"The Big Band Sound is Alive and Well"

They say the Big Band Era is long gone, but that's because they haven't heard the latest CD from the Unforgettable Big Band, directed by Thomas McLaughlin and headquartered in York, Pennsylvania. Their CD, entitled American Feeling, digs deep into the big band playbook -- with one notable exception. The title track, written by Ilio Volante, an Italian classical music composer, was unfamiliar to me. Yet it managed to take on a jazzy feel that made it seem right at home in the company of standards like Blue Moon and Begin the Beguine.

The band's musicianship was most evident in the ensemble parts, with saxes, trombones and
trumpets consistently playing in unison as though they were a single voice. Solo work was, well, spotty. Some were well conceived, but on occasion, sidemen gave the impression that they weren't at all sure what notes they'd play next. There were occasional problems with intonation.

Vocal chores were very ably handled by James Scofield and Tonia Grubb. Both seemed equally at home with ballads and uptempo tunes. Either would have been right at home during the 1940s, singing along with the Dorsey or Goodman band.

All in all, American Feeling is an admirable piece of work. The CD offers a good mix of ballads and instrumentals. A minor criticism: I wish that the Goodman-Lee classic, Why don't you do right?, had been taken at a faster tempo. The slow pace meant that it lost some of the effect of the light-hearted lyrics. That's a small point, though. Overall, the CD was a winner. - David Miller, Host: "Swingin' Down The Lane" - National Public Radio
