Exactly the sort of rockin', pop-cultre-referencin', ironic trip down distorted wah-pedal guitar lane that I like. It's somewhere between Regurgitator, Frenzal Rhomb, and the Chili Peppers, in a way that can't be anything but good. I've already seen Unicron's Revenge posters around, and I wouldn't be surprised to see more in the future. Watch this space.

I was driving through Anchorage listening to Diffusion Science Radio on a local educational talk radio station when I heard a song that just blew me away.
The song's called "Pi-Man!" by the Australian indie rock band Unicron's Revenge. You can listen to or download the full song on the band's website or listen to it right now!
If a song dedicated to the power to pi isn't enough to get your geek juices flowing, the fact that the band is called "Unicron's Revenge" should. As any true Transformers fan would know, Unicron was the evil planet-eating antagonist from the 1986 Transformers: The Movie. Unicron was famously portrayed by Orson Welles in his final film role.
An inspection of the band's myspace page reveals that their top two influences include Transformers and Danger Mouse, which are also two major influences from my youth. Oh crumbs!
I'm going to have to add Unicron's Revenge to my playlist along with one of my other favorite albums: the Transformers soundtrack. This band deserves a spot in anyone's punk/indie music with a flavor of math/transformers/secret agent mouse collection. If you ask me, they belong on the soundtrack to the next Transformers movie.

Struggling in a part of city where sometimes it feels like live music is dead; Unicrons Revenge began playing in garages, under the cover of darkness. Since forming in 2007, the four piece funk rock band from Bankstown, Sydney, have played every free gig available, slowly working their way to headlining crowd packed gigs at the renowned live venues of Candys Apartment and the Gaelic Club.
Recently recording their debut EP, 'The Transforming', the band pushes their funky rock in the vein of Janes Addiction and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with throwbacks to Frank Zappa and Led Zeppelin. Combine all of this with the self-reflexive, pun-based intertextuality within the lyrics of each song, and you have a kickass rock band that dont take themselves too seriously, and dont presume their audiences to be idiots.
With a live show that resembles Ian Curtis watching a laser light show while standing in front of a three-piece lava lamp filled with hair, Unicrons Revenge is a band on a planet of their own, representing a universe of hard working local Sydney rockers.
