosed with lymphoma and we had to stop playing music until he was finished with chemotherapy, for once music became a second priority in our lives. Evan is in remission and now it is our time to hit the scene.
The dedication to Understory Project is an integral part of each of the members lives; it is something they want to do as a career, and will pursue as a life long dream.
