Union X Junktion7 Nottingham 21/11/08

It's a cold Friday night in November and the Nottingham faithful are huddled in Junktion 7 where downstairs Mr. Jaimz Riot is playing a Trashstock DJ set. Upstairs however it's time for some live rock music and after we've been warmed up by a couple of local bands, Pickups and Pitchforks and The Beast and the Priest, Yorkshires very own Disarm blast through a turbo charged set of trashy rock numbers giving their usual energetic performance.

Follow that as they say and tonight that job goes to local Nottingham boys Union X who have the headlining slot this evening. This five piece band play a mainly original set of numbers that fall somewhere between hard rock, punk and metal and having seen these guys a couple of times before I know they always give it plenty on stage. Front man Nikk Sikk who I've known for a number of years now always seems nervous to the point of nausea before he gets up on stage, when on stage however he's in his element. A few years back Nikk was prone to leaping up on stage from the audience at Teenage Casket Co. gigs and joining in some glam cover (a Poison song I think) well he's changed a bit from those days and his vocal style now is more hard edged and grungy. Although Union X have only been going just over a year all the members of the band have been knocking around the local music scene for ages and have collectively a massive amount of experience. Joining Nikk Sikk in the ranks of Union X is Gray (guitar) Tony (guitar) Ian (bass) and Wayne (drums) and when on stage that experience shows through in their performance. Although the crowd at Junktion7 tonight is not a big one it's an enthusiastic one as Union X rattle through their songs a pace, Dr. Paranoia, Teenage Nazi Girl (Hell yeah!) Futures Vine and the eponymous song Union X are the pick of the crop for me. All too soon the show draws to its finale and the last original song of the set the sing along Stars in Stereo (Not! mono GD) and with said enthusiastic crowd baying for more we are treated to an encore of two covers. Guns & Roses Used to Love her and a rip roaring version of the Ramones' Pet Cemetery which as you might expect is greeted by manic dancing and jumping around from the well entertained audience. I'm hoping to get to see Union X again before the end of the year at the Sitwell in Derby (December 13th) I would advise anyone who like their bands gritty and hard edged to go and see em' there and have blast! … GD. - GD's Trash blog

Bio

Union X are five-piece band from Nottingham U.K formed in the summer of 2007. Their music is powerful, high energy and thought provoking. Resulting in a sound perfectly suited to the 21st century.
Nick - Lead vocals Hard edge vocals combined with a enegetic stage presence, was he born or genetically engineered to be a frontman - you decide.
Tony - Lead/Rhythm guitar A clever and imaginative lead guitarist really gives UNION X a fourth dimension.
GJ - Rhythm/Lead guitar Supplies the power to complement Tonys melodic lead playing. Guitar slung low and loud. Nuff said!!!
Ian- Bass/Backing vocals Non-compromising, driving rhythms and energetic on stage performance. This is one bassist who will not stand at the back and hide!!!
Wayne- Drums/percussion Solidity and power combined with finesse and creativity. The iron backbone behind Union X's sound.
